FOLDER RACK – Manage your files and folders
The Finder was always my most-used tool. However, there were many functions that I missed in my day-to-day work or that I would have done differently. That’s how the idea for Folder Rack came about. Here are a few tips for your personal journey of discovery:
PRINCIPLE
– 1 panel per folder, any number of panels
– All panels are always visible (and are always zoomable)
OVERVIEW
– Any number of folders at a glance – in 1 window

– Focus on optimal keyboard support
SMART
– Click/double-click, Return can vary for folders / files
– More options with Shift / Control / Option / Command
FIND
– Wildcard search with * and ? in the panel and via Spotlight

– Bookmarks for important files and folders
– Enter tags directly in the cell

– Save / load different profiles with names
FLEXIBLE
– Table, tree and preview
– Text files can be edited and saved in the panel
SPECIAL

– Window always in the foreground if desired
TIME-SAVING
– No unnecessary view changes
– Smart columns for images, PDF, media, position, tags

– System-independent dark mode
COMFORTABLE
– Preview with selectable panel link
– Drag & drop into a new folder if desired
CUSTOMIZABLE
– Actions for return, mouse click, double click as you like
– Shortcuts, context menu, toolbar, statusbar: Customise to your liking
... and in the app you will discover much more! Take a look at “Tutorial as PDF” and “Current Shortcuts as PDF” under “Help”. You can fully test Folder Rack for 7 days. The license is available as an In-App Purchase – no subscription: buy once, save time and gain an overview for life!
more – Fixed a bug that prevented changing folders in a panel after switching the language or Light / Dark mode.
– The current folder name in the first column of a panel is now shown more prominently, making it easier to identify.
– Under “Help, Help in Right Sidebar”, you can now always find the updated version history. This keeps you up to date with the latest changes, even with frequent updates. And with the sidebar open, you can try out a few new or unkown things in the app straight away.

– Space bar on folders: Quick Look for folders is, let’s be honest, not all that exciting. And sometimes you may not want to open a folder just to keep the current view unchanged. Instead, pressing the Space bar can display a context menu showing the folder’s contents. Select a file to preview it with Quick Look. Hold the Option key while selecting a file to open it in a new panel. The same happens when you select a folder.
– Preview, text files: A button in the “Open With” section lets you encrypt a text file with a password. I often use plain text files to store sensitive project information that shouldn’t be readable by everyone. You can decrypt a file, edit it, and save it again—automatically re-encrypted—in one quick step. And, of course, you can permanently decrypt encrypted files too, provided you know the password.
– There’s another Easter egg hidden in the menu. It’s a small tribute, with great respect, to someone who managed to implement something like this in just 600 bytes of assembly code. Have fun finding it!

– Preview, Text files: corrected the colour scheme (including Dark Mode). The selected line of text now uses the same prominent highlight colour as a selected table or tree row—even when it loses focus.
– Path list in the toolbar: Hold Shift + Control to bookmark a folder instantly, so that it appears in the bookmarks list.
– Toolbar button “Help” or menu option “Help”, ‘Context Help in Right Panel’: Displays tips and keyboard shortcuts in a dedicated, resizable panel on the right-hand side. This is particularly useful when you’re just getting started.
– In addition to tips relating to the currently active panel, you can also display guidance for the various sample profiles in the “Panels” menu, as well as for Search and Preview. Keyboard enthusiasts can also display the complete list of keyboard shortcuts here—as an alternative to the PDF available under “Help”, “Current Shortcuts as PDF”.
– Wherever there’s a right-hand sidebar, a left-hand one can’t be far behind. Stay tuned to see what’s coming there soon...

HIDE MENUS:
– On small screens, the now rather numerous Folder Rack menu options occasionally obscure the little help icons on the right-hand side of the menu bar. The “Hide Menus” option in the “Folder Rack” menu briefly hides (or shows again) all Folder Rack menus except the first one, creating more space.
EASIER TIDYING UP:
– When Dispatch Mode is enabled, the panel number and keyboard shortcut are displayed prominently in the background of each target panel. This makes tidying up with lots of panels even easier and clearer, and of course makes it easier to recognise when Dispatch Mode is active.
IMAGE PREVIEW:
– Crop function for images (for the current image or all selected ones). A typical option that I’ve used myself: quickly cropping lots of bitmaps to the same size. There will certainly be further batch functions added in the future.
TEXT PREVIEW:
– Show/hide line numbers
– Switch zebra stripes on/off (white, grey, green). Better clarity and – with the green zebra stripes – a touch of nostalgia for those who still remember continuous paper.
– Show/hide invisible characters such as spaces, tabs and line breaks
– Line spacing adjustable in 5 steps from 0% to 50% (default: 20%)

