STACKED DISCOUNTS, EXPLAINED
When a price drops 20% and then another 10%, the total is not 30%. On a $1,100 item the final price is $792, which is 28% off. This discount calculator applies each percent off one after another, so you can see what you will really pay before you reach the checkout.

GOOD TO KNOW
• Two discounts in a row are always a little smaller than their sum: 20% + 10% = 28%.
• The order does not change the result: 20% then 10% equals 10% then 20%.
• A single 30% discount (multiplier 0.70) beats 20% then 10% (multiplier 0.72).
• Margin is profit divided by the selling price; markup is profit divided by cost.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I calculate a discount?
Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Example: a $500 item at 20% off is 500 × 0.80 = $400.
How do I calculate two discounts in a row?
Discounts are applied one after another, they do not add up. For 20% then 10% the multiplier is 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72, so the total discount is 28%.
How do I find the original price?
Original price = sale price ÷ (1 − discount ÷ 100). If you paid $900 after 25% off, the original price was 900 ÷ 0.75 = $1,200.
How do I find the price before tax?
Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). Example: $108 with 8% tax is 108 ÷ 1.08 = $100.
How do I calculate profit margin?
Margin % = (selling price − cost) ÷ selling price × 100. Cost $80 and price $100 give $20 profit, a 20% margin and a 25% markup.
