OpenIn: Browser & Link Picker
Right browser for every link
Only for Mac
$11.99
New in 4.5: OpenIn now speaks German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese. Pick the right browser and profile for every link.
OpenIn decides where every link, email address, and file opens on your Mac. Send work links to one browser and personal links to another, open a site straight in the right browser profile or a private window, or pick from a quick app picker every time.
HOW IT WORKS
Make OpenIn your default browser, mail app, and file opener. When you click a link or open a file, OpenIn opens the right app right away, or shows a small picker so you can choose, with the mouse or entirely from the keyboard.
RULES THAT DECIDE FOR YOU
• By domain or URL pattern: company sites in your work browser, everything else in your personal one
• By the app the link came from: links from chat or mail apps go where you want them
• By modifier keys: hold ⌘, ⌥, ⇧, or fn while clicking to pick a different app
• By Focus: switch browsers automatically when a Work or Personal Focus is on
• By origin: AirDrop, Handoff, the Share menu, or the OpenIn browser extension
BROWSER PROFILES AND PRIVATE WINDOWS
Open links in a specific profile of Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and other Chromium- and Firefox-based browsers, or in a private or incognito window.
MORE THAN WEB LINKS
• Email links: open mailto links in your mail app or in web mail such as Gmail or Fastmail
• Files: choose the app for each file type, or group several types together
• App links: route Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, VS Code, SSH, calendar subscription, and other app links
• Shortcuts actions, widgets, and a Safari extension, with Chrome and Firefox extensions available too
FOR POWER USERS
• Rewrite URLs with JavaScript, for example to strip tracking parameters or turn mail links into web mail
• Run your own zsh scripts as targets
• Expand shortened links before deciding where they open
• A searchable history of everything you opened, with the rule that decided it
PRIVACY
OpenIn runs entirely on your Mac, and your history stays on it. Seeing the full link in the picker before it opens also helps you spot suspicious ones.
IN YOUR LANGUAGE
English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Ukrainian, Russian, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.

more I’ve tried several protocol handlers for macOS. Some of them are too cutesy and some have some powerful features, practically inaccessible through the clumsy UI.OpenIn offers enough complexity to achieve my goals, but is still extremely easy to use. I have a mature workflow for web application development, and particular requirements for opening links in specific web browsers. I haven't yet tried the custom rule script support, but I suppose I could use that if my needs weren't already met.I like how the app uses minimal resources and never crashes. It's just dependable and trustworthy.

OpenIn has quickly become one of the most critical apps in my productivity workflow. As a multi browser user, I can quickly determine where to direct clicked links and build automated workflows for directing URLs to certain apps. The developer of the app is super awesome and responsive when contacted. Following the patch that was released today, OpenIN now functions great on Sonoma 14.0 production and 14.1 B3. Thank you OpenIN team!!!

I use different browser profiles to keep my personal and work browsing separate. Until I found this, links were always going to the wrong profile. This app solved my biggest daily annoyance. I know you can customize it a lot, but I use it pretty much straight out of the box and it works perfectly every time.

The app works as expected. I click on a link and finally have to option to select what browser it opens in without worrying about system defaults. I recommend it for anyone using different browsers for different purposes.