TOOLBAR:
– For menu options, any existing toolbar button icon is displayed in the menu. The text remains left-aligned, making it easy to scan quickly. This highlights the more important options, and alongside the lines and lengths, the gaps provide further visual cues that make it easier to locate options.
– “View”, “Compact Toolbar”: Narrower buttons as an option. By shortening the titles to three letters, you can see more buttons at a glance.
– Toolbar button “Get” or, in the menu, “Go to”, “Get Folder from Panel...”: With many panels, this makes it easier to assign a path in the current panel: By clicking, you can simply adopt the path of another panel as the path of the current panel.
– “Settings”, “Toolbar”: Customise the order and visibility of toolbar buttons to suit your needs.
STATUS BAR:
– “Settings”, “Statusbar”: You can place your favourite toolbar buttons at the bottom right of the status bar, making access even easier and faster.
SEARCH:
– New search function including wildcard search with * and ?
– I was never really satisfied with the search results via the Spotlight API. Now drives are searched again and items are actually found.
WINDOWS:
– Even though in macOS 26 Tahoe you can drag windows across all edges (essentially “against the flow”), in Folder Rack simply hold down Shift + Command, click anywhere and drag the window.

– Displaying multiple panels across multiple racks is part of Folder Rack’s unique DNA. Nevertheless, it’s sometimes very handy to quickly maximise the current rack or panel (and just as quickly restore it to its original state). This is now possible with three new options in the “Panels” menu, three new toolbar buttons and easy-to-remember keyboard shortcuts. The other active panels can still be expanded via the dividers. Particularly handy for “tidy-up” profiles, and also for preview panels!
– Folder Rack now has an icon in the menu bar for quickly selecting folders or (using the Shift key) bookmarks.
– Bug in Spotlight search fixed. Return (normal search) and Command + Return (Spotlight) in the search field now work again with wildcard characters such as * or ?.
– In table and tree view, you can use Option + Home, End and = to scroll the current item to the first, last and middle row – handy if you want to quickly see what’s above or below it.
– This also works when text files can be displayed and edited in Preview view. There, the current line is now clearly highlighted with a coloured background.
– You can find these and all other keyboard shortcuts (especially for tables, trees and text) under “Help”, “Current Shortcuts as PDF”.

– At the specific request of a user, the status bar includes a battery indicator that also emits an audible alert when the battery level drops below 10%. This is for anyone who finds the standard, silent indicator in the menu bar insufficient, but considers a separate app for this purpose to be overkill. It can be hidden via the “View” menu.

