Ultimate Piper
Pipes: Tuner, Metronome, Music
Free · In‑App Purchases
Ask Siri to tune your pipes, start the metronome or play a tune. Scan any score, then play, practise and share with your band.
Ultimate Piper is the complete music app for bagpipers – whether you're learning on a practice chanter or performing with a full pipe band.
SCAN ANY SCORE
Point your camera at a printed bagpipe score — or import a PDF or photo — and Ultimate Piper reads it into a playable tune in seconds, notes, gracenotes and barlines included, all on-device. Several pages scan in one go.
JUST ASK SIRI
"Tune my pipes in Ultimate Piper." "Start the metronome at 84." "Play Scotland the Brave in Ultimate Piper." Siri can also start practice or scan a score. Your library is in Spotlight, and every command is a Shortcut.
COMPOSE & EDIT
Complete scores for light music and piobaireachd alike, with reactive grace notes and a full embellishment picker — doublings, grips, taorluaths and more. Triplets straight or with mixed values, played as notated. Select a range to transpose, re-time or copy between tunes. Add rests, 1st/2nd time bars, harmonies and colour-coded markup.
PLAY ALONG
Tracking follows your playing by microphone or MIDI chanter, scrolling the score — turn your iPhone sideways for a full-screen music stand — and colouring each note green or red. Connect a Blair Digital Chanter or Fagerström Technopipes for precise detection. Record a session and replay it, or analyse it for the gracenotes the tracker missed.
PRACTICE LOOP
Loop any range of bars, and let the tempo climb each time you nail it.
LISTEN & SHARE AUDIO
Play back any tune with realistic chanter or pipe sounds — or record your own instrument and hear every tune on it — timed with the idiom's own lilt, strathspey snap to piobaireachd's held close. Render any tune or set to a shareable audio recording — melody, harmonies and drones — to send to a pupil or bandmate.
TUNE UP
The tuner hears bass, tenors and chanter at once — a beat meter for the tenors, a per-note chanter grid, and drones tuned to your chanter, not a number. A guided tune-up takes the drones one at a time, with a needle for each tenor showing which way to move the slide. Four tuning schemes, GHB Standard to Seumas MacNeill. Also on Apple Watch. A Blowing mode draws twenty seconds of pitch for chanter and drones as steadiness lines, scored out of 100 — pitch follows pressure, so it reads your bag.
STANDALONE METRONOME
Authentic pipe band drum sounds — side, bass and tenor — tuned to your target Low A. Choose time signature, toggle accents and subdivisions, and tap to set tempo. Also on Apple Watch with haptic taps on every beat.
STRUCTURED PRACTICE
Reminders, session tracking, suggested warm-ups, and a rating for every tune from Want to Learn to Mastered.
VERSION HISTORY & COMPARE
Every edit is saved — browse your history, see colour-coded diffs, revert with a tap. Compare two tunes note by note and merge the best of both.
SHARE WITH YOUR BAND
Export to PDF, share tunes with other Ultimate Piper users, or send as .pipescore to the PipeScore web editor. Shared folders keep your whole band on the latest music, with control over who can edit. Write notes on a score for the band, or keep them private.
ORGANISE YOUR LIBRARY
Import BWW and PipeScore files. Organise tunes into nested folders. Search by title, composer, genre or time signature.
FOR EVERY PIPER
VoiceOver reaches every note in the editor and tells you where playback is. Resize the score without a pinch; Reduce Motion is honoured.
Works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.

more Hey, so this app is amazing. I also want to say thank you for labeling all of the buttons in the app. I utilize a tool in the Apple ecosystem called voiceover. However, I have limited vision, but can still read music. I wonder if it would be possible to add a feature where you could make the notes larger, or the space between the notes larger potentially?Honestly, if this app could do that and work as well as it does with everything else, I would probably delete a couple other apps I have access to.Another question for you while I’m here. Do you think it’s possible to import a PDF into this particular program and have it play the music out loud? I have tried other scanning apps and they can get the melody notes but not the embellishments. Maybe I missed it, if it’s a feature already Thanks again
Developer Response Thank you again for this review. It did more than you might think: it set off a full accessibility overhaul, and Ultimate Piper 3.2.0, out now, is the result. You can now make the score bigger or smaller without pinching. Open the ⋯ menu above a tune and use the Score Size rows, and VoiceOver can also adjust the size directly on the score. Every note in the editor can be reached, read and changed with VoiceOver, along with the embellishment wheel, the bar menu and the duration buttons. Playback tells you which bar it is on, icons that used to be read out by their symbol names now have proper names, and Reduce Motion is respected. And yes, you can import a PDF (or a photo, or scan with the camera): tap Import, choose "Import from PDF or image", and Ultimate Piper reads the embellishments as well as the melody notes, then plays the tune back. We'd love to hear how it works for you, and what would help next.

