I can't recall kanji... lets you speak, scan a photo, or type to display Japanese characters and words. Check meanings and stroke order, or use Japanese clues to find a word you can't quite remember.
- Speak, scan, or type
Use voice input, recognize text with the camera or from saved images, or enter text with the keyboard.
- See characters clearly
Adjust the text size with a slider. Enlarge complex kanji so you can check their shape as you write.
- Search from Japanese clues
Enter a Japanese clue about a character's shape or a word's meaning. For example, try “木へんに春” (the tree radical next to 春). Suggestions appear one at a time. Tap “Find another suggestion” to look for another.
- Check meanings and stroke order
Look up word meanings using the dictionary or a web search. Select individual characters to search the web for their stroke order.
- Use iPad as a handwriting reference
Display longer passages in large text, with vertical and horizontal writing layouts. Keep the text in view as you write a letter or practice handwriting.
- Check kanji on Apple Watch
Enter text by voice or keyboard on your wrist. Your Apple Watch also uses the color theme you choose on iPhone.
- Make it comfortable to read
Choose from nine color themes and revisit previous entries from your history.
Hint Search Requirements
Hint search is available on iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 26 or later, on devices that support Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence must be enabled, and its on-device model must be available with Japanese language support. Results are suggestions inferred from your clues.

Use the app up to three times a day for free. Watch a video ad to add more uses. Premium offers unlimited use without ads.
