i wrote an automater script to mute my mic then went looking for a way to display volume level letting me me know if mic was on. I found this and ditched my script. This also activates instantly whereas running my script has a delay. I dont have volume levels like i was searching for but this is fine. i just need some sort of visual on/off state.

I use this for conference calls to mute my microphone with a keystroke. Sure all the virtual meeting software has a key combo to mute yourself, but where this comes in handy is when Google Meet or whatever meeting app is not active and I’m doing something else I can hit the key combo without flipping back to the meeting software window. I just upgraded to macOS Tahoe and got a warning that this is running via Rosetta, so hopefully in the next year or two the developer releases a version for Apple silicon as well. Many thanks for this free tool!

This works brilliantly and I will be sending a tip. The ONLY issue I have is that when your mic is active, the icon in the menu bar is grayed out -- which is a very common UI indication of something being deactivated. Further muddying things, when you mute the mic, the icon becomes solid white. I think the cleaner solution would be to make the "mic on" state solid white, and then the "mute" state either grayed out, crossed out, or maybe both. It should stick as closely to the MacOS speaker icon as possible.

This is a great little app that does what it says on the tin. I’m often in meetings via Slack Huddles and I love push-to-talk so that I don’t accidentally interrupt. I used to use an app called Shush, but it hasn’t been updated since 2014 and has no Apple Silicon support. The one thing it did that I miss is that it allowed a single-key hotkey. I used the globe key as push-to-talk or toggle button and it worked wonderfully.
