Ohai Markdown Viewer
Live canvas for AI & science
Only for Mac

Mac
Watch Claude, Codex, and other agents render math, chemistry, diagrams, and code in real-time. The native macOS canvas for markdown.
Stop reading raw text in your terminal.
Ohai is a native macOS markdown viewer built for the age of AI. It acts as a real-time canvas for tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot. As your AI writes reports, generates charts, embeds code, or updates task lists, Ohai renders them instantly, no refresh button required.
THE AI COMPANION
Don't stare at | ID | Name | table syntax or image file paths. Open Ohai side-by-side with your terminal. When Claude generates a "Q4 Analysis Report," you see the actual report. When it creates a chart, the image snaps into place immediately.
LIVE CODE & DATA EMBEDDING
Write a wiki-link to a function name and the function body renders in place, syntax-highlighted, pulled straight from your source files. AST-powered extraction works across 40+ languages: Python, Swift, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Rust, Java, C, C++, Ruby, Kotlin, and more. Edit the source, the doc updates.
Build live dashboards from JSON, YAML, TOML, and Plist. Wiki-link to a JSON path and the value drops inline, kept in sync forever. Your README and your code stop drifting apart.
FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS
• KaTeX math, inline and block, for physics, statistics, and engineering writeups
• Mermaid diagrams for system architecture, sequence, state, and Gantt charts
• Graphviz for dependency graphs and topology
• Chart.js for interactive data visualization
• SMILES rendering via SmilesDrawer for organic chemistry and drug discovery, with inline structures supported inside sentences
• 3Dmol with PDB, SDF, and XYZ for protein engineering and structural biology
• SeqViz for genomics and molecular biology, with linear and circular DNA and protein viewers
• Phylotree for phylogenetics and evolutionary biology
• Ideogram for cytogenetics and chromosome research
• ABC notation for music composition and sheet music
OBSIDIAN AND GITHUB COMPATIBLE
If you live in Obsidian, your notes work here: wiki-links, transclusions, callouts, CriticMarkup tracked changes, highlights, hidden comments, and image sizing all render the same way. GitHub-flavored markdown is fully supported: task lists, tables, fenced code with 185+ syntax-highlighted languages, and GitHub-style callouts. Collapsible headings and inline video (.mp4, .mov, .m4v, .webm) round out the rendering.
NATIVE AND FAST
Built with 100% native macOS technologies. It feels like part of the system, not a web browser in a box.
• Instant Hot-Reload: kernel-level file watching means zero latency
• Beautiful Typography: optimized for reading with dynamic type sizing
• Native UI: sidebar navigation, vibrancy, and dark mode
• QuickLook and Thumbnails: preview markdown anywhere in Finder
EXPORT AND AUTOMATE
Ship serious documents. Export to HTML, PDF, DOCX, or processed Markdown. Every diagram, every equation, every formatted block carries through. DOCX export rasterizes JavaScript-rendered content so your Word doc looks right on every machine.
Drive Ohai from the command line with the ohaimarkdown CLI, or script it from AppleScript: hide the sidebar, change themes, scroll to a heading, or export a file, all programmatically.
SECURE BY DESIGN
Ohai runs in the App Sandbox. It only reads files you explicitly open or folders you grant access to.
PERFECT FOR
• AI Workflows: watch agents complete tasks in real-time
• Data Science: view reports and generated graphs as they are created
• Scientific Writing: math, chemistry, biology, and diagrams without leaving your editor
• Documentation: read READMEs and wikis as they were meant to be seen, with live values that never go stale
Localized into 19 languages.
Download Ohai and give your AI a place to show its work.

Version 1.3 — a major leap.
Symbolic transclusion: embed code symbols from 40+ languages with ![[file.py#function_name]]. Your API docs stay in sync with the actual code. Bundled language guides cover Python, Swift, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Rust, Java, C, C++, Ruby, Kotlin, and more.
Scientific markdown comes alive. Inline math with $…$, block math with $$…$$, all rendered with KaTeX. Mermaid diagrams, Chart.js charts, Graphviz, ABC music notation. Chemistry rendering with SmilesDrawer — including inline structures like `smi:CC(=O)Oc1ccccc1C(=O)O` that drop straight into your sentences. SeqViz for DNA/RNA, phylogenetic trees, 3Dmol for 3D molecule viewers, Ideogram for chromosomes.
Polished export for serious documents. HTML, PDF, DOCX, or processed Markdown — every diagram, every equation, every formatted block carries through. DOCX export rasterizes JS-rendered content (math, diagrams, chemistry) into images so your Word doc looks right on every machine.
185+ syntax highlighting languages. Obsidian-style callouts. Collapsible headings. CriticMarkup. Annotations. File watcher with instant reload. QuickLook + Thumbnail extension. Sample Browser. AppleScript control. CLI export pipe.