Ultimate Piper 3.2.0 — a score for every piper
ACCESSIBILITY
This release is about pipers who read the score with VoiceOver, a keyboard or less motion. Every note in the editor can now be reached, read and changed with VoiceOver, and so can the embellishment wheel, the bar menu and the duration buttons, with no gesture needed. Tunes and folders offer their own actions in the rotor. Playback tells you which bar it is on and lets you choose where it starts. Choose Bars sits beside "Tap a bar to select it". Icons that VoiceOver used to read by their symbol name now have real names, dialogs say what they are asking, and score imports report how they are getting on. On the Mac, buttons the keyboard used to skip can now be reached. Reduce Motion is honoured, and captions have been darkened to pass a contrast check.
SCORE SIZE WITHOUT A PINCH
The Share and View menu, under the circled ⋯ button, has Score Size rows beside Standard and Continuous, so the score can be made bigger or smaller with a tap, and VoiceOver can read the size.
SCROLL AND PINCH, PROPERLY
Every score view, including the editor, now scrolls in both directions and pinches smoothly, keeping your place as it zooms. On the Mac, a pinch grows around the pointer. A pinch in the Practice Loop stays inside the loop. Swipe-to-delete in the editor has been retired, because it fought the scroll.
THE WATCH
The Watch tuner prints the cents beside the needle, and stops without a long press.
PLAYBACK KEEPS PLAYING
Close a tune and it carries on playing in a small now-playing bar. Opening another tune, the tuner or the microphone stops it.
FOLLOW ALONG
Playback and Follow Along each get their own instrument in Settings. A colour legend explains what the note colours mean for your input, and new tips show you around the first time.
ENGRAVING
Sixteenth dance metres are beamed the way the books print them. A changed time signature gets room of its own, and a volta can run over it. The Practice Loop fits its first bar, and a custom time signature stays on the page at the foot of a tune.
THE MAC
The daily practice reminder has come to the Mac, and the Mac and iOS Settings now match.
FIXED
Restore Purchases no longer asks for a password first, and the subscription screen says when your plan ends. A PDF made on the iPhone is no longer cramped. The scanner reads pages that have a printed banner down one side.
3.2.0 Oct 1
Ultimate Piper 3.1.0 — share your markings with the band
SHARED ANNOTATIONS
A note you write on a score has always stayed on your own devices. Now, on a tune in a folder you share, the annotation editor carries a "Who Can See This" choice: Only Me, or Everyone With This Folder. A shared note carries a small two-person symbol, so you can tell which markings the band is reading and which are still your own. Notes are born private, and nothing is shared unless you say so. Settings has a new Sharing section where you can put your name to the notes you share.
A SHARED LIBRARY THAT ARRIVES WHOLE
A folder somebody shares with you now comes down complete, counting its tunes in as they land so you can see what is still to come. A share that is taken back tells you the moment it happens. A tune you delete stays deleted, an edit made offline survives, and a folder is no longer dropped because iCloud was slow to answer. If something goes wrong, Settings names it — and Force Full Sync is there for everyone now, fetching your library again, asking first.
PRACTICE: PAUSE, WARM-UPS, METRONOME
A practice session can be paused, and the time you spend stopped is kept out of the total. The warm-up list suggests tunes you have rated and not played lately, and you can add your own, which stay through a refresh. The metronome has come loose from its tab: it keeps ticking when you go elsewhere, it is reachable while a session runs, and starting a tune quietly takes the floor from it.
RESTS
A rest cuts the chanter for its written length while the drones carry on, the way they are written into modern band settings. Rests draw at every length, dotted or not, break a beam where they fall, and fall silent in harmony as well as melody. Follow-along skips them. In the editor, select a note and tap the rest button, and tap again to turn it back. Rests in Bagpipe Music Writer files come through when you open them.
MOVE A BARLINE BY POINTING
The scanner sometimes puts a barline a note out, and the only repair was deleting the note and adding it again in the next bar. Now press and hold a barline until it glows, then tap the gap where it belongs. The notes between move with it, and one undo puts it all back.
SCANNING PAGES WITH HARMONIES
Pages where melody and harmony are joined by a brace used to defeat the scanner, which read some staves and quietly skipped the rest. It reads them now, and knows what the brace means: the harmony arrives as a harmony on the same tune, not a second tune with no melody underneath. Harmony staves are drawn joined by a brace, as printed.
