Portable and practical point of care ultrasound

Heart for the mountains
I use the Butterfly each week when seeing patients. It has greatly improved my ability to diagnose and treat patients. The ability to use one probe for cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal, obstetric and vascular studies is extremely helpful.While it doesn’t have the clarity of much more expensive cart based ultrasound systems, I have found that it is sufficient in most situations to confirm or refute a diagnosis. It is portable and readily accessible. I carry it with me whenever I see patients.I also greatly value the ability to save and review studies with other colleagues who are using the Butterfly platform. I have used it to teach many doctors and to learn from many others. I am a pediatric cardiologist who works in a remote setting and I have come to rely on the Butterfly every week.

Imagine having a professional team waiting to help you while you are making a good use of world's first hand-held, single-probe whole-body ultrasound system, conveniently in your palm with your phone? I am from Myanmar where specialist doctors are so scarce and hospitals are so far from majority or barely functional. I received POCUS training while working at MSF in a hilly remote area, which purpose was to train rural doctors with basic POCUS skills to help mountain people who rarely use currency. The short training was backed by telemedicine and it made a great change for five doctors and their patients.Owning an ultrasound machine was merely a dream for poor doctors here... before Butterfly iq was born. This is actually not supposed to be using here in Myanmar but I believed it would help my clinical life and I ordered one with the help of a friend from US. Difficultly shipped to here and I downloaded the app using VPN app.Now I connect the black blue beauty with my new iPad mini5 and instantly, I am in love.Thank you, Butterfly Team! Wish you all be healthy, peaceful and Happy New Year!

I bought the butterfly iq in 2020, for $2300. Image quality was not great so I didn’t use it that often for clinical purposes , but it was nice to have whenever I needed it, or so I thought. However, after 5 years, Butterfly has decided to discontinue support for the older model completely!! I saw the trade-in option and thought great, but it turns out that I still have to pay an additional $2K even after trading it in?? It’s crazy to spend that much money ($2K + $200 yearly subscription for imaging features) and end up with a piece of junk every 5 years, at which time they will ask you for $2-4K all over again! The only thing I’m thankful for is that when I recommended Butterfly purchases for our department budget, they deferred it for next year due to more immediate needs-obviously I will no longer recommend this probe and I would have been so embarrassed to spend department money on expensive lemons. Just shocked at their sleazy business practices and how they treat early adopters.

Great probe, great system but plenty room for improvement

Overall, it’s a great product and a great self-worth, even though it has some room for improvement, particularly specially in larger devices, such as iPads, one example is while scanning, It would be great to have multiple screens or even two screens for comparison purposes also, it would be great during scanning, while using the tool of biplane imaging do you have both of the screens showing side-by-side instead of vertically stackThis would allow for the user to have a better perspective of the structures while performing procedures, and also it would allow to have more room to see deeper structures will being side by side. Also also, it would be nice to have a tool in order to customize your presets while maintaining specific GTC parameters or create new presets
