Port Forwarding Helper helps solve a common problem: how to make Screen Sharing on a Mac inside a private network accessible remotely through encrypted SSH tunnels. 1. On the sharing Mac: forward Screen Sharing to your server Enable Screen Sharing, then set up reverse forwarding (-R) to map its local port to a port on your own SSH server. 2. On the connecting Mac: connect through another tunnel Set up local forwarding (-L) to reach the mapped port on the server, then point your screen sharing client at the local port. Each Mac communicates with the server over its own encrypted SSH connection, with the server acting as a trusted relay. A friendly reminder: do not open the mapped port to the public internet in your server firewall or cloud security group. Connect through the second SSH tunnel to avoid adding an entry point for scanning the Screen Sharing service, guessing passwords, and attempting to exploit vulnerabilities. Port Forwarding Helper runs in your menu bar with multiple tunnels, connection status, automatic reconnection, encrypted private key storage, and encrypted configuration import and export. Requires your own SSH server with forwarding enabled and an OpenSSH-format Ed25519 or ECDSA private key, with or without a passphrase; RSA keys and SSH account password authentication are not supported. Screen Sharing must be enabled separately in macOS; the app does not include a server or remote desktop client. The same tunneling approach also works with TCP services such as Windows RDP.
