Zeeguu: Learn from Real News
Read and listen at your level
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Read news you care about at your level and tap any word to translate it. Then listen to a daily audio lesson built from your words, on a topic or situation you choose.
Learn a language by reading what you love and listening to what you care about.
Zeeguu helps you learn a new language by reading real news articles at your level. When you encounter an unfamiliar word, just tap it for an instant translation - and Zeeguu will remember it for you.
more Aiki mode: pause distracting apps, and earn breaks by learning.
Aiki mode
- New in Settings: choose the apps that distract you, and Zeeguu pauses them for you.
- Each minute you learn in Zeeguu unlocks a few minutes in your paused apps. Reach your daily goal and they stay open for the rest of the day.
- A paused app shows a Zeeguu screen with your progress: today's minutes, one block per minute.
Switching languages
- The menu now shows the flag of the language you are learning.
- When you switch, a spinner shows on the flag until the change is saved, and the app only moves to the new language once it is.
- Right after a switch, exercises now pick words in the new language and read them in the right voice.
Exercises
- The exercise stays in view while the keyboard is open.
- When you have no words left to practise, the message now counts only the words in the language you are learning.
Shared articles
- A shared article can now be translated into any language Zeeguu supports.
1.3.15 3d ago
Start a language from zero, and fairer exercises.
Starting from zero
- A new level for learners who have never studied the language: "Don't know anything".
- At this level your audio lessons start from the very beginning, and your exercises are listening only: hear a word and choose what it means, with nothing to type.
- When you pick a daily situation, you can say whether you speak as a man, a woman, or either, and the lesson's dialogue is written for you.
- Instead of a news feed you cannot read yet, the home page points you to the audio lessons. The feed comes back at A1.
Exercises
- In cloze exercises, if you type another word that also fits the sentence, it is checked before being marked wrong.
- When you type a translation that differs from the saved one, it is checked too, and correct answers count.
- "to look up" and "look up" are now the same answer.
- After an answer, a short line tells you what you typed and how it compares with your saved translation.
- Pressing Enter in an answer field no longer types the first letter of the on-screen keyboard.
- Translations now match the capitalisation of the word they sit over.
Account
- To change your email, you now get a code at the new address to confirm it.
1.3.14 6d ago
Smarter exercises, a new profile page, and more for teachers.
Exercises
- Explain is now available in exercises too.
- When typing a translation, any listed form of the word counts as right.
- In typed cloze exercises, a wrong answer is followed by its correction read aloud.
- Multi-word answers are blanked correctly in sentences that start mid-way.
- Example sentences show when there are more to see, with a swipe hint on touch screens.
- Words you already know well move faster through the level bar, with a celebration when they are learned.
Feed and reading
- A story covered by several outlets now lists them all as equals.
- Shared summaries let you switch level and sign up at the level you chose.
Profile and settings
- Settings now sit behind your profile, and you edit your avatar on the profile page.
- Daily lesson settings are shown even before your first lesson arrives.
- Every learner can now delete a daily lesson.
History
- Words from a browsing session appear under the article they came from.
- Words you have practised since are marked.
For teachers
- A new page for each class text shows the words the class looked up in it.
- Reading sessions show a focus strip of when the student was active.
- A compact student table and a cleaner class page.
- Add Text opens the editor straight away.
- Opening a student's text no longer shows a blank page.
1.3.13 Oct 17
Share a summary, smoother audio, and a lot more for teachers.
Sharing
- Share the summary of an article, straight from the article preview.
Audio
- Play from your headphones works again after the lesson has been paused for a long time.
- The player stays in sync when you come back to the app.
History
- Pick the period you want to look at, from one date to another.
- Clearer history cards: what you did and for how long come first, then the details.
For teachers
- A new Activity tab for each student: what they read and practised, the words they looked up, and the original article.
- Open a text from a student's activity and see their translations in place.
- A student's Words tab now shows their words the way they see them.
- Sort the class list by name or by how active students are, and search for a student.
- Students who likely have two accounts in the same class are flagged and shown side by side.
- Each class card shows when the class was last active.
- Decide whether the students of a class can see each other.
1.3.12 Oct 14
Faster audio, a friendlier feed, and a few fixes.
Audio
- Listen faster: the speed button now opens a menu with 1.1x, 1.25x and 1.5x alongside the slower speeds.
- Play from your headphones or the lock screen works again after pausing from there.
Feed
- Changing your level from the feed no longer reloads the page. The current articles stay on screen while the ones at your new level load in, so you can see the difference right away.
- The top bar with your language, streak and avatar comes back as soon as you scroll up, so you can switch language without scrolling all the way to the top.
- Hid an article by mistake? Tap Undo to bring it back.
- Report a broken article, or something that is not really an article, straight from the card's menu.
- Articles without a photo now show the publisher's name in its place, so every card is easy to tell apart.