A PLAYBACK BAR THAT GETS OUT OF THE WAY
Auto-collapse Playback Bar now shrinks the bar whenever nothing is playing, not only mid-tune, and the pill it leaves tucks into the bottom corner instead of sitting over the lowest stave. Tap the chevron and the controls unfold leftward. Still off by default.
ALSO
Continuous mode draws section headings now, above the bar they belong to, so a ground and a first variation are told apart at a glance. A year of practice folds into months, the three most recent left open. And the recently practised and recently played lists remember how many rows you want, running two abreast where there is room.
FAMILY SHARING
Premium now covers up to five family members on one subscription.
FIXED
A bar carrying both a first and a second ending was measured by counting both times together, so a correct bar could wear a red under-line it had not earned. Notes and practice ticks on a tune somebody shared with you are kept instead of quietly thrown away, and a practice session iCloud refused is no longer lost. Sharing on the Mac opens Apple's own panel, so invitations arrive. Pause, play and stop on the practice timer are proper sized targets. Annotation markers land on the right stave at any zoom. Follow-along keeps listening when a session moves on. The editor hides the iPad sidebar again. And a name saved on one device no longer stops the app at launch.
3.1.0 Sep 22
Ultimate Piper 3.0.1 — the first polish after 3.0
SHARED FOLDERS STAY PUT
A shared folder no longer disappears on a wobble. If you are in someone's band folder, the app used to treat a momentary hiccup in iCloud's share status as the owner removing you: an Access Revoked alert, and the folder gone until the next sync brought it back. Now only an actual removal by the owner ends your access, and a folder has to be missing from two syncs in a row before the app hides it and says so. Your practice history and ratings for shared tunes were never touched either way.
A PROPER PAGE FOR THE STORY
About this tune has an editor of its own. Tap the story in the editor header on iPad, or in Tune Details on iPhone, and a full page opens at reading size, with room to write a paragraph and read it back. Done closes it; the story saves with the tune as before.
STAVE NUMBERS YOU CAN READ
Stave numbers were drawn at the score's own scale, which made them tiny on a phone. They now sit at a normal reading size and grow with your text size setting, with a little extra margin so they never touch the clef. Turn them on under Settings, Show Stave Numbers.
THE HALF BIRL
Sometimes birls are written as G, A, G, with no leading low A, and the editor now has a Half variant that represents this variant. BWW import keeps the file's choice too: brl becomes the half birl, abr the full one.
NEW IN 3.0, IF YOU MISSED IT
SIRI, SPOTLIGHT AND SHORTCUTS. "Tune my pipes in Ultimate Piper" opens the tuner. "Start the metronome at 84" starts it. "Play Scotland the Brave in Ultimate Piper" plays it with the score following. "Open", "Follow along with", "Scan sheet music", "Start a practice session", "Help me tune my drones" and "Stop the music" all work, cold or already open. Ask for "the strathspey from" a set. Your whole library is in Spotlight, and every command is a Shortcut.
STEADY BLOWING, MEASURED. Blowing mode in the tuner draws the last twenty seconds of pitch for chanter, tenors and bass as lines against time, scored out of 100. The same strip sits behind the wind button while you follow along. Pipes only.
A TUNE CAN TELL ITS STORY. About this tune folds under the genre line on the score, opens with a tap, and syncs, shares and exports with the tune.
PIOBAIREACHD, FINISHED PROPERLY. The tempo holds at the ground's through every variation, and the tune ends on a held low A against the drones. Convert to Piobaireachd Embellishments in the editor turns light-music throws and doublings into the idiom's movements.
ENGRAVING THAT MEASURES ITS INK. Bars are sized by the ink they hold, long gracenote runs tuck in behind the note before them, and triplets keep clear air in a squeezed stave. Grow Score to Page Width lets a narrow score use the room beside it.
ALSO IN 3.0. Play starts without freezing the page. Highland dances play in their idiom. Recording your own chanter and drones, and analysing a recorded session, are simply on. The tuner reads silence as silence. Opening a file already in your library asks whether to open your copy or import another.
