Related Words, Rebuilt
- Transitive/intransitive pairs finally show up for the verbs you actually meet - 消える/消す, 入る/入れる, 出る/出す and hundreds more, sourced from a curated list instead of a hopeful guess. The guess has been thanked for its service.
- No more ghost pairs - 終わる no longer claims 卒す as its partner, because 卒す is not a word anyone has said since the Heian period.
- Related words are proper rows now: word, reading, meaning - so "see also" tells you what you're seeing before you tap it.
- Pair first, antonym next, see-also ranked by how common the word is, with the long tail tucked behind "Show more". Fourteen unranked chips was a test of faith, not a feature.
- Tapping a related word opens the right entry even for look-alikes - 開く (あく) no longer teleports you to ひらく.
New: Lists Beyond JLPT
- Jōyō kanji by school grade, Kanken 10級-2級, and frequency tiers from Top 1,000 down to 9,001-10,000 - all browsable next to JLPT. Your study plan can now be as ambitious as your guilt.
- Every list builds a one-tap preset deck, kanji lists included, in list order. Deck building is now a reflex, not a weekend.
- Filter any word list by study status - All, Not known, Known, In a deck - so you stop rediscovering words you already own.
- Sort list detail by list order, stroke count, or reading, and come back from a word without losing your place. Scrolling to row 412 twice is character-building; we've spared you the character.
Word Frequency, For Real
- Word commonness now comes from a corpus of contemporary spoken Japanese instead of dictionary tags from the dial-up era. Words your friends say now rank above words your textbook says.
- Stars in kanji details reflect the written form you're looking at - rare spellings lose theirs, and search-only spellings stop showing up uninvited.
Kanji Details
- New Components section listing every part of a kanji, each tappable into radical search with that part pre-selected. Building 議 from pieces feels like IKEA, minus the leftover screw.
- Readings now understand rendaku and sokuon - 仕事 counts for ごと, 学校 counts for がっ - so hundreds of common words stopped hiding in "unknown".
- The jōyō glyph variants of 剥 填 頬 叱 now find their words instead of staring at an empty page. Four kanji, one very long overdue apology.
- Long-press an example word in a kanji page to stash it for a card, same as sentences. Hoarding, still productive.
- Dictionary index numbers moved to a labelled footer at the end of the page, where reference codes belong and nobody will read them.
Fixes
- Radical search cells on iOS no longer gray out at random - a string was being freed mid-query, which is not the kind of freedom anyone asked for.
3.6.0 Aug 22
Thank you for using Kiratoru! Here's what we shipped this time:
Kanji Readings, Redesigned
- Readings are now tappable chips — tap セイ and the word list below instantly shows only words using that reading. The old filter menu retired; nobody attended the farewell party.
- Common readings first — Rare readings and name readings now wait politely behind "Show all readings" instead of ambushing you with eighteen ways to read 生.
- Okurigana finally styled like okurigana — いきる with the ending dimmed, instead of dictionary-file punctuation from 1991.
- New setting: choose whether kanji cards are prefilled with common readings only (recommended) or everything. Your cards, your clutter.
New: JLPT Everywhere
- Every kanji and word now wears its JLPT level, N5–N1 — so you know whether you're reading beginner material or accidentally studying for a test you didn't sign up for.
- Browse full JLPT lists, level by level, with progress percentages that update as you learn. Watching N5 hit 100% is cheaper than therapy.
- One-tap JLPT preset decks — an instant, ready-to-study deck per level. Deck building for people who'd rather be studying.
- Items already in your decks get marked in the lists, so you stop re-adding 食べる for the fourth time.
New: Search by Radicals
- Build a kanji from its parts — pick radicals, watch the candidates narrow. For all those "I can see it but I can't type it" kanji.
New: Share Extension (iOS)
- Send text or images to Kiratoru from any app's share sheet — lookup or OCR without the copy-paste gymnastics. Safari, photos, that one chat app, all of it.
New: Known Words
- Mark words as known — or let the app figure it out from your review history. Known words dim in search results, so new vocabulary actually stands out.
- Type romaji, get results — "tabemono" finds 食べ物 now. Your keyboard's kana layout can take the day off.
Decks & Review
- Review prep got an overhaul — reliable session launches, smarter daily limits, cross-deck preparation, and an end-of-session results screen that shows what actually moved.
- Study ahead when you feel like it, without wrecking tomorrow's schedule. The algorithm forgives, and now it also forgets to punish.
- Adding a duplicate card now asks first, because "the same card five times" is a memorization strategy, not a good one.
- Long-press an example sentence to stash it for your next card. Hoarding, but productive.
Fixes
- Chips no longer inflate row heights while secretly growing 44pt tap targets. Small thumbs rejoice; layouts stay calm.
3.5.0 Aug 18
Thank you for using Kiratoru! Here's what we shipped this time:
A Whole New Look
- Redesigned basically everything — Capture, lookup, decks, review, and saved were all rebuilt around a calmer Japanese-stationery palette (indigo, vermilion, washi paper). It finally looks like an app that respects kanji.
- Brand-new app icon — A fresh face on your home screen. You can stop squinting to find us between the other 200 apps.
- Tidier card lists and saved screens — Cleaner layouts, less clutter, far fewer "why is that there" moments.
- A sidebar that color-codes itself — Due counts now wear their own deck's color, Review All borrows your accent, and the settings gear has stopped playing hide-and-seek.
New: Furigana Overlay (Mac)
Readings, right on top of the source — Open the Furigana Overlay and furigana appear over the actual text in the window you're reading, so your eyes never make the round trip to a dictionary pane and back. Tap any word to look it up. Especially good for games and anything else that refuses to hold still.
New: Home-screen widgets
Your daily Japanese, at a glance — Word of the day and kanji of the day live on your home screen, and a review widget lets you grade cards without even opening the app. Your home screen finally does something more useful than counting your unread notifications.
New: Stash
Reading a kanji's page and find words worth keeping? Stash them. When you add that kanji to a deck, every stashed word come — and then the stash clears itself, because cleanup is nobody's idea of a good time.
Live Lookup is now free
We ungated it — Live, a be a Pro perk. It isn't anymore. Everyone gets it now: no catch, no asterisk, no "well, actually."
Decks & Review
- Smoother review animations that actually feel like motion, instead of a slideshow having second thoughts.
- Polished review scree reviewing feels less like a chore and more like a slightly nicer chore.
Fixes
- Fixed frequency indicuency badge no longer wraps in ways that made it look personally offended.
- The no longer assumes you've been quietly demoted to Free when you launch it. Pro stays Pro until the App Store says otherwise.
Under the Hood
- Faster "words using this kanji" — Optimized that lookup so the list of words containing a kanj waiting and fewer spinners to stare at.

