Check in at the truck before you head into the woods. If you're not back by your time, your family and lease buddies get a text with your last position.
Headed Back is a check-in for hunters, hikers, anglers, campers and anyone heading out alone. Before you go, say which stand or trail and when you'll be back. If you're not back by then, the people you chose get a text with your last position and what to do.
HOW IT WORKS
- Add family and lease buddies once. Each gets a view-only link to see where you are while you're checked in, with no app or login.
- Check in at the truck. Your phone records where you are, even with no bars, and sends it when it finds signal.
- Running long, tracking a deer or dragging one out? Add an hour, or tell everyone you're OK in one tap.
- Not out 15 minutes after your time? Our server texts your people your last position. The text comes from the server, so it still goes out if your phone dies, as long as your check-in reached it first.
IN THE WOODS
- "Still OK?" checks for sitting alone in a stand: miss one and your people hear within 30 minutes.
- Way back to the truck: distance and an arrow, using GPS and the compass only.
- Who's out: a party board for a camp or lease, so everyone can see who's in the woods and where.
- Stands for today's wind: tag the winds each stand works on, and the best ones come up first.
- USGS topo and satellite maps, weather radar, National Weather Service forecasts and warnings, daylight left.
- Plan from home: no signal at the gate? Save your plan while you have a bar.
- Road trips: RV and van stops with arrive-by times.
- A log of every check-in, with the map of where you went, miles walked, time moving and stopped, and your notes. Hours in a stand don't count as miles.
WHEN YOU'RE STOPPED
An optional Play tab, kept apart from the check-in. Missions (one a day is always a safety habit), a daily puzzle, trails told across real places, quotes, songs and riddles people leave for the next person, and made-up critters at parks and gas stations. Two of you? Play a trail on two phones: one gets the notes, the other gets the lock, and you have to talk. Nothing there works while you're driving.
GOOD TO KNOW
- Headed Back never contacts 911 on its own. It texts the people you chose and tells them what to do.
- It depends on your phone's battery, GPS and signal. Wear a full-body harness in a tree stand and tell someone your plan.
- Your location is shared only while you're checked in, only with the people you pick.
- Free to use. Delete your account and everything in it from Settings at any time.