3.0.1 Sep 12
Ultimate Piper 3.0.0 — just ask, and blow steady
SIRI, SPOTLIGHT AND SHORTCUTS
Ultimate Piper now listens. "Tune my pipes in Ultimate Piper" opens the tuner. "Start the metronome at 84" starts it at 84. "Play Scotland the Brave in Ultimate Piper" plays it with the score following. "Open", "Follow along with", "Scan sheet music", "Start a practice session", "Help me tune my drones" and "Stop the music" all work too, whether the app is cold or already open, from any screen. Ask for "the strathspey from" a set, or "the second tune in" one. If Siri mishears a title, the app offers the nearest tunes. Your whole library is in Spotlight: pull down, type a few letters, tap, and the tune opens. Every command is a Shortcut as well. On iOS 27, playing and opening a tune go through Siri's own music and open routes.
STEADY BLOWING, MEASURED
A new Blowing mode in the tuner draws the last twenty seconds of pitch for your chanter, tenors and bass as lines against time, with a steadiness score out of 100. Pitch follows pressure, so a wandering line is an unsteady bag. The same strip is a tap away while you follow along with a tune, from the wind button in the playing bar. Pipes only: a practice chanter's pitch follows the reed and your mouth, not the bag.
A TUNE CAN TELL ITS STORY
Every tune can carry its back-story. Edit a tune and there is an About this tune field beside the genre and composer; on the score it folds under that line, opens with a tap, and tucks itself away when you press play. The story lives inside the tune, so it syncs, shares, exports and versions with it.
PIOBAIREACHD, FINISHED PROPERLY
The tempo holds at the ground's through every variation instead of creeping up, so the crunluath keeps its fingers. A piobaireachd ends as a piper ends it: the final note settles onto a held low A against the drones before everything stops together. In the editor, Convert to Piobaireachd Embellishments turns light-music throws and doublings into the movements the idiom writes, and the scanner applies the same rule as it reads. Any spelling of Ceòl Mór counts as piobaireachd.
ENGRAVING THAT MEASURES ITS INK
Bars are sized by the ink they hold, so a crunluath variation no longer stretches the whole tune to three times its natural width. Long gracenote runs tuck in behind the note before them, and triplets keep clear air on both sides even in a squeezed stave. Grow Score to Page Width, under Settings and Display, lets a narrow score grow into the room beside it. It never shrinks one.
PLAY WITHOUT A PAUSE
Pressing play no longer freezes the page while the tune is prepared. Highland dances play in their proper idiom: the Fling, Sword Dance and Seann Triubhas as strathspeys, the Reel of Tulloch as a reel, the Scottish Lilt as a jig. Hornpipes default to 90.
YOUR OWN SOUND, FOR REAL
Recording your own chanter and drones, and analysing a recorded session for the gracenotes the live tracker missed, are no longer experiments. They are simply on.
THE TUNER TELLS THE TRUTH
Silence reads as silence: room noise no longer conjures a bass drone or chanter notes, and a stopped chanter no longer invents a low A. Every tuner mode fits the phone without scrolling, with the scheme and target low A behind the summary line.
ALSO
Opening a file already in your library asks whether to open your copy or import another. Harmony staves edit properly, note by note. First and second endings no longer leave the beat-count line behind. A narrow Split View pane on iPad gets the phone layout and grows back when widened. Plus fixes to triplets, voltas and two crashes.
3.0.0 Sep 11
Ultimate Piper 2.6.0 — played by ear
PLAYBACK AS PIPERS PLAY IT
Glissandos now scoop like a finger leaving the hole: the pitch leaves the first note fast and leans into the second over about a semiquaver, measured from Peter Crowe's recording of The Pumpkin's Fancy, instead of a quick blend between two fixed pitches. Notes run into one another with no dead air, as a chanter must. Grips land with the theme note on the beat, taorluaths stay crisp at speed, and 4/4 marches without a saved tempo default to a marching 88.
PIOBAIREACHD, FROM THE MASTERS' RECORDINGS
Measured against two recordings of Lament for the Children. Piobaireachd now defaults to 40 BPM. The heavy throw holds its low G, the cadential E dwells half a beat and re-attacks after the same note, the note before a cadence leans, and echo beats dwell on their last gracenote. With Expressive Timing on, the variations quicken as the tune unfolds — taorluath, crunluath and crunluath doubling each faster than the last — the note after a taorluath is clipped, and the crotchet that closes a bar is leaned on. Settings → Expressive Timing → Genre Strategies explains every rule.
ENGRAVING THAT FOLLOWS THE HAND
Low-hand embellishments hang their beam just above the stave on short stems, as the engravers set them. The scanner no longer reads 3/4 marches as 6/8, and "Retreat" is a recognised tune type.
FASTER, STEADIER
Much faster cold start on big libraries, and the score cursor stays with the audio to the last note of the longest piobaireachd. Keep the screen awake while you browse the library (Settings → Display). Move a folder into another folder. Paste copied staves as harmony voices.
