觀音菩薩，梵文 Avalokite，又作觀世音菩薩、觀自在菩薩、光世音菩薩等，從字面解釋就是“觀察（世間民眾的）聲音”的菩薩，是四大菩薩之一。他相貌端莊慈祥，經常手持淨瓶楊柳，具有無量的智慧和神通，大慈大悲，普救人間疾苦。當人們遇到災難時，只要念其名號，便前往救度，所以稱觀世音。在佛教中，他是西方極樂世界教主阿彌陀佛座下的上首菩薩，同大勢至菩薩一起，是阿彌陀佛身邊的脅侍菩薩，並稱“西方三聖”。