Thank you for using Kiratoru! Here’s what we shipped this time:
Fixes
Fixed kanji detail taps doing absolutely nothing — Tapping a kanji now actually opens its detail page, which felt like a pretty bold expectation but here we are.
Decks & Review
Beautiful new review prep screen — Better layout, better controls, better vibes. Reviewing now looks like we meant it.
More session modes — Due only, manual count, new cards, weak cards, and more. Because apparently chaos needed categories.
New minimum card count setting — You can now set a minimum number of cards for a deck, so low-due days stop being overachievers in the wrong direction.
Smarter review filling — Added better fill strategies, including actual random. Not “random” in the “same every time” sense.
Fixed review prep crashes — The slider no longer explodes when given the opportunity.
Passive Cards
Fixed passive card creation on import — Imported decks now create passive counterparts properly, even when passive cards are disabled.
Better card counts — Totals now respect passive-card settings instead of doing mystery math.
SRS & Stability
Fixed daily new-card limits — “Daily” now means daily, not “as many times as you reopen the screen.”
Fixed undo and session behavior — Reviews behave more consistently, including manual and weak-card sessions.
Improved notification and sync behavior — Fewer stale badges, fewer zombie reminders, less haunted-house energy.
Under the Hood
Expanded the SRS test suite a lot — Because trust is good, but tests are less emotional.

Thank you for using Kiratoru! Here’s what we shipped this time:
Dictionary & Lookup
- More accurate labels — “Usually written in kana” now appears where it actually should, not where it feels right.
- New frequency display — Words now show frequency in a clearer Freq X/Y format, so you can judge vocabulary with confidence.
- Cleaner word details — Duplicate alternate spellings are gone. If you see something twice now, that’s on purpose.
- Better reading display — Alternate forms now appear in a cleaner style like 寿司[すし], because good typography is also language learning.
Kanji Improvements
- Radical navigation is here — Tap a radical to see other kanji with the same radical. It’s like family reunions, but useful.
- Similar Kanji section improved — Better suggestions, cleaner behavior, and no awkward empty sections pretending to be helpful.
- Nanori reading finally — Name readings now appear with the other reading types, because exile is over.
Words Containing This Kanji
- Now grouped by reading type — 音読み, 訓読み, Mixed, and Unknown so browsing examples makes sense at a glance.
- Furigana highlighting improved — The relevant reading part is highlighted directly in examples, not “close enough” highlighted.
Add to Deck Quality of Life
- Smarter deck preselection for words — Kiratoru remembers which deck you used for similar word types, like a friend who actually listens.
- Smarter deck preselection for kanji — It also remembers your last kanji deck choice, so fewer taps, more studying.
Performance & Stability
- Fixed kanji detail loading stalls — “Words containing this kanji” no longer spins forever like it’s buffering in 2009.
- Smoother kanji opening — Fewer freezes and faster detail rendering.
- Better background cleanup — Improved storage behavior for OCR temp files which used to take up 10s of GB of space (oopsie)
Decks & Review
- Fixed “Review All” blank page on Deck list — tapping it now opens the actual review session instead of a minimalist void experience
- Added a Review FAB on Deck Detail (when cards are due) — because scrolling is a choice, not a requirement
Kanji Detail Improvements
- Fixed furigana highlight logic in word examples so matching segments are detected more reliably, including kana normalization (hiragana/katakana mismatch no longer ruins the party)
- Made matching furigana segment bold so the highlight is actually visible and not doing stealth mode

Thank you for using Kiratoru! Here’s what’s new in v1.2:
Review Flow Upgrades
Review All button — One tap to review everything, because opening decks one by one was starting to feel like paperwork.
Mid-review Undo — Made a chaotic button tap? Undo is here to save your streak (and your dignity).
Rebalanced review buttons — Better spacing/weighting so your thumb stops making “creative” choices.
Reschedule by memory — New option to reschedule all cards in a deck based on memory performance. Think of it as a gentle calendar intervention.
Smarter Deck Controls
Active vs Passive separation setting — Keep your decks organized by study mode instead of pure vibes.
Group review inclusion setting — Choose which decks join grouped reviews, so your “someday” deck can stop ambushing you.
Notifications & Sync
Grouped due notifications — When many decks are due, notifications now bundle things intelligently instead of pinging like popcorn.
Sync fixes — Reliability improvements so your cards stay in agreement across devices (as nature intended).
UI Improvements
Improved card display — Cleaner presentation during study, fewer squints per session.