TRY IT: YOUR OWN CHANTER'S VOICE
An experimental feature for the curious: turn on Settings → Sample Packs → Record Your Own Sound, play a steady low A to calibrate, record each note, and every tune plays back with your instrument — tuned onto the scale from your own low A. We'd love to hear how it works for you.
2.6.0 Sep 1
Ultimate Piper 2.5.0 — triplets learn new rhythms
TRIPLETS, PROPERLY NOTATED
Triplets no longer have to be three equal notes. Write a crotchet-quaver triplet — or any mix of values — and it displays and plays exactly as notated. Make, edit and break rhythmicised triplets right in the editor. Triplet engraving got a thorough tidy too: consistent spacing with or without gracenotes, brackets that reach the last notehead, and a triplet at the start of a bar now stays inside its bar.
PLAYBACK THAT KNOWS ITS IDIOM
Strathspey triplets now play with the traditional short-short-long lilt, and the half D throw joins the embellishment menu. Reels and hornpipes without a saved tempo now default to a proper playing speed — reels at 80 minims, hornpipes at 100 crotchets — instead of a practice crawl. Any tune where you've set your own tempo is untouched.
ALSO IN THIS RELEASE
Move several tunes into a folder in one go from the library's + menu. Importing a multi-tune file now reveals the tunes only once every one is saved. Plus reliability fixes for large libraries: proficiency levels and practice history now always load in full, and a tune that showed "Score data unavailable" on one device now loads properly everywhere.
2.5.0 Aug 15
Ultimate Piper 2.4.0 — the tuner comes to your wrist, comparing tunes grows up, and every tune gets its own dials
THE POLYPHONIC TUNER, ON YOUR WRIST
The tuner that hears the whole instrument at once — bass drone, both tenors and chanter together — now lives on Apple Watch. A gauge for each drone in the order they stand on your shoulder, a beat-rate readout that shows the tenors pulling into unison (tune until it reads zero), and a chanter line that names the note you're sounding with its offset in cents. Stop the middle tenor to set bass and outer first.
TUNE TO YOUR CHANTER
The tuner works two ways: against the target frequency set in the tuner on your iPhone, or against your own chanter. Sound your Low A steadily for a few seconds and a Tune to Chanter button appears — tap it, and from then on every gauge judges the drones against where your chanter actually sits. The captured pitch shows as a green chip, survives wrist-down, and a tap clears it back to your target.
COMPARING TUNES, GROWN UP
Compare two versions of a tune and the differences now line up properly: harmony voices match against their counterparts, deleted bars appear in their rightful place, and a legend spells out what the colours mean. When two embellishments write the same gracenotes but mean different things — a doubling versus a half-doubling — the diff names them beneath the stave. Bars and staves are numbered so you can talk about "bar 12" with a friend, and when two tunes are identical it says so plainly instead of leaving you staring at clean staves.
EVERY TUNE GETS ITS OWN DIALS
The score's tools pill slides out into a per-tune control bar: set expressive timing (Auto, On or Off) and harmony visibility for each tune individually — for the modern jig that wants playing dead straight, or the tune whose harmony is just noise today. Your choices sync across your devices, and the global settings still set the default.
EMBELLISHMENTS THAT PLAY LIKE FINGERS
When an embellishment doesn't fit its melody note, it no longer gets crushed into a buzz. It compresses gently down to real finger speed and leans across the beat — the way actual fingers do. Birls on short hornpipe notes are the place to hear it; piobaireachd cadences still breathe. And hornpipes without a saved tempo now play at a proper 90 instead of half speed.
THE SCANNER LEARNED SOME MANNERS
A dedication line printed between a tune's title and its first stave no longer conjures a ghost stave, and neither does the photographed page's edge. Boxed volta labels like "2nd TIME 2nd PART" are no longer mistaken for tune titles, so a nine-stave march arrives as one tune instead of three. Composer detection no longer mistakes a bare page number for a name, and scanning several tunes at once can no longer lose a freshly created tune to a sync race.
A LIBRARY THAT SHOWS YOU WHERE
Open a tune from Recently Played, search, or a fresh scan and the Library reveals it — the folder chain expands and the list scrolls to the tune. It also refreshes itself once a minute, so tunes from your other devices appear on their own.
FOR THE EDITOR
The volta tool now works in pairs the way pipers do: place a 1st-time ending and the tool stays armed, so the very next two taps define the 2nd. Mid-stave barlines can cycle through double, end-repeat and start-repeat with a tap.
