Ukulele Tuner & Lessons: Kala 12+

Best!!!

My friends gave me a $300 USD ukelele for Christmas, and up until now I have never gotten down to learn and play it. I was just browsing around for ukelele apps and found this. I was kind of glad that I found this app, because my ukelele is the same brand, Kala. I opened it and found many songs to play along to, although some were part of the “full access“ package. Since I didnt know ANY chords or notes, I watched the videos teaching the fingering on different chords, and once I knew enough, I played all these different songs, and already on the first day I could play the song Lavenders Blue. I found myself playing on Kala for three straight hours. Yes, I am not exaggerating!!! THREE HOURS STRAIGHT!! I already knew I had to buy the full access, and I am still so happy I found it. I have improved soo much using this app, so thank you to whoever started this app! There are many other reveiews for this app, and most say its bad and give it 1 star. I strongly disagree because it gave me a head start on ukelele and aftr 3 weeks Im still using it, and I am not planning on quitting. There are no problems for this app, nothing to improve! Its amazing 💯

This is Very Effective for a Beginner

This is a very useful app for a beginner, even the free content. They have a selection of videos teaching a handful of basic chords and strumming patterns which are very efficiently and clearly produced. The free songs (as well as paid) include chord guides and strumming patterns for each chord used in the song with links back to the chord instruction videos for clarity.

This is more than sufficient as a starting resource for a beginner who is a motivated self-learner. I have tried learning mandolin and guitar in the past but struggled because I have very weak hands, but with this app I have already played a song on the ukulele and greatly enjoyed the learning process. It felt more like a game than a learning drill. I’ll work through more of the free songs and chords but I’m already considering paying for full content.

Great app! Produces results.

I have never played any instruments.

Bought an Ukulele on Saturday.

Downloaded several “free” apps only to immediately delete them all except Kala.

Unlike so many other apps, Kala gave me free tuning, free lessons, and a free (albeit limited) song list and limited previews of all songs in the library. With all this, I was off and running immediately. Using the app for a good hour, I learned 4 cords and several techniques before hitting the paywall.

At that point paying for more lessons and access to the song list was a no brainer!

I’ve been practicing for a couple of hours and replaying lessons daily.

Today (Tuesday) I was blown away to play the first chart song of my own choosing. “Give Me Your Eyes”.

I still have a long way to go. But this has been a great learning tool.

With all that said, there are a few things I’d love to see added to this app.

Sometimes it’s hard to see which fingers go where in the videos. A close up or still frame or something would help for more complicated cords.

I love being able to slow songs down for learning.

For some of the faster songs, the speed is still way too fast for a beginner even at 50% speed. A 25% option would be nice.

I would like to be able to see a complete chord sheet for a song without having to playing through it, so I could just preview and practice the transitions without strumming.

Lastly I look forward to more lessons and songs!
