Eter Encrypted
Messages that dissipate
Only for iPhone
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS.
Real privacy, no compromises. End-to-end encryption, messages that never touch your disk, and a vault that only opens with mutual consent.
Eter is a messenger built for people who take privacy seriously. Every detail is designed to minimize traces and protect your conversations against extraction — even in advanced forensic scenarios.
END-TO-END ENCRYPTION
All messages are protected by the Signal Protocol with Double Ratchet. Your conversations are encrypted before leaving the device and can only be read by the intended recipient.
ZERO ON-DEVICE STORAGE
Unlike other messengers, Eter never writes messages to disk. Content lives only in protected memory and is wiped when you leave the app. No local files, no database, no backups.
THE VAULT
After 24 hours, your messages are locked in a cryptographic vault. Reopening requires mutual consent — both parties must agree. Real control over what can exist.
ANTI-FORENSIC PROTECTION
Screenshot blocking, aggressive RAM cleanup with native SecureBuffer, content-free notifications, and automatic wipe in risk scenarios. Designed to minimize residual traces.
ENCRYPTED CALLS
Voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption. Group calls via SFU supporting up to 50 participants with adaptive quality.
PRIVATE CIRCLES
Groups with controlled access, social graph protection via HMAC tokens, and the same privacy guarantees as individual conversations.
PRIVACY BY DESIGN
No phone number or email required — just a username and password. No feeds, no data collection, no dark patterns. The app serves you, never the other way around.
FAMILIAR INTERFACE
Intuitive navigation you already know. Same ease of use, with the depth of security you deserve.
Eter doesn't promise the impossible. It promises to drastically reduce risk — by design.
more Editing a message.
• Editing a message took a few seconds for the new text to appear, and nothing on screen said the edit was on its way — the bubble kept the old text, so the natural assumption was that the tap had not registered, and you edited again. The new text now appears the moment you confirm. If the edit never reaches the server, the previous text comes back and the error notice appears.

Opening a group.
• A group could load forever. When you open a group conversation, the app waits for the server to say who sent each message — and that wait had no deadline at all. A single reply that never arrived left the screen spinning until you closed and reopened the app. The wait is now bounded: once the deadline passes the conversation opens anyway, and the app records what stalled, so the cause shows up instead of vanishing.
• The group key request was being refused in silence. Whoever joins a group after the others asks for the key from someone already inside. That request was missing a field the server requires, and was refused without anyone knowing: the person who asked was left with an unnamed group and locked older messages, with no warning on screen, and the key holder never learned that anyone had asked. The request now reaches its destination.

Answering with the device locked.
• The app was ending the very call it had just answered. When you answer, the call stops being "ringing" — and the app, on noticing that, dismissed the incoming-call alert on every device, including the one that answered. On iPhone, dismissing that alert ends the call. That was the "ended" message on your screen.
• Your vault stays locked. Protected conversations and the emergency PIN still require unlocking the device, as before.
0.17.60 Aug 15
The app no longer gets stuck on "loading".
• Your conversations come back on their own. When the app started on a poor connection, one read failed silently and the conversation list — and the contact list — spun forever, even after the network returned. The only way out was to close and reopen the app. It now retries by itself and reloads what it missed when you return to it. If it still fails, you see the error and can pull to refresh.
• No more confusing contact invites. When the other person had already invited you, the app said "Request sent" and nothing happened. It now tells you an invitation is waiting for you to accept.
• Answering with the iPhone locked. Calls dropped a few seconds after you answered. With the device locked, hardware protection refused to open your account keys and the app wrongly concluded it had none. Calls now hold.
• Your vault stays locked. Protected conversations and the emergency PIN still require unlocking the device, as before.

Share your screen on Mac.
• During a call, Mac can now share your whole screen or just one window. The other person sees your screen and your face at the same time, side by side — the camera keeps running.
The first time, macOS asks for screen recording permission. Nothing is captured before you pick what to share.

Fixes and stability:
• More resilient login on unstable networks, with clear messages and a safe retry.
• Voice calls correctly use the vehicle’s Bluetooth connection when available.
• Contact names load without exposing the UID.
• On Mac, dragging an image no longer leaves a duplicate copy stuck on “loading.”
• General stability and security improvements.

Speed and trust:
• Photos and files appear in the conversation the moment you send them, with real progress.
• Videos and PDFs are read inside the app, served from memory — never written to disk.
• Photo gallery with zoom, and automatic resend once you are back online.
• Bond Seal: verify a contact once; if their identity ever changes, the seal breaks and tells you.
• Three words on a call confirm it is really them, live.
• Calls connect faster and hold steadier.
Encryption and privacy remain unchanged.

More from your calls:
• Switching from voice to video mid-call now works end to end. The other side gets an invitation and chooses whether to turn on their camera.
• When a call ends, you can rate its quality with stars — one tap, nothing more.
Encryption and privacy remain unchanged.

Messages open faster:
• Opening a conversation now decrypts messages in a fraction of the time — we removed unnecessary server round-trips, one per message.
• Returning to a conversation you already visited is instant: what was decrypted stays available, in memory only, while the app is open.
• While a message is being decrypted, the app says exactly that again: "Decrypting…".
Conversations, calls, and encryption are unchanged.
0.17.33 Jul 11
Stability and calling fixes:
• Incoming calls no longer close the app when it was fully quit.
• Tapping a conversation always opens it.
• During audio calls, a shortcut back to the call — and to hang up — stays within reach as you move around the app.
Conversations, calls, and encryption are unchanged.
0.17.30 Jul 10
Faster, from tap to conversation:
• Instant launch: the app opens immediately, with a refined vault unlock ritual.
• Lighter chats: smooth scrolling and photo previews that appear instantly, even in long conversations.
• Eter for Mac (internal beta): send messages and take calls on your linked Mac. For now, enabled test accounts only.
For everyone else, everything remains as it should be — private, ephemeral, yours.

