Turn videos and stills into perceptual palettes. Explore color over time, reanalyze an excerpt, and export PNG, SVG, ASE, JSON, CSS, or hex lists. PaletteFrame finds the color language of videos and still images—then turns it into something you can inspect, share, and use. Drop in a source and the app begins analyzing on your Mac. Choose 5, 7, 10, or 12 dominant colors, select an analysis depth, and choose an automatic hero frame—the sharpest candidate or the frame that best represents the overall palette—then accept it or pick from 24 analyzed candidates. A large preview shows the hero frame with its palette. EDIT THE PALETTE Change the number of colors and the palette updates in about a second, without reanalyzing. Remove colors, lock the ones you want to keep, drag swatches into a new order, and pick extra colors from the hero frame with the eyedropper. Dominance is recalculated after every edit, so the percentages always add up to 100%. Copy any color, or the whole palette, as HEX, RGB, HSL, or OKLCH. PERCEPTUAL COLOR ANALYSIS PaletteFrame groups sampled colors in OKLab, a perceptual color space designed so numeric distance better follows visual difference. The deterministic pipeline normalizes output to sRGB, removes near-duplicate colors, and sorts by dominance. Black letterbox and pillarbox bars are detected across the video and left out, so a widescreen film's palette describes the picture, not the bars. COLOR STORY For videos, PaletteFrame builds a time-segmented Color Story during the same streaming analysis pass. Higher analysis depths create progressively denser timelines, culminating in Exhaustive. Select a segment to inspect its representative frame and local palette, or use that frame as the hero frame. Drag across the timeline, or set start and end points, to reanalyze a specific excerpt, then export the complete timeline or an edge-to-edge color-bar-only PNG. EXPORT STUDIO Preview and configure the handoff before saving: • Reference card PNG with hero frame, swatches, hex codes, and optional dominance • Palette strip as PNG or SVG • Adobe Swatch Exchange (ASE) for Adobe creative apps • JSON with sRGB and OKLab values • CSS custom properties • Plain-text hex list • Color Story timeline or color-bar-only PNG Choose native, HD, 2K, 4K, or a custom output width where the format supports dimensions. Raster exports support 72, 144, or 300 DPI metadata. Save reusable Export Studio presets for repeatable delivery. Batch Export analyzes several videos and images in turn and saves one export per file to a folder you choose. File > Open Recent reopens recent sources, and you can open files from Finder with Open With or by dropping them on the Dock icon. BROAD SOURCE SUPPORT Video containers: • MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, AVI, WebM • MPG, MPEG, FLV, WMV • AVCHD (MTS, M2TS), TS, 3GP Common codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, ProRes, VP8, VP9, AV1, MPEG-4, and Motion JPEG. PaletteFrame uses AVFoundation and VideoToolbox first, then retries with its bundled FFmpeg runtime when the system decoder cannot return frames. Still images include JPEG, PNG, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF, WebP, and GIF. FOUR ANALYSIS DEPTHS Fast, Standard, Deep, and Exhaustive modes let you choose the balance between turnaround and sampling density. Analysis decodes the next frames while the current ones are sampled across all cores, and heavy work stays off the main thread so the interface remains responsive. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Media decoding, pixel sampling, color analysis, and export happen on your Mac. PaletteFrame does not upload your source media or sampled colors. Requires macOS 26 or later and an Apple Silicon Mac.

New • Edit your palette. Remove colors, lock the ones you want to keep, drag swatches to reorder them, and pick extra colors straight from the hero frame with the eyedropper. • Change the number of colors without reanalyzing. The palette updates in about a second, and locked colors stay in place. • Letterboxed films: black bars above and below the picture (or beside it) are detected and left out of the palette, the Color Story, and your exports. Turn off Ignore Letterbox to keep them. • Copy colors as HEX, RGB, HSL, or OKLCH. • A large hero frame preview now shows the frame and its palette together. Use the arrow keys to browse hero candidates. • Batch Export: drop several videos or images (or choose File > Batch Export) to analyze each one and save its export to a folder. • Open Recent in the File menu, including after you restart the app. • Open videos and images from Finder with Open With, or by dropping them on the Dock icon. • Color Story: drag across the timeline to choose an excerpt, or use any segment's frame as the hero frame. • Adds support for AVCHD (MTS, M2TS), TS, and 3GP video. Faster • Video analysis is faster, especially for WebM, MKV, and other formats decoded by FFmpeg. Results are the same as before. Fixed • "Sharpest" hero frame selection now judges the whole frame. Before, it could choose a frame based only on one corner. • Colors from WebM, MKV, AVI, and other FFmpeg-decoded videos are now accurate and match those from MP4 and MOV. • Portrait videos from iPhone now export as portrait reference cards. • Color percentages now add up to 100%. • Fixed videos where every sample showed the same frame, or where frames far into the file couldn't be read. • Image exports at Native size now use the image's full original resolution. • Canceling a reanalysis now keeps your previous results. • New Source now asks before discarding your current results. • Saving over an existing file no longer risks losing the original if the save fails.
