Si trattava di una fortezza “alla moderna”, adatta a fronteggiare le nuove strategie delle guerre cosiddette di movimento, la cui costruzione ebbe inizio nel 1552. L’edificazione della struttura di difesa fu richiesta dai genovesi all’imperatore Carlo V, impegnato con le sue truppe contro quelle del re francese Enrico II e finanziata con fondi imperiali e tassazioni straordinarie sulla popolazione del Marchesato di Ceva.