More reliable internal diagnostics (v0.16.75):
• Internal plumbing fixes so that our iPhone-side automatic crash reporting reaches our team again. No
user-visible change — this just helps us fix bugs faster in upcoming releases.
Dialing tone stops when the other person answers (v0.16.74):
• Fixed a small leftover from v0.16.71: on calls started straight from the chat screen's call button, the
ringback (dialing tone) could keep playing for you even after the other side answered and started
speaking. It now stops the exact moment the call connects.
Calls connect again when you answer (v0.16.73):
• On some iPhones, tapping "answer" dropped the call immediately with an error. Fixed an internal
initialization order issue that was discarding the audio/video already prepared in the background. Calls
connect normally again after answering.
Call cancel and answer, without traces (v0.16.72):
• Cancelling a call before the other side picks up silences the callee's iPhone immediately, instead of
waiting for iOS to give up on its own (which used to take up to 30 seconds).
• iPhones stop showing persistent "missed call" banners after calls that ended before they could connect.
• Internal stability of in-call diagnostic logs.
• Text copied from other apps stops being wiped when you close Eter — only what you copy FROM INSIDE Eter
is cleared automatically.
0.16.75 Jun 12
This week's update: your app lock timeout is yours to choose. 1 hour, 4 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, or
never. And group video calls now use half the data, with no visible difference on a phone screen.
Available on TestFlight.
0.16.70 Jun 10
Locked-screen message notifications now show the sender's name. The server still doesn't see who messaged you — the name is resolved locally on your device.
Message timestamp slots onto the last line of the bubble, WhatsApp-style. Tighter chat bubbles without losing any information.
Calls rebuilt from the inside. Fixed crashes on answer, "phantom" calls appearing in the opposite direction, failures on consecutive calls, and the ringback that kept playing after the other side picked up. They flow now.
0.16.66 Jun 2
Calls and messages now display the contact's name even when your iPhone is locked or the app is closed previously they showed only "Eter". Privacy stays intact: Apple still sees no information about who is talking to whom, and message content remains end-to-end encrypted. The name is resolved locally on your device, for your eyes only.
0.16.60 May 29
This build bundles call-related fixes and improvements since 0.16.49.
Calls — audio and ringback
• The ringback tone now stops the moment the other side picks up — it no longer keeps playing over the callee's voice.
• If you cancel before the callee picks up, the ringback tone goes silent on your side immediately (it used to linger sometimes).
• Ringback still plays even with the iPhone in silent mode (matches WhatsApp / Telegram).
Calls — stability
• Critical fix: calls were being ended at the exact moment the other side answered. Fixed.
• When someone is calling you at the same time you're trying to call the same person, the app blocks the outgoing attempt and asks you to answer or
decline the incoming call first.
• When you cancel before the callee picks up, their iPhone stops ringing immediately (used to wait for the iOS system timeout).
• A call that already ended no longer shows as "active" when you reopen the app.
Calls — notifications
• Answered calls no longer log as "Missed Call" in iOS Recents — the persistent banner on the lock screen and Notification Center clears after a normal
call end.
• Tapping a stale call banner for a call that already ended (lock screen / Notification Center) no longer opens a "phantom call" — it just opens the
app.
Navigation
• Backing out of a chat no longer requires two taps when you opened the conversation by tapping a message notification on the lock screen.
Under the hood
• Faster call connect time via iOS cryptographic pre-warm (since 0.16.49).
• New internal anonymous telemetry helps diagnose call latency bottlenecks.
0.16.54 May 26
Calls connect faster and ringback plays in silent mode (v0.16.49):
• iOS call pre-warm reduces time between tapping "Answer" and hearing audio. When the call push arrives, the app already gets a head start on the cryptographic setup in the background.
• Ringback now plays even with the iPhone in silent mode, matching WhatsApp and Telegram.
• New anonymous internal telemetry (no PII beyond UIDs) helps diagnose call latency bottlenecks.
Critical fix in seed-phrase account recovery (v0.16.44):
• Messages no longer silently "evaporate" after recovering an account via 12 words. The Signal registrationId is now preserved during recovery, keeping existing cryptographic sessions with your contacts intact.
• Fixed a bug where contact names appeared as UIDs in the friends list.
0.16.49 May 22
• Quiet inside the open chat — no chime when you're already reading.
• Stronger privacy: offline cache off, private contact discovery, multi-custody identity keys.
• Registration Lock — optional PIN as an extra sign-in layer.
• Fixes: message typography, phantom conversations after registration, clearer error messages.
0.16.42 Apr 29
More reliable friendships and sign-in (v0.16.20):
• Friend requests now appear instantly in your pending list. Before, sending a request right after registering a new account on a device that had
previously held another account required closing and reopening the app — no longer.
• A friend's name shows up correctly the moment a friendship is accepted. The bug that displayed a newly added friend as a technical ID has been
fixed at its root.
• Legacy accounts self-heal on sign-in. Users who were stuck in a sign-in/sign-out loop due to security-rule updates can now use the app normally on
the next login — no account recovery needed.
• Better visibility to fix silent failures. Bugs that previously went unnoticed now leave a private trace that lets us resolve issues without asking
you to reproduce the scenario.

Editing a message.
