Photos keep piling up on my phone, and I do not really want to delete them. Compressing them is one possible answer.
I have always wanted a handy photo compression tool.
- It should be simple enough to use
- It should show each photo’s file size and format directly, without making me open it first
- It should compress photos locally on the phone, without network access or uploads
- Its compression strategy should be safe and conservative, preserving the original visual quality as much as possible. Metadata such as capture date, camera, and location should not be lost, and ideally the photo should stay in its original album
I looked around and did not find what I wanted, so I decided to vibe code one myself. That is how Potoo came to be.
The core idea is simple: create a compressed copy, then delete the original. But while making it, I kept rethinking and rebuilding it again and again. Even the app name changed four times.
I was afraid it would become too broad, too heavy, too eager to please, and drift away from the reason I started building it.
If you have run into the same pain point, I think you may also like my second app, Potoo.
It is not perfect yet, but it will keep evolving while staying small and focused.
By the way, Potoo is a paid app. I see that as a fair return for the time and creativity I put into it. I dislike subscriptions myself, so Potoo only offers a one-time purchase, and I believe the price is very reasonable.
