Keytones is a menubar app that provides auditory and visual feedback while you type, helping you distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters. Anyone who (like the app’s author, for example) can’t touch-type but has to look at the keyboard while typing will immediately notice if they haven’t hit the Shift key quite right or have accidentally pressed the Caps Lock key.
AUDIO FEEDBACK
You can customize the sound separately for uppercase letters, lowercase letters, the spacebar, and the modifier keys to suit your needs. Use the included sounds or import your own. Adjust the pitch, duration, damping, and volume individually.
VISUAL FEEDBACK
If you can’t use the audio feedback—for example, because you’re in a meeting or your headphones have too much audio latency—you can turn on the visual feedback. With every keystroke, the bottom edge of the screen lights up briefly, allowing you to distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters out of the corner of your eye. You can separately configure the color, position, size, and fade-out behavior of the highlight for uppercase letters, lowercase letters, the spacebar, and the modifier keys.
BATTERY-SAVING LOW-LATENCY AUDIO ENGINE
The app has been optimized to operate without delay while consuming as few resources as possible. When not in use, the audio engine shuts off after a few seconds. Please note that Bluetooth audio devices such as headphones have an inherent latency due to physical and technical limitations that no app in the world can overcome.
HANDY ADDITIONAL FEATURES
- Blacklist and whitelist for apps: You can specify that Keytones be enabled or disabled only for certain apps.
- Keytones automatically remembers the audio volume for each audio device, so you don’t have to tediously adjust it manually every time.
- Supports Siri & Shortcuts
Unless unlocked with a one-time purchase, Keytones works for 1.000 keytrokes per day.
