See which drum rushes and which lags: every pad gets its own color and its own timing stats. Chain bars into sequences, and set a goal tempo to climb to.
The metronome that listens back.
Metronome Hero is a free rhythm training app for musicians. Play your instrument, tap the screen, or connect MIDI — and see exactly whether you’re early, late, or right on the beat.
All core features are free, including scoring, adaptive tempo, MIDI input, challenges, Band Sync, and session summaries. An optional one-time purchase unlocks the practice calendar with iCloud sync so you can track your progress over time.
REAL-TIME TIMING FEEDBACK
See your notes in six live visualizations: Note Highway, Playhead, Circular, Tube, Spiral, and Scrolling History.
PLAY ANY WAY
Use tap input, microphone detection with automatic gain, or MIDI with latency calibration.
TRAIN SMARTER
Adaptive Tempo increases BPM when accuracy improves and backs off when consistency drops.
BUILD INTERNAL TIME
Practice with click dropouts, backbeat-only modes, random mute cycling, subdivisions, and multiple difficulty levels.
PRACTICE TOGETHER
Band Sync lets groups share the same pulse, compare timing, and improve ensemble groove in real time.
KEEP IT MUSICAL
Choose from drum sounds, instrument voices, scales, chords, and arpeggios.
WORKS WITH YOUR SETUP
Supports Ableton Link, AUv3 hosts, and iCloud sync across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
Review streaks, scoring, timing distribution, and tempo changes after every session.
Metronome Hero is more than a metronome. It’s a rhythm training system for musicians who want stronger groove, better accuracy, and more confidence.

UPDATED TO 5 STAR: So long and thanks for the fish.
ReddWolf
Updated review as my concerns no longer exist. Subscription model has been removed by the developer based on feedback. Thank you for listening and responding!! Original post: Sadly, another great developer who is normally an insta-buy for me has now been corrupted by the subscription model. Did give it 2 stars because it looks like it is another solid product as usual, just sad to see another loss to the sub drain.
Developer Response
I hear you — I’m not a fan of subscription overload either.I actually changed the model based on feedback. The app is now free to use with all core features unlocked. The only paid option is a one-time purchase if you want to keep a long-term history of your practice sessions.I really appreciate you giving it a try and the kind words about the product itself.
More usability from the app now
lofidelityrockr
There is now a better user experience with the app now that the metronome is not buried behind a mandatory subscription service. Too bad other app makers don’t get that. Good on AudioKit for keeping all of their customers in mind.
Developer Response
I understand where you’re coming from, and I appreciate you taking the time to write this out.The app is no longer subscription based. All core features are free to use with no time limit. The only paid option is a one-time purchase if you want to keep a long-term history of your practice sessions. Also, it’s not just tapping. You can play any instrument into the app, including drums, piano, or guitar, and it shows your timing in real time.If you’re open to it, I’d encourage you to give it another look.
We Got the Beat!

Finally, there’s a metronome app that makes practice fun! I love the visuals and the way that the beats can drop out and vary in speed. It forces me to pay attention and keep my rhythmic chops up! way to go!

Engaging App. Addictive. A Must-Have for Musicians of All Levels!
Color by Note
- Every pad, drum, or string now gets its own color, so you can see at a glance which one rushes and which one drags
- A per-note table shows count, early/late bias in milliseconds, and spread for your ten most-played notes
- Notes name themselves — drum names for a kit, pitch names otherwise — and you can rename any of them
- Per-note stats are saved with your session history and appear in the Audio Unit too
Sequences
- Chain bars into a sequence: three bars of the groove, then a fill, cycling as you play
- Start one from any groove, set the order and repeats, and edit any bar in the groove editor
- Import multi-bar MIDI and MusicXML files as sequences, with a preview before you commit
- Export a sequence as a single multi-bar MIDI file
Goal Tempo
- Set a target BPM and automatic level-ups stop there instead of climbing forever
- The last step lands exactly on your goal, with a Goal Reached card in the session summary
Groove Editor
- Pick a snap resolution: 16ths, 32nds, 8th or 16th triplets, or free placement
- Toms and crash joined the click sound palette
- More room to work on iPad
Input and Timing
- A MIDI note range filter ignores stray very-low and very-high notes from MIDI guitars and pads, with a "Learn from this session" button that sets the range for you
- Calibration now matches your input: MIDI gets an offset slider, audio gets the microphone controls, and microphone access is actually requested
- Notes grow in real time as you hold them instead of jumping to the minimum length, with configurable minimum and maximum
- Advanced scoring parameters persist per device and save with presets on Custom difficulty
- Clearer explanation of what the consistency score actually measures
Fixes
- Fixed hung MIDI notes when note-off arrived for a different note
- Fixed a second hit on an already-scored beat counting twice
- Fixed the difficulty levels listing out of order in the Audio Unit plug-in
- Fixed the groove editor stacking clicks in a single slot
- Floating panel layout is remembered per device
- Practice timer gains a reset control and whole-minute stepping