AN HONEST RED LINE
The bar-length warning learned a piece of engraving lore: a tune's closing bar is meant to finish short by exactly its opening pickup — the repeat completes the bar — so that honest short bar is no longer flagged. A genuinely wrong-length bar still is.
FIXES
• Replaying a recorded follow-along session now tracks smoothly at note resolution, with the same colours you saw live.
• A second ending printed as its own shared line ("2. of 2nd part") now plays on the repeat.
• Various fixes to playback, scanning, and sync throughout.
2.4.0 Aug 6
Ultimate Piper 2.3.0 — a faster, better scanner, staves that travel, and a count-in
THE SCANNER WENT BACK TO SCHOOL
The reading model has been retrained on real pages that pipers scanned and corrected — and it shows. Notes and bars come through more accurately, triplets that used to arrive as plain quavers now keep their little 3, and the scanner no longer invents first- and second-time brackets that aren't on the page. It has also learned the rest of the embellishment vocabulary: thumb and half variants, double and triple strikes, the dili, the chelalho, and double-dotted rhythms all come through by name now.
And it's fast now. The reading engine remembers its work instead of redoing it for every note, so a full page that used to take minutes lands in under half a minute on recent iPhones — same accuracy, note for note, just without the wait.
TITLES FROM THE MARGINS
Some books print the tune's name, type and composer beside the music instead of above it. Scans of those pages used to arrive nameless — now the scanner reads the margins too, and attribution lines like "Trad. Arr." land in the composer field instead of masquerading as titles.
COPY A WHOLE STAVE
The editor's stave menu can now copy an entire stave — notes, harmonies, time signatures, section heading — and paste it above or below any other stave: in the same tune, another tune in the set, or a different tune entirely. Move Staff Up and Down reorder parts without retyping a note. First- and second-time brackets contained within the stave travel with it; only brackets spanning multiple staves need recreating.
A COUNT-IN BEFORE YOU PLAY
Press play and get a three beat countdown before the tune starts — time to get the chanter up and your fingers set. On by default during practice sessions, switchable to always or off in Settings, and it ticks audibly when the metronome is on.
RECENTLY PLAYED
The library dashboard now keeps a Recently Played list beside Recently Practised — press play on any tune and it files itself at the top.
MUTE THE PART YOU'RE PLAYING
Practice Chanter playback can now mute individual parts: silence the melody and play it yourself over the harmonies, or mute a harmony line and supply your own. Your selection sticks between plays.
SHARES WITHOUT THE WAIT
Accepting a shared folder is now instant — the sheet closes straight away and a progress row sits in your library until the folder arrives from iCloud. Large shares can genuinely take a few minutes; now you can keep playing while they do.
FOR THE PIOBAIREACHD-MINDED
The edred — the anchored edre from the a-mach movements — joins the embellishment wheel's edre family on E, shown as Edreb, Edrec and Edred to match its anchor. BWW imports honour those anchor suffixes too.
FIXES
• Very long tunes with a harmony voice could show a completely blank score — the score now draws in slices and renders reliably at any length.
• The tuner no longer mistakes a Low A for a High A when the chanter's second harmonic outshouts its fundamental.
• Volta brackets now keep their place when staves are inserted or deleted around them, and undo after deleting a stave restores them to the right staves.
• A triplet's last note no longer collides with the next note's gracenotes.
• Library scrolling stays smooth while iCloud syncs, and tunes save to the offline cache in the background.
2.3.0 Aug 1
Ultimate Piper 2.2.1 — guided tenor tuning
TUNE YOUR TENORS ONE AT A TIME, WITH DIRECTIONS
The tuner can now walk you through the drones. Tap "Guided tune-up": stop your middle tenor and tune the outside one against the bass on its own gauge. Then start the middle tenor — the tuner catches the new voice the moment it speaks, and from then on each tenor has its own needle, showing which way to move the slide rather than just how fast the beat is. Drive them together until it reads "Tenors locked in". If the tuner ever loses track of which drone is which, it says so and starts over — it never guesses.
THE DILI, BY NAME
The High A throw joins the piobaireachd wheel as itself — the dili — rather than travelling under the doubling's name. Imported BWW files that use it now name it properly too.
CUT-TIME TEMPOS, THE WAY PIPERS COUNT THEM
Reels and other cut-time tunes now show their tempo at the minim — the two beats to the bar you actually tap — instead of a doubled crotchet count. A reel you had at 170 now reads 85: the exact same speed, written the way pipers say it, and the editor labels the field "BPM (minims)" so there's no doubt. Playback doesn't change a thing.
