Best workout tracking app I’ve tried

This is by far my favorite workout tracking app, and I’ve tried quite a few over the past year including the popular Strong app. You can tell that the creators of this app actually work out themselves because they know how important it is to be able to label drop sets, failure sets, supersets, etc, which you can do very easily within the app. It allows me to track everything I need, and when if it’s been a while since I did an exercise I can easily take a look at my history, view graphs of my strength progression over time, and so on.

I started out with the free version but have since upgraded to the Lifetime membership because I needed to create more than 5 custom exercises since I do quite a few unusual calisthenics things, but most gym-goers can probably stick with the free version and have everything they need.

The social feature - being able to follow other members - is also nice. That said, I wish there was a way to upload short video clips of workout sets so that there would be some somewhat verifiable proof of what people are lifting, rather than just having to blindly accept the weight people enter into the app as being true. But, this isn’t that important. The important thing for me is that this app allows me to easily track every aspect of my workout so that I can see my progression and know where I’m at.

Kept Me Accountable

I have been using this app since January. I saw people on Reddit saying it was good and they had a promotion for like half off a year subscription. So I took the plunge. I love it. It’s the thing that had kept me in the gym this year because it helps me see results. I love how it syncs with my watch and I can input the weight and reps on my watch or phone. I appreciate that it supplies workouts for different splits so I don’t need to pay for a trainer. I love how it holds the last rep and weight from the previous time I did the exercise so I can work towards improving weight or reps. I love how it tracks my workouts and all the data it supplies. I am obsessed that it will track your rest time when you complete a set and play a tone to tell you rest is over. It will also play this tone over the music or as a buzz on your Apple Watch to do another set. (There are times it doesn’t work but mostly it does). It also provide nice visual tutorials of doing the exercise with some copy as well. I do wish it walked me though how to measure myself better but that’s a VERY small negative to truly nothing but positives I have. I also don’t use the social piece too much but I have taken some other people’s workouts just to switch it up every once and a while. I will be renewing next year 100%

Almost perfect by missing a major one

I have been jumping around using different apps for the last 5 years since I started doing workouts in my late 40’s. As a busy business professional with a family, my goal is to keep myself healthy and hope to live a longer quality life. Hevy has a great simple UI and available at various Apple devices including Apple Watch complications. It is better than other alternatives and definitely a plus. Yet it is not that far ahead. I expect others could easily catch up or even run ahead.
As many fitness YouTubers started to emphasize, the key in fitness is about reducing frictions to actually do the workouts. Since I don’t have any impressive figures or stats, the social sharing features are more or less a blah and sometimes a distraction to spending time on workouts or other better things in life. I could see how some people would really enjoy that.
So it hasn’t drawn me enough to upgrade to Pro. I found myself usually pay for apps that are lean toward helping me to get the main things done faster, easier and more consistent. What would take me across the line is having Apple shortcuts and api integration. So I could automate with Things3, Streaks, Apple HomeKit, and NFC tags and increase my chances of actually do the workout and use the app.
I’m looking forward to become a paid customer when these integration becomes available.

the primary gym buddy + bonus actual gym buddies

I thought I already wrote a review - and maybe I did - but figured I'd pop over here in case I haven't. I previously used Strong (which was convenient because you can transfer data from Strong to Hevy) but switched over to Hevy when a friend recommended it to me about two years ago. This app is so easy to use, and I Iove how I can track various metrics on here. The design is minimalist, sleek, and I never encounter any insufferable bugs (which is pretty rare for fitness apps!). I purchased the lifetime pro when I first downloaded it because I knew right away I'd be using it forever. By far, the best part of the app is the social feature - it's fun seeing what my friends are up to and maybe telling them to lift heavier, lol. The desktop browser is wicked sleek, too, and I like using it to build my routines as I find I'm faster on computer rather than phone. I recently started playing around with Hevy Coach to write programs for my friends (i.e. my "clients"), and so far I'm really enjoying it.

It's also been really fun to watch the app grow over the past couple of years. I'm still waiting for the "work out together" feature 😉 But overall - 5/5 stars. You literally will never need another fitness app ever again.

Easy to use, but could use quality of life

This is the best free app I have come across for working out. It offers a variety of options and you are able to create your own workouts. Its nice to be able to see what friends are doing as well as be able to take suggestions from their workouts. It does offer upgrades in app in case you want to track things such as measurements (chest, bicep, etc) or if you want to create full 8 week programs for yourself/others. BUT they are not necessary! You can visit other profiles in order to get new workouts or full programs. They also allow you to use a general search in order to find exercises easily. This is a GREAT feature as its easy to look up things I have never tried and also see a video on how to do that exercise.