Bug fix: the “New in OpenIn” window kept coming back — usually with the first link you opened after restarting your Mac — until OpenIn was quit from its menu. It now appears once after each update.
4.5.2 Sep 28
Bug fixes:
• History search now finds links when you type three or more words, and treats ? and * as ordinary characters
• When a script attached to a link or file type failed, OpenIn stopped without opening anything. It now shows the error and keeps routing your links
• Running a rule's script in the script editor now gives the script the rule's apps
• File rules with a stray space or line break around the pattern now match
• Links sent to a Safari profile window on another desktop now open in that window
• The app picker no longer waits up to an extra second when opening a link also launches OpenIn
4.5.1 Sep 25
OpenIn now speaks your language: German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Ukrainian, Russian, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. The translations were made with AI; if something reads wrong, use Report a problem… in Settings → About.
• Opening a downloaded file through OpenIn could fail with a macOS malware warning, even for harmless files. OpenIn now explains what happened and offers to remove the quarantine flag for files you trust (the App Store version needs OpenIn Helper for this)
• Failed app launches now show an error instead of failing silently
• Links opened from Terminal, scripts, or editors such as VS Code are attributed to the app they came from, so source-app rules apply
• OpenIn Helper now verifies the app talking to it
• Drive the app picker from the keyboard: Return or Space opens, arrows or Tab move the highlight
• The release notes and setup windows now open with keyboard focus
4.5.0 Sep 23
- **macOS 27**: Refreshing profiles now asks for your permission with a one-time **Grant Access** dialog instead of silently failing — and a failed refresh no longer erases the profile list you already had. Profiles you configured earlier keep working either way
- New: add a browser profile manually with the **+** button in the profile editor — the escape hatch when discovery is unavailable. Manually added profiles survive later refreshes
- Bug fix: with several Safari profiles configured, routing a link could open the wrong profile twice and end with "Failed to open a profile window". Profile windows are now located by name in Safari's File menu, so routing works regardless of profile order, count, or menu layout — existing setups are fixed automatically, no reconfiguration needed
- New scheme: `magnet` — route magnet links (e.g. to Transmission) with the full rule engine. Settings → Schemes → Add scheme… → Other → Magnet Links
- [MAS] OpenIn Helper upgrade is required.
4.4.4 Sep 10
- Bug fix: file types inside a file group could not be selected, so **Remove selected** stayed disabled and the right-click menu had nothing to act on. Adding file types was never affected
- Bug fix: the last paragraph of the welcome tutorial's final step was cut off, hiding the support links
- Fixed a typo on the welcome tutorial's final step
4.4.3 Aug 27
- Bug fix: file handlers are now identified by the extension you type rather than by the file type macOS resolves it to. Adding `.md` could produce a handler labelled `.txt` (with the wrong icon), and Markdown files could then be routed by the `.txt` handler, because some Macs map both extensions to the same underlying file type. Extensions that share a type — such as `.md` and `.txt`, or `.yml` and `.yaml` — can now have separate handlers, apps, and rules. Existing handlers are unchanged; add a handler for the extension you want if two were previously merged.
- Bug fix: file groups are identified by extension too, so a group containing a plain-text type no longer claims Markdown files, and group members show the extension you added rather than the canonical one. Groups created before 4.4.2 keep every extension their file types declare — a group with a JPEG entry still claims `.jpg` and `.jpe` alongside `.jpeg`
- The per-handler **Enabled** switch is now labelled **Warn when OpenIn is not the default**, which is all it ever controlled — it never stopped OpenIn from routing that type
- Bug fix: dotfiles (`.gitignore`, `.zshrc`, `.env`) reach the dotfile handler again. Since 4.4.0 macOS reported them as generic data files, so they were routed by a separate handler instead of the one you configured
- Bug fix: **Set as default** had no effect for extensions macOS does not recognise (such as `.conf` or `.env`), and those handlers always showed the "not default" warning
- Bug fix: selected apps were cleared when a rule's launch mode was switched back to **Selected** or **Selected (running)**
- Bug fix: crash in the script and regex editors when the text contained emoji or other non-ASCII characters
- Bug fix: in the app selection dialog, a number shortcut could collide with a custom key assigned to another app — the position number is now hidden when that happens
- Bug fix: URL-rewriting scripts no longer fail when the JavaScript engine writes a harmless warning; success is now decided by the script's exit status
- Bug fix: unusual URLs no longer crash the script helper, and a script task with nothing to do now reports a real error instead of an empty result
- Bug fix: history entries could be silently dropped when another OpenIn process (Helper, widget, Browser Launcher) wrote to the shared database at the same time
- Bug fix: **Open again** in History now explains why a file can't be reopened instead of doing nothing
- Bug fix: the History widget could crash or show stale rows because it read the database off the wrong thread
- Bug fix: domain rules with a port now recognise the default ports for `rdp` and `vnc`
- Bug fix: `openin://` links written with mixed capitalisation (`OpenIn://`) are now recognised
- Bug fix: OpenIn no longer rewrites a database created by a newer version of the app down to an older schema
- Bug fix: on macOS 27, **Edit…** for an application opened an empty sheet — the form was drawn before the application's settings finished loading
4.4.2 Aug 19
- Added profile support for **Brave Origin** (release, beta, and nightly channels)
- Added profile support for Brave Beta, Brave Dev, and Brave Nightly
- Bug fix: App selection dialog could appear in the wrong position if the cursor moved while the dialog was being prepared
- Bug fix: the background default-app check could drain the battery of a sleeping laptop — it now runs only when macOS considers it a good time
4.4.1 Aug 4
New: Route more URL schemes
• The new Schemes tab brings Mail, Call, and other scheme handlers together. Existing settings migrate automatically.
• Add searchable handlers for editors and IDEs; remote and terminal tools; Git clients; communication apps; calendars; authentication apps; and more.
• Every handler supports OpenIn’s rule engine, including source app, key modifiers, Focus, and custom JavaScript rewriting.
New: Make OpenIn your default terminal
• OpenIn can now be the default app for Unix executables and executable scripts, routing them to your chosen terminal.
• Easily add Unix executable and Folder handlers from Settings → Files → Add file type… → Common types.
• Extensionless files now use their actual content type, and file types without an extension display a localized name.
New: On-device phishing detection
• With phishing prevention enabled, Apple Intelligence checks links in the background without delaying them. Suspicious links trigger a notification explaining why, with actions to trust the domain or view History.
• Trusted domains skip detection. Checks are prewarmed, deduplicated, and time out after five seconds.
• Advanced users can customize the detection prompt or restore the default under Settings → Browsers → Phishing prevention.
• Requires macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence enabled.
Improved History
• Compact rows now show the time, URL, target app, and any phishing warning.
• The new Details inspector explains the complete routing decision, including the original URL, source app, modifiers, origin, Focus, matched rule, selected app, and phishing verdict.
• Trusted domains can be added directly from flagged entries.
More browser profiles
• Added profile support for Zen Browser and Helium Browser.
• Profile discovery now supports Firefox forks that use profiles.ini.
Bug fixes and improvements
• Fixed a crash when opening multiple URLs simultaneously.
• Improved the app-selection dialog, Safari Profiles, macOS Focus handling, and URL-shortener resolution.
• Domain rules now accept patterns containing :// within the path.