Sign-up
- Students joining with a class code are no longer asked for an email code that never arrives.
1.3.11 Oct 3
Two small improvements to the article feed.
- Changing your level from the feed no longer reloads the page. The current articles stay on screen while the ones at your new level load in, so you can see the difference right away.
- The top bar with your language, streak and avatar now comes back as soon as you scroll up, so you can switch language without scrolling all the way to the top.
1.3.10 Sep 29
Working with expressions in the reader got a lot better this time.
- You can now grow an expression. Tap the word next to one you have already translated and the two join into a single expression, instead of having to ungroup and rebuild it by hand.
- Every join you make gets its own unlink mark, right where the join is. Tapping it separates just that one, so you can take an expression apart a piece at a time instead of undoing the last join wherever it happened to be.
- Fixed: unlinking an expression could drop a word from the page entirely. If you fused two expressions and then took them apart, part of the sentence went missing.
- Fixed: after widening an expression, the translation you got back was for the old, narrower one.
- While a separated piece waits for its translation, it now holds its place with a blinking chip, so the line no longer jumps and settles.
- Tap a translated word to hide its translation. The little eye icon on the chip is gone; the word itself is the switch now.
- Translated words are easier to read. The orange was very light against the cream background, so text and underline are a darker shade that meets the accessibility contrast standard.
- Underlines stop at the word they belong to. Two expressions side by side used to share one unbroken line and read as a single unit.
In the feed:
- The topic now sits above the headline as a quiet label, the way a newspaper sets a section over a story, with the source on a single line underneath. The headline is the loudest thing on the card again.
- Tapping that topic narrows the feed to it, rather than opening the article by accident. Back undoes the filter.
1.3.8 Sep 28
Explain any word, in the sentence you are reading.
- Tap a translation and choose Explain. You get what the word means right there: the parts it is built from if it is a compound, the whole meaning if it is an idiom, whether it is formal or rude, and the dictionary form. A Danish word like "narrøv" translated as "foolish ass" now tells you it is "nar" (fool) plus "røv" (arse), rather than leaving you to guess.
- Explain replaces Ask AI, which fetched another translation rather than explaining anything.
- Bulgarian is now available to learn, with news, audio lessons and exercises.
Also:
- The summary on an article now says when it was written by AI, above the text rather than only on the card.
- Article cards put the topic on one line and the source on the next, so the line no longer breaks in the middle and starts with a dot.
1.3.7 Sep 27
Article cards, rebuilt around the photo.
In the feed:
- The photo now comes first on every card. A picture tells you what an article is about before you have to read a headline in a language you are still learning.
- The photo also says where tapping will take you: Read for an article you can read inside Zeeguu, Summary for one that opens a summary first.
- Save sits on the photo, and Hide has moved into the … menu beside the article details, so it stays out of the way until you want it.
- The three feed views — Headlines, Preview and Interactive — now look and behave the same.
Also:
- Summaries no longer get cut off mid-word on wider screens.
1.3.6 Sep 26
Share what you are reading with anyone.
Sharing articles:
- A shared article now opens for people who don't have Zeeguu. They can read the whole article in their browser, tap up to 10 words for a translation, and then create an account or get the app.
- Article links are short and look the same whether you copy them from the address bar or press Share.
- Tapping a shared Zeeguu link opens the article straight in the app.
- An article that was already simplified no longer asks to be adapted again when it is opened from a shared link.
Also:
- New accounts that haven't verified their email yet no longer see a misleading "can't reach the server" message, and the verify-email screen shows up properly again.
- The About page can now be opened while you are logged in.
1.3.5 Sep 25
Hear the variety of the language you are actually learning.
Audio lessons:
- Language Settings now asks which variety of your language should be read to you. A Brazilian Portuguese learner has until now been hearing European Portuguese; you can say which one you want, and your daily lesson is voiced that way.
- The question is only asked for languages whose varieties have a voice, so most learners see nothing new.
- If you have never chosen, the variety you are already hearing is shown as selected - the screen tells you what you get instead of leaving it blank.
Signing up:
- The two regional questions - which country's news you read, and which variety is spoken to you - are now asked together, on a step of their own. They used to be split across two screens, where one was easily mistaken for the other.
- That step is skipped entirely when the language you are learning has no varieties to ask about.
- A variety picked while signing up is now actually saved. Before, you could choose Belgium, finish signing up, and find something else selected in Settings.
Also:
- Every label on the language form is now the learner speaking: "I want news from", "I want audio lessons spoken in".
- The language forms now put visible space between groups of questions, instead of reading as one long list.
1.3.4 Sep 12
Pick your variety of a language, and know when a text was written by a machine.
Language varieties:
- If you are learning Dutch or Portuguese, you can now say which variety you want - Belgian or Netherlands Dutch, Brazilian or European Portuguese. Pick it while signing up, or later in Language Settings. "Any" stays the default, and is what everyone has today.
