What’s New

Version 2.7.6

– Fixes a bug in the new text composer where comments and bio updates were not correctly passed to the server.
– We’ve rebuilt the text composer view (used to write reviews and list notes) to hopefully eliminate some of the crashes we saw with iOS 13. The new composer saves your progress every ten seconds, allowing you to resume where you left off, in the event you still strike a crash. Let us know how it goes for you. (And yes, we’re aware of the extra tap that’s now required to show the keyboard — it’s unavoidable with the current approach and platform rules, but we’ll try to improve this in a future release.)
– Miscellaneous improvements and bug fixes.

Editors’ Notes

The first thing we want to do after seeing a movie is talk about it, and Letterboxd is a great place to connect with fellow film buffs. With this slick, streamlined app, we can easily share lists and reviews—and comment on friends’ updates—from the couch or the movie-theater lobby. If you’re serious about cinema, you’ll feel right at home.

WHY ISNT THIS APP MORE POPULAR

I really love this app and I regularly try to get more people involved in this app. It has helped me personally keep track of movies that i have seen and movies I want to see. I have seen a book related social media gain a low level of traction but i don’t understand why a movie related social media hasn’t. Everyone likes (or at cares about some) movies and I would honestly love to be able to see what all of my friend’s favorite movies are or what they thought of recent movies they’ve seen. Desperately wish this was more popular. This being said i wish it was a bit more social media based. Clearly i care about what everyone is watching, and while i use it now as more of a personal journal, for it to gain wider success i believe it needs to act as more of a social media.

why so buggy?

don’t get me wrong, this is a great website and service but I’m getting increasingly frustrated by how many bugs there are that don’t seem to have been addressed in the year that I’ve been using this app. I’m using the newest iPhone and the latest update of the app and would expect it to be a relatively smooth experience, but I find that several different bugs make it frustrating or even impossible to use. like some other reviewers have noted, I get logged out (or rather, told that there’s an error and I need to log out) and then only with difficulty manage to log back in; often in tapping on a film or review or user profile, the orange bar appears saying “Error loading [film/ user/film relationship/review]—something has gone wrong. Please try again later.” sometimes it still loads but with information missing (like user reviews), sometimes it doesn’t load at all, sometimes I can manage to get it to load by going back a few pages and retracing my steps and trying again, and sometimes it even crashes the app (which has been happening a lot today and has prompted the writing of this review). my point is that the only consistency is this inconsistency and it makes using the app a frustrating experience (the three haptic buzzes that these errors come with only makes it more aggravating). not sure if it’s a server problem or something or if it’s a buggy app but I would appreciate it if these many problems are addressed in a future update.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for writing Michael. We’ve put some considerable effort into both reducing the number of crashing bugs in the app (several of which were related to the new iOS 13 release) and improving the stability of our servers, which were almost certainly the cause of you being signed out and data failing to load correctly. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s markedly improved on how it was a month ago. We’d love you to re-test and update your review if you feel things have improved to your satisfaction.
