rakkup allows you to access an entire bookshelf of climbing and backcountry skiing guidebooks on your iPhone, even beyond the reach of cell phone coverage. Once downloaded, guidebooks work offline with no Internet connection! It is also the first and only mobile climbing app that navigates you through the trail system to your climb, turn by turn. Produced in partnership with Outdoor Research, rakkup reinvents the guidebook for the smartphone era.
We've partnered with Wolverine Publishing and other publishers to bring you rich guidebooks complete with color photos and topo drawings. Free sample climbs and ski descents are included.
Browse climbs and descents on a map or in the list format of your choice, filter and search in seconds, then navigate using your phone's GPS with a single tap. In climbing guidebooks, the app continuously calculates the easiest route through the trail system from your current location. Simply follow the arrow and moving map.
Note: When actively navigating to a climb, rakkup uses GPS in background. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
Version 29 features all-new navigation features for your backcountry snow adventures! Track your tour on a detailed topo map, see the elevation profile of your trip, and compare your time en route to an estimate based on the "Munter" method. Map tracking is improved for climbing guidebooks, too! Note that iOS version 11 is required for map tracking, and will soon be required for all rakkup users.
Version 29.1 includes important bug fixes for version 29.
Ratings and Reviews
Never get lost and stay up to date
The main feature that I like about this app is the gps navigation. It makes approaches so much easier and certain. How many times have I gone up the wrong trail, backtracked, and wasted time on the approach. Really nice to get to the climb faster and not be confused at a trail junctions.
Also the constant updates. Hardly ever is a printed guide fully up to date. This platform allows instant updates from developers and in seconds you have information on all the climbs.
This app is so incredibly helpful to the adventurer. The ability to see your location in relation to a guidebook map makes navigation stunningly easy. Now you can take your mind off the approach and focus on the objective!
The future of the climbing guidebook
Love the Rakkup guides! The GPS navigation as well as all the photos and topos for each climb as well as being able to filter and search for climbs by grade, type etc is awesome. Using this in areas that are not easy to get to is invaluable with the turn by turn directions. I’ve used the Ain Belmusk Rakkup guide for a small climbing area in Morocco which can be next to impossible to find the area without the help of the GPS as its in a very remote location.
The app itself is solid and there are frequent updates from the developers with new features and performance and stability improvements. The ability to get an update for the guidebook when it’s available and have it all on your phone which most people have with them all the time anyways is really convenient. It’s great to see more and more major climbing areas are being released. Hopefully this will mean a lot less time and energy wasted trying to find the climbs and more time actually climbing!
