Familiar Player
Self-hosted music player
Free
Familiar is a self-hosted music player that understands the sound of your music, not just its metadata. Ask for "something that sounds like rain on a window" and it actually works.
Point Familiar at your own home server (macOS Docker, Linux, Synology, OpenMediaVault — whatever you run). Nothing leaves your network. No cloud accounts, no subscriptions, no tracking.
• AI chat and playlist creation — Powered by the Claude API using your own key. Describe a mood, a setting, a vibe; Familiar pulls from your library.
• Semantic audio search — CLAP embeddings let you match by how music sounds, not just artist or genre.
• Deep feature analysis — BPM, key, energy, brightness, danceability, valence, instrumentalness, and more, extracted on your server.
• Ambient mode — continuous drone plus ghostly snippets from your library, tuned to the current key.
• Community analysis cache — opt in to share anonymized audio fingerprints so others skip hours of analysis, and benefit from theirs.
• Smart playlists — rules-based playlists that update automatically as your library changes.
• Offline playback, lock-screen controls, synced lyrics (LRCLIB), Last.fm scrobbling.
• Works with FLAC, ALAC, MP3, AAC, Ogg, Opus.
Familiar is open-source (MIT) and requires you to run your own backend. Setup guides for Docker, macOS, and common NAS platforms are on GitHub.

Familiar 1.5 is the biggest update yet.
Pair with your server
• Scan a QR code from Familiar Server, open a pairing link, or pick your server from the list Familiar finds on your Wi-Fi. Required for servers set up with Familiar Server.
• Recent servers: switch between up to five servers in one tap.
Your music, away from home
• Your favourites are kept on your iPhone by default, and so are any playlists you choose to keep. They stay up to date in the background.
• When the server is out of reach, Familiar says so, and keeps playing what's on your phone.
• Each server gets up to 8 GB on your iPhone, and Settings › Downloads shows what each one holds.
• Lossless tracks download as AAC at about a quarter of the size. You can switch back to originals in Settings.
• Downloads show on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, with a stop button.
Finding and playing
• Artist pages open on a slideshow of freely licensed photos.
• Tap the artist or album in the player to go there.
• "Playing from" takes you back to where the music came from.
• Search sits at the top of every list (Artists, Albums, Tracks, Favorites) and searches what that screen shows.
• Make, edit and delete smart playlists on your iPhone.
• Favorites can be a grid of covers.
• Weighted shuffle presets now apply to Favorites.
Ambient mode
• A new synthesiser: twelve-voice pads, a melody composer, eight instruments and six presets, now on iPhone too.
Fixes
• Downloads are no longer re-fetched after updating.
• Many smaller fixes to the lock screen, downloads and the full player.