FIXES
• Harmonies stay in step: a series of playback timing fixes means harmony lines no longer drift against the melody over a long set, voices start in perfect sync, and replays sound identical to the first play.
• Harmony lines now follow first- and second-time endings correctly, and no longer quietly double the melody through parts where no harmony is written.
• Exported audio now matches exactly what you hear in the app.
• Long-pressing a notehead at smaller zoom sizes reliably opens the embellishment wheel again — the touch target no longer shrinks with the score, and a press between two close notes goes to the nearer one.
2.2.1 Jul 21
Ultimate Piper 2.2 — a tuner that hears the whole instrument, and a sharper editor
TUNE THE WHOLE INSTRUMENT AT ONCE
The new tuner listens to your bass drone, tenor drones and chanter together — no more tuning one thing at a time. A beat meter shows the tenors pulling into unison, and a tip walks the traditional tune-up order: bass and outside tenor first, middle tenor corked, then open it and null the beat. The chanter grid only registers notes you actually hold — play a slow scale under full drones and every bar fills, Low G included, with no phantom readings when the chanter is silent. Four tuning schemes are built in, from GHB Standard to Seumas MacNeill's 1954 study.
A SMARTER EMBELLISHMENT WHEEL
• The wheel now holds the movements pipers reach for every day — Doubling, Strike, Throw, Birl, Grip, Taorluath, Shake — and when one has other forms (half, thumb, double), curved segments appear around the wheel to choose from. No choice, no clutter.
• Movements are named the way a piper would say them: Dre, Edre, Dare, Vedare, Embari, Chedari — even the rare chelalho — and on Low A a double strike is simply called what it is: a birl.
• In Piobaireachd mode the six cadences share a single segment.
THE FULL EMBELLISHMENT VOCABULARY
Imported BWW files keep every thumb, half, double and triple movement exactly as written — thumb doublings, half shakes, double strikes, fermata cadences and all — instead of quietly downgrading them to their plain forms.
EDITOR IMPROVEMENTS
• Custom time signatures: the time-signature wheel gains a Custom… entry for anything its rings don't list, and the scanner reads unusual meters like 21/8 straight from the page.
• Pasting a run of notes into another bar keeps them together, exactly where you click.
• 1st/2nd-ending brackets sit precisely over the notes they belong to — including endings over a single note.
• C flat and F flat are supported for the tunes that ask for them.
• The note controls keep working while the embellishment wheel is open, at any zoom.
SCANNING
Very densely written staves — heavy gracenote writing — now import in full instead of arriving as empty bars, and scanned 6/4 marches stay in 6/4.
LITTLE EXTRAS
• Compare two settings of the same tune note by note — differences highlighted on one score, with each tune's folder shown so you know which is which.
• Merge duplicates: keep the score you prefer and the other's practice history, recordings and annotations move across before it goes. If anything can't sync, nothing is deleted.
• A freshly scanned tune appears in your library immediately, and long editing sessions save rock-solid.
• Piobaireachd movements play more faithfully, with cadences given their proper breath.

Ultimate Piper 2.1 — scan from the camera, build tunes faster, and find your way around
POINT YOUR CAMERA AT THE PAGE
Open a printed bagpipe tune straight from your camera — no scanner needed. Ultimate Piper finds the edges, straightens the page, and reads several pages in one go, even stitching a tune that runs across a page turn back into one. Works from a PDF or photo too. Numbered tunes keep their numbers and book headers no longer get mistaken for the tune name.
BUILD AND EDIT TUNES FASTER
• Copy notes and whole bars from one tune and paste them into another — your clipboard travels between tunes for the whole session.
• Double-dotted notes are now supported: tap the +/– control to change a note's length as before, and hold it to add or remove a dot.
• Build custom embellishments by hand — enter a run of gracenotes for the figures that don't match a standard movement, with a live preview as you go.
• Add a fermata (pause) to a note, with ties, slides and accidentals gathered into a cleaner note toolbar.
• Tune titles, genres and composers capitalise each word as you type.
A MUSIC STAND IN YOUR POCKET
Turn an iPhone sideways in continuous view and the score fills the screen, the controls tuck away while you play, and a floating switcher keeps Play and Follow Along to hand. The scrolling score glides along at the music's own pace.
DISCOVER EVERYTHING IT CAN DO
Tap the sparkles in the Library to tour every feature — each card explains it and takes you straight there — plus gentle, well-paced tips that appear where features live and a guided walkthrough the first time you edit a tune.
