Psaltica Praxis
Play and Learn Byzantine Music
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Compose Byzantine music, edit lyrics, print scores, and now choose how each expression sign sounds, note by note, from the readings the theory allows.
Psaltica Praxis is a Byzantine chant composition and notation app for iPhone and iPad, built for chanters, students, teachers, and composers of liturgical music.
Learn a hymn by ear, then by eye. Each neume lights up as it sounds, so you can see exactly which note is playing, where you are in the chant, and why the melody moves the way it does. A printed book cannot show you that, and a recording cannot either. Loop any phrase until it is memorized, slow the tempo, and inspect any neume for its mode, pitch, and interval.
Write chant the way it is actually sung. Enter neumes on a specialized Byzantine keyboard with gorgons, martyria, fthoras, ison, expressive signs, accidentals, and time symbols, then hear the hymn play back in the correct mode.
Edit directly in the score with cursor-based insertion, replacement, selection, copy, and paste. Add multilingual lyrics in Greek, Arabic, English, and more, compose in LTR or RTL layouts, and organize your hymns in the composition library.
Notation and editing tools include:
- Cluster-aware Byzantine symbol entry and editing
- Customizable keyboard palettes and a More Notes keyboard
- Petasti variants and expressive signs including Varia, Omalon, Antikenoma, Psifiston, and Eteron
- Expression signs that take their reading from the surrounding music, with a different reading selectable note by note

Ratings & Reviews
A large update to how expression signs sound, how notation lines up, and how big scores perform.
New signs
• Continuous Elafron, plus eight compound neumes built on a subordinated Oligon.
• Half-diesis accidentals now resolve to their correct oriental pitch.
Expression signs play by the theory
• Omalon, Antikenoma, Eteron, Varia, Petasti and Psifiston now choose their reading from the surrounding music instead of a fixed duration setting.
• Tap a sign to pick a different reading note by note.
• The Note Inspector shows which reading is playing and why.
• The sign picker shows both sides of each variant's equation, drawn on the note you are editing, in your composition's own mode and direction.
• Eteron and Omalon draw in the correct order in right-to-left compositions.
• Eteron bridges the whole pair on short neumes.
Tempo and measures
• Insert double-tempo and half-tempo signs mid-composition.
• Double-tap a tempo sign for presets or an exact BPM.
• Per-measure beat overrides now include 1 and 1/2.
Ison and modifiers
• High and low octave overrides for the drone ison, with an octave arrow that places itself.
• Choose which internal note a Gorgon or Klasma applies to on compound neumes.
• Only one modifier per category can land on a neume.
Alignment
• Auto-align now covers fthoras, accidentals, compound neumes and complete modifier stacks.
• Modifiers centre on the real ink of each glyph, measured from the font.
• Printed and exported scores get their own alignment, tuned separately from the screen, and printing recovers cleanly if font loading stalls.
Sound and speed
• Clicks at pause and stop are gone; notes now release naturally.
• Updated instrument sound bank, with instrument names that match what plays.
• Large compositions scroll and edit noticeably faster.
Also: resizable keyboard panel, modifier search in the Library, a refreshed tutorial, and many right-to-left layout fixes.