– Preview: Pressing Command + I quickly opens a preview pane, which even allows you to edit and save plain text files directly within the pane – something I use often. You can also choose whether to use a monospaced or a proportional font, and whether lines should wrap at the edge of the panel or whether you can scroll horizontally.
– I’ve never been a fan of all standard keyboard shortcuts for navigation in the text, particularly Home and End, so I’ve changed them. Home jumps to the start of the line, End to the end of the line. Pressing Command + = always centres the current line. Using Option + Page Up and Option + Page Down lets you scroll whilst keeping the current line centred.
– You can find the new additional key bindings under “Help”, “Current keyboard shortcuts as PDF”. Please feel free to give feedback on whether you’d prefer to be able to choose the key shortcuts yourself. There’s surely a spare setting switch somewhere for that ...
1.27 Apr 17
– Resolved several issues relating to older versions of macOS. Folder Rack runs on macOS 13.5 Ventura and later. To use the “old” icon, see the first page in “Settings”.
1.26 Apr 13
– “Preview”: If the “Calculate size of folders” option in the “View” menu is not selected, a “Calculate size” button will initially appear for directories, so that there is no delay even with large directories.
– As always, various corrections and improvements.
1.25 Apr 11
– “Go To”: Display a path from the clipboard in the panel.
– “Panels”: New sample profile “3 x Preview”. Shows how to connect three panels, each with its own preview panel.
– “Preview”: Under “Link to Panel”, there is a new “All” button. This updates a preview panel from all other panels. Ideal when using multiple panels and only one preview panel.
1.24 Apr 10
– Preview: Shift+Command+I toggles the info rows on and off.
– Breadcrumbs can be shown or hidden for the current panel or for all panels. This is particularly useful when “tidying up” in Dispatch mode, when, for space reasons, you only want the breadcrumbs to be displayed in the first panel.
– The menu has been tidied up, with “Panels” added for options affecting multiple panels. This has made the “Panel” menu clearer. There’s also an Easter egg hidden in the menu – especially for those feeling nostalgic these days!
– “Panel” menu: Copy the path of another panel into the current panel using Shift+Command. Very handy if, for example, you have one large panel in one rack and several small ones in a second rack. You can then quickly “enlarge” a small one without completely changing the look.
– The current panel settings can be saved as a profile. Loaded and saved profiles are displayed in the first selection box when you click on them using Control+Command+G or Control+Click.
– Bookmarks and profiles can be saved and reloaded as JSON files in the selection box. This allows you to manually edit bookmarks and profiles in the JSON file.
– “Panels” menu: Three example profiles: “Standard”, “Ivo” (my favourite) and “Tidy up”. Try them out, change paths, columns and other settings in the panels as required, and ideally save them as a profile under “Panels”.
1.23 Apr 7
– JSON files are recognised as text and can therefore be edited and saved directly in a preview panel.
– Under “Go To”: Your current bookmarks can be saved to a JSON file (and reloaded). You can edit them, for example, using an external editor or in the preview. This is handy if you want to quickly modify or reorder your bookmarks.
– Under “Help”: “Tutorial as PDF” has been updated.
1.22 Mar 31
– New: A dispatch mode that simplifies and speeds up even large-scale tidying-up tasks: Open the source folder (e.g. “Desktop” or “Downloads”; these are the places where files tend to accumulate) alongside a preview panel in one rack, and as many different target folders as you like in one or more additional racks. Example: 2 racks, each with 8 target panels (i.e. 16 in total), have positions 3, 4, ... up to 18. Select files in the source folder and move them very quickly and without additional prompts by pressing the target panel numbers (3, 4, ..., 0 = 10, Shift + 1 = 11, ..., Shift + 0 = 20) to move them quickly and without any additional prompts. Holding down the Option key copies the files. You can see an example in the App Store screenshots. You can, of course, save the layout under a name for future use and load it again and again. Tidying up has never been easier!
– Toolbar: Clicking on the text below the path selection box displays the bookmarks (just like Shift + click).
– “Window” menu, “Enter Position”: Enter position and size manually (I added this for my App Store screenshots).
– “File” menu, “File List as PDF”: Creates a list of the selected (or all) files and folders in the folder, showing name, date and size.
1.21 Mar 27
– Adjustments for macOS 15 Sequoia (incl. option to change app icon)
1.20 Mar 21
– The small confirmation dialogue box can now also be operated using keys (space bar, return key, O for OK and C for Cancel).
– The rename input field should now also be displayed correctly in dark mode.
1.18 Mar 11
– Minor improvements to the preview panel
1.17 Mar 10
– Setup, tab “1: General”: Reactivate old icon with transparent frame and protruding magnifying glass for macOS before macOS 26 Tahoe.
– Setup, tab “6: Sandbox”: Single “security-scoped bookmarks” can be deleted.
– In addition to the existing selection “All of same Type”, there is now “Select All of same Date”: if you do not want to sort by “date” but want to see files of the same age.
1.16 Feb 28
– In the left-hand toolbar selection box, you can now rename the displayed names for paths and bookmarks without physically renaming the folder or file, of course. Since the last path component is used as the name, this helps to distinguish between elements with the same name more easily. And sometimes the default name is simply too long or not very meaningful.
– For Smart Columns, which display the pixel resolution for images, the page number for PDFs and the duration for audio/video files (and can of course also be sorted), there are two new switches in the “View” menu and in the settings:
– To speed up the display of very large directories, metadata reading can now be disabled.
– Since iCloud files may need to be downloaded, this can be disabled separately with another switch. (thanks to Frank!)
1.15 Feb 26
Since I use Folder Rack myself on a daily basis, there are regular minor updates with improvements, bug fixes and the like. Any special news will be posted here. Thank you for using Folder Rack!
1.14 Feb 21
– Small fixes for Dark Mode (Command + 0)
1.12 Feb 12
– Adjustments for macOS 26 Tahoe
– Menu option „View, Show Icon Preview”: Next to the file name, either the (general) file icon or the (file-specific) preview icon can be displayed.
1.11 Feb 11
– The toolbar lists for folders and bookmarks contain a tooltip with the complete path.
– Date columns show relative values such as “today”, “yesterday” etc.
– New “Folder” column: this is particularly useful in panels with search results where the items are not all located in the same folder.
– Web links (URLs) are saved as .webloc files in “Clipboard, Save as File”. When opened, the browser is automatically launched with the URL.
– You can also drag selected text, images, PDFs, and URLs directly from Safari into a panel with the mouse. Depending on the type, a corresponding file is created; for example, a URL results in a .webloc file, and text results in a .txt file.
1.10 09/04/2025
– Fixed a bug that prevented changing folders in a panel after switching the language or Light / Dark mode.
