New in 6.2: income tax for freelancers optional, with the flat rates under § 17 EStG. Plus 43 wage-type templates, a benefit-in-kind calculator and tax year 2027.
How much of your salary is left – and what does an employment really cost? BruttoNetto works it out in seconds, under Austrian law and with every detail of Austrian payroll.
WHAT MAKES THIS APP DIFFERENT
• Calculate backwards: enter the net pay you want, the app finds the gross figure – to the cent, and where several fit, the lowest.
• Employer's view: personnel costs, payroll charges, overheads and hourly rate at a glance.
• Month by month: special payments, recalculations and changes in the middle of a year are taken into account.
• Keep as many calculations side by side as you like – compare instead of retyping.
NEW IN VERSION 6.2 – FOR FREELANCERS
• Income tax optional: payroll for freelancers withholds no tax – income tax can be switched off, and the app then shows the net before tax.
• Flat rates under § 17 EStG instead of the fixed 12 %: small or large basic lump sum (15 % from 2026) under § 17 (1), or the small business flat rate under § 17 (3a) (45 % or 20 %), each with the year's maximum amount and turnover limit.
• For freelancers the commuting allowance (home to workplace) counts as an expense reimbursement, no longer as income.
• The detailed results name the chosen flat rate and the deducted amount.
SINCE VERSION 6.1
• Overtime at 100 % stays tax-free up to half the base pay under § 68 (2) once the § 68 (1) allowance is used up.
• Much faster calculation – result, chart, salary table and net → gross.
• Net → gross always finds the lowest gross pay at the marginal earnings threshold and the steps of unemployment insurance.
• VoiceOver reads out inputs, the salary slider, every result row with its column names and the chart with amounts in euros; result table and chart adapt to the screen, the sidebar and large text.
• If a calculation fails, the app says so.
SINCE VERSION 6.0
• Additional pay as a list: bonuses, commissions, allowances, tax-free benefits, benefits in kind and reimbursements from 43 templates – each with a practical example and the limit of the selected year.
• Custom wage types with your own treatment in tax and social insurance.
• Benefit-in-kind calculator for company car, company flat, employer loan, parking space and full board and lodging – with the calculation shown step by step.
• Holiday bonus and Christmas bonus can be switched individually and set freely.
• Apprentices, deferred pension, active pension and activity allowance.
• Tax year 2027 (provisional) with the Family Bonus Plus split 75 : 25.
• Default settings: set your business values once and use them in every calculation.

NEW – FOR FREELANCERS
• Income tax optional: payroll for freelancers withholds no tax. Income tax can now be switched off in the settings for freelancers; the app then shows the net before tax.
• Flat rates under § 17 EStG: instead of the fixed 12 %, choose the small basic lump sum (6 %) or the large one (12 % until 2024, 13.5 % in 2025, 15 % from 2026) under § 17 (1), or the small business flat rate under § 17 (3a) (45 %, 20 % for service businesses, from 2020), each with the year's maximum amounts. The lump sum is calculated from operating income; social insurance remains deductible in addition. New calculations start without a lump sum, existing ones keep the large basic lump sum.
• Turnover limits: if operating income exceeds the limit of the chosen flat rate (small business from 2025 including the 10 % tolerance), no lump sum is applied; the settings say so in the footer.
• The detailed results name the chosen variant and show the deducted lump sum.
CHANGED
• For freelancers the commuting allowance (home to workplace) is an expense reimbursement like those under § 26: not taxable and outside the base of the lump sum, because travel costs of the same amount are a business expense. Previously it counted as income. For employees and workers it remains liable to wage tax as before.
BUG FIXES
• iPhone Duo: on the outer display the calculation's header slipped under the navigation bar.
• Detailed results: labels with a sign (“- Social insurance:”) no longer wrap awkwardly, and a stray dot above the result table is gone.