4.3.1 09/24/2025
OpenIn 4.3.0
*Minimum requirement is now macOS 15.1.*
***Redesigned interface and new app icons***
- Significant design changes make the app easier to use and more intuitive for new users, including tips showing where to find key information.
***Improved support for Browser Profiles***
- Safari Profiles now work for all locales, not just English.
- Automatic discovery for Safari, Chromium, and Firefox profiles. No need to type anything—just press refresh, set the profile, and you’re done.
- Firefox profiles are now fully supported. The latest version of Firefox finally fixed how profiles can be launched from the command line—no more issues.
- Support for Edge in Private mode.
- Added support for many other Chromium-based browsers.
***Browser Extensions***
- The Safari Web Extension is bundled. Chrome and Firefox extensions can be downloaded from the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons. You can easily enable the Safari Web Extension in Safari Preferences.
- Browser extensions now include settings to rewrite all links so they are sent to OpenIn. For example, if you try to open `https://myworksite.com` in your Personal Browser/Profile, it will be redirected to OpenIn, where you can set a rule to always open this domain in your Work Browser/Profile. This can also be customized with key modifiers.
- You can quickly send the current tab to OpenIn using the toolbar icon, or send a specific link via the context menu option "Open in OpenIn".
***Customizations***
- Custom icons for apps. You can change the look of selected apps by setting a custom icon or generating one with Image Playground.
- Custom key bindings for the app selection dialog. Instead of the default 1, 2, 3, you can set your own keys, like z, x, c.
- OpenIn supports the `openin:` scheme. For example: `openin:open?url=YOUR_URL`
- Rewritten domain/file matching with support for query parameters, fragments, ports, case-insensitivity, and glob patterns like `**/*`. Matching should now be more reliable and work as expected.
- Support for the `message:` scheme in Mail apps. If you are using our FastMail/Gmail examples, make sure to override them with the latest ones.
- New Shortcuts actions for opening a specific browser, or a specific browser/profile with a URL.
***For Developers***
- Ability to add zsh scripts as target apps. This opens many possibilities: you can launch Chromium profiles your own way, publish links to special destinations, or even invoke Shortcuts. Environment variables (e.g., `OPENIN_KEY_MODIFIERS_COMMAND=1`) let you know how the link was sent to OpenIn. Documentation will be published soon.
- Added support for pre-rule handler scripts. These can process URLs before rules are applied, for example to strip tracking query parameters. This avoids duplicating that logic in every rule. An example script is included—just click Edit and use it.
***Other features***
- Added `Fn` key as a rule condition, in addition to Cmd, Shift, and Control.
- Added a rule condition for links invoked from browser extensions.
- Support for wildcards (`*`) in shortened URLs, such as `*.sendgrid.com`.