PRACTICE THAT BEHAVES
• Tick a tune off your practice list straight from the score — the Practiced button and the session list now stay in step.
• Tapped "End Practice" too soon? "Keep Practising" lets you carry on; nothing's saved until you're done.
• The setup wizard remembers the instrument you used last time.
• The screen stays awake throughout a practice session and during Follow Along.
EVERYTHING IN SYNC
Add or scan a tune on your iPhone or iPad and it now appears on your Mac by itself — no manual refresh.
PLAYS THE WAY IT'S WRITTEN
• Multi-part marches with 1st/2nd endings now repeat from the right place, every part.
• Piobaireachd cadences are held more expressively.
• Correctly beamed second-timing brackets and tidier note spacing across staves.
• Switch the playback instrument while paused and it picks up from the same spot.
POLISH
• Your library sorts numbered tunes and folders properly (1, 2, 3 … 10, not 1, 10, 2).
• Renaming a tune updates everywhere straight away.
• Optional stave numbering to label each line of the score (Settings).
• Cleaner score menus, selectable 1st/2nd-ending brackets in the editor, and many scanning and layout fixes.
Free libraries now hold 15 tunes.

Ultimate Piper 2.0 — Turn any bagpipe score into a playable tune
Ultimate Piper now reads sheet music. Import a PDF or a photo of any bagpipe score and the app turns it into a playable tune in seconds — every note, gracenote and barline picked out automatically. It all happens on-device, so there's no internet round-trip and no waiting on a server.
What else is new
• Share a tune or set as audio. Render any tune or set to a sharable audio recording straight from the Share menu — as Bagpipes or Practice Chanter — to send to a pupil or a bandmate. Everything you'd hear on playback is in there: melody, harmonies and drones.
• Faster iCloud sync. Your library now syncs by fetching only what's changed instead of reloading everything each launch, so it stays quick as your collection grows, and shared tunes and folders appear faster.
• Shared folders bring their subfolders. Share a folder and the people you share with now see its nested folders and tunes, not just the top level. A new Mark All as Seen action clears a shared folder's update badges (and its subfolders') in one tap.
• Follow-along now tracks the harmony part you choose. Harmony players finally get useful note feedback instead of every note reading as a miss, and detected-note colours (green for the notes you nail, red for the ones you miss) now show by default — toggle them any time under Settings → Detected Note Colours.
• Expressive Timing got a lot smarter. Hornpipes have a lighter swing, jigs have a long-short-short lilt, strathspeys snap on dotted-cut figures, and marches get a touch of round-cut. Toggle the whole thing on or off under Settings → Expressive Timing (the per-genre breakdown lives in the Genre Strategies section below it).
• Multi-note selection in the tune editor — select a range of notes and transpose them up or down, lengthen or shorten their duration, cut, copy, paste, or delete the whole batch in one go, with a single undo for the lot.
• Beat-aware beam grouping in cut-time (2/2), so reels and hornpipes group by minim like they should.
• Cut-time tempo display now matches what you hear — reels and hornpipes used to show one number and play at twice the audible pace; the BPM on screen now equals the crotchet-rate your ear expects.
• A smoother scrolling score view. The playback cursor follows the music natively — through repeats and triplet-heavy tunes like strathspeys it stays put on screen instead of drifting off — pressing play scrolls to the start (or the note you tapped) first, and the note spacing and cut-time beaming now match the paged view.
• Library Dashboard with side-by-side proficiency rings.
• Search now does multi-token matching (AND), and results show the folder path for each tune.
Bug fixes
• Playback no longer stops when the screen sleeps.
• The tune editor stays in Make Triplet mode after you create a triplet, and triplet warnings now appear on Mac.
• Tap a note to start playback from there and it now begins exactly on the note you tapped — even deep into a long set with triplets — and the last note of a tune is no longer clipped.
• The lock screen and Now Playing controls update the tune title as a set moves from one tune to the next, and now show each tune's type in brackets — e.g. "Scotland the Brave (March)".
• The note-editing wheel now opens centred on the note you tapped and is never clipped at the edge of the score, and its Standard/Piobaireachd switch is a clear inline toggle.
• Harmony lines stay in time all the way through a set, including the later tunes.
• Editing a tune and saving keeps the tune open instead of bouncing you back, and a sync arriving in the background no longer interrupts an edit or playback you're in the middle of.
• Triplets sitting at the end of a stave no longer spill past the barline.
• More reliable iCloud sync, with a Force Full Sync option under Settings if a device ever drifts out of step.