The only criticism I have is their mileage mechanic. For walking/running/etc, you put in how many miles you went and how long it took you to go that far. I typically do not track this, as i am on a treadmill. I watch my speed and how long i am on that speed. Not only that but if i wanted to do timed sprints on like 11.7 mph, I now have to calculate of far i went after my timed sprint finished. I wish i could input my time and speed and/or distance.

Overall, extremely helpful and convenient. Only inconvenient when doing certain cardio exercises.

Really helpful illustrations/animations

I had a solid foundation in weightlifting as a teen but got away from practicing it as I got older. My focus with returning to weightlifting is on building functional strength to avoid injuries as I age, not body building or competition. Coming back to lifting as an adult with moderate gym anxiety, the Hevy app has helped me track progress on my weights and allowed me to make intelligent choices about increasing the amount I’m lifting over time. The feature I really appreciate are the illustrations and animations that help me confirm how I am supposed to do certain movements to make it look like I know what I’m doing even when I am trying new techniques for the first time or revisiting for the first time in many years. Having proper form helps reduce my anxiety that I will look silly at the gym. I also like the percentage summaries of the muscle groups that make up each work out so I can have a clear picture of which areas I tend to avoid and should be intentional about training. As a free app, I don’t think there’s a competitor that comes close to the features available without paying. Highly recommend for a health-focused novice-intermediate weight lifter.

Get it

Free version is great and completely functional, I paid for it and regret nothing. Its got about every exercise I can think of and I’d a great resource for the seasoned weight lifter or the new guy coming in. I’ve been out of the gym for about 12 years and just started going back and having a set plan of what I’m going to do keeps me focused and moving. If you’ve done an exercise previously it’ll show you how many you did so you can easily see improvement and help you remember what weights you used. It has a map of your body to quickly show you which muscles you’ve hit in a week and some positive stats to put perspective on how much you lifted. It also easily allows you to search for exercises by muscle groups for building routines, and you can easily set up a new routine if you’re too sore to do what you had planned.

The only con I’ve noticed so far is that it doesn’t seem to track calories burned during cardio and heavily favors weight lifting, and as someone trying to lose weight and build muscle it would be nice to track that expenditure more than time or distance. But, that could also be something I haven’t discovered in the app yet.

Excellent Workout Log and Tracker

This app has been exactly what I’m looking for. I have tried 5 different workout logging apps and none have them have fit the convenience and versatility that this app provides. Logging workouts is quick and easy especially if you add a routine, it will track your progress and let you know how much you lifted on your most recent attempt at that specific exercise. There is a huge library of exercises, more than I have seen from and other app. Many different variations wether your looking for dumbbells, barbells, machines, cables etc. If your big on tracking your progress, this app provides very easy to read graphs and stats and much more so you know where you stand day in and day out. The layout is smooth and not distracting, I personally enjoy black or dark colored backgrounds and layouts. The app has everything you need and nothing you don’t. Versatile with the ability to add friends and post, comment and “like” workouts, similar to social media but of course this is not necessary and you can simply use the app as a log, if that’s what you prefer. Very pleased with this app and would highly recommend.

Best tracking app for weightlifting/exercise

I searched for a while for an app that meets all of my needs in one place. It’s this. You can track every exercise you do, there is a library full of exercises to choose from. The library is awesome, each exercise has what muscle is being worked and how to execute the exercise. The tracking is awesome, when you go to the next week’s exercise, it will show you what you did last so you don’t lose track. Your notes for each exercise carry over too. It tracks your improvement over time, even the new goals you reach, and how much volume lifted for that day. You have a calendar to see what days and when you’ve exercised. There’s a small social media platform built into it to follow other people for inspiration or for them to follow you and make friends to cheer each other on. You can even log other types of exercises. You can track your weight and measurements to see your progress and post pictures as you evolve. Overall, it’s perfect. Don’t change a thing! Thanks to the creators of this for making such a user-friendly, comprehensive, and awesome app!

Best app for tracking workouts so far

When I started working out. I use to not log any of my workouts, then as I was getting frustrated with my progress one of my gym brethren told me I need to be logging all my workouts and trying to get better everyday. That’s when I found… the notes app. It was a grueling process and it became a jumble of numbers and abbreviations that only me and me alone could read. I knew I needed a change, that’s when I found… a bunch of useless apps that made me pay 25$ a month just to put in more than one workout routine. Then finally I found Hevy. After opening the app for the first time I knew I found a winner. I could have up to 3 routines which was perfect for the program I was running. Then I found out that it tracks my progress and my stats for me (which brought me more joy than my pump that day). It had rest timers, barbell calculations, as many reps and sets as you could want, super sets, drop sets, basically everything. The only reason it isn’t a 5 star is because I need to pay 80 dollars for the full version. It would be a 5 star for me if they even brought the price down to $35. Other than the paywall this has been an amazing app.