- The choice is a row of pills with a flag on each, right above your level, so you can see every option without opening anything.
- A variety is a filter, so it can leave you with an empty feed on a quiet day. When that happens the feed now says which country it is filtering for, instead of showing a blank page, and offers a way straight to the setting. If a topic is also selected, it names that too, so you are not sent to the wrong screen.
- Your level now belongs to the language you chose: switching languages re-seeds it instead of quietly saving your Danish level under Portuguese.
Knowing what a machine wrote:
- Article cards now say when their text is machine-written: "AI summary" for a summary we generated, "AI-simplified" for a text adapted to your level. Texts your teacher or a friend uploaded carry no such mark, because their words are their own.
- The reader now names the level a text was written to, rather than calling it "your level" - which stopped being true the moment you changed your setting.
- The link back to the original article carries its level and, for a translated piece, the flag of the language it is in, so you know where following it lands you.
Also:
- Language Settings and signup now ask the same three questions with the same controls, so the level picker looks and behaves the same on both, and reads properly in dark mode.
1.3.3 Sep 11
This release is mostly for teachers and their students.
For teachers:
- My Texts and My Classrooms now look like one product, and read properly in dark mode.
- Filter your texts by class, with a count on each class and a "Not shared" pile for the ones that never went anywhere.
- Each text shows its classes as pills. Tap one to see the rest of what went to that class, or remove it with a single tap - no trip through the sharing dialog.
- The share-with-classes dialog now ranks classes sensibly and gains a search box once you have more than a handful.
- A class page has Students and Texts tabs, with every action on the class in one header.
- A class warns you when it holds texts in a language its students are not learning, since nobody in the class can see those.
- Sorting is a normal dropdown now: it closes when you click away, works with a keyboard, and is readable in dark mode. Added Title A-Z, and Newest and Oldest first.
- A text's difficulty is shown as one level, instead of our pipeline talking to itself.
- Deleting a class takes you back to My Classrooms instead of leaving you on a page that no longer exists.
- The Students tab got its label back, and Add Students no longer appears on a class that has no students yet.
For students:
- Your Classroom now respects the card style you picked in Settings - headlines, preview or interactive.
- If you are in more than one class, each text says which class it came from, and you can filter the list by class.
- Teacher-written texts no longer claim to come from a source called "userarticle".
Everywhere else:
- Profile tabs are real pages, so Back returns you to the tab you left instead of dumping you on Badges.
- Coming back from a friend's profile keeps your search, instead of emptying the box.
- Friend search results show the languages someone is learning and when they were last active, so you can tell apart two people with the same name.
- A simplified article's byline now says what it was simplified from, as in "Simplified to A1 from B2".
- When a friend shares an article, the dialog offers the level we will actually adapt to, and closing it now means neither option rather than quietly picking one.
- Your daily lesson is dated by the day it was made, not the day you happen to open it.
1.3.2 Sep 9
- Shared articles now show up the moment a friend sends them. The inbox badge updates while you are looking at the screen, instead of waiting for you to navigate somewhere else.
- In Headlines view you can tap a word in the headline to translate it, without opening the article first. Each headline also gets its own Open button.
- Editing your own translation now happens in a proper dialog with a Save button, so it finally works with a phone keyboard.
- The translation card opens above the word when there is no room below it.
- Fixed: learners of Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese got no keyboard at all when typing a translation. The native keyboard is back.
- Teachers can now set a class so that students see only the texts the teacher shares.
- Dark mode fixes: the word editing dialog, the add-your-own-word form and the account upgrade dialog are all readable again.
- The password rules message now matches the password rules.
1.3.1 Aug 26
- New in Settings: Reading, then Text and highlighting. Everything about how text behaves when you tap it - translation, pronunciation, the reading timer, multi-word expression hints and text size - now has one clear home, with a line explaining what each option does.
- The article preview sheet is calmer to read: close it from the top-left corner, and the big "Read the original" button now waits at the end of the summary, right where you have decided whether it is worth your time.
- Swipe the preview away with a quick flick - no more dragging it halfway across the screen.
- Fixed: words you translated in a preview stay translated when you close it and open it again.
- Fixed: preview photos are no longer cropped.
1.3.0 Aug 16
- Tidier feed cards: in Headlines view, a small thumbnail sits next to the title on wider screens, and Save and Hide are now clear labelled buttons in the same place in every view.
- A roomier, calmer article preview: more breathing room, a dimmer backdrop so the feed behind it recedes, and the settings gear where you expect it.
- Fixed: tapping a word in the article preview on desktop now opens the alternatives menu right next to the word instead of far off to the side.
- Fixed: no more double spinner when the feed reloads or you switch topics.
- Fixed: the word game shown while you wait is readable again in dark mode.
- Fixed: launching the app without a connection now tells you you are offline instead of spinning forever.
