Hanzi Mind: Learn Chinese HSK
Characters, writing & stories
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
New: My goals. Set your HSK exam date and get a week-by-week plan. Reading and writing with spaced repetition, 150 graded stories with audio and a guided class.
Learn Chinese properly: read, listen, speak and write. Hanzi Mind takes you from your first character to HSK 6 with spaced repetition that schedules reading and writing separately, because recognizing a character and writing it from memory are not the same skill. No outlines, no hints: if you needed help, it doesn't count as known.
Follow the syllabus lesson by lesson: all 146 lessons of HSK 1 to 6 (2.0 standard), the same as the HSK Standard Course textbook, split into 555 short classes with Lǎoshī, your guided teacher. The new HSK 3.0 is covered for levels 1, 2 and 3. Got an exam? Add the date in My goals and get a week-by-week plan.
Read 150 graded stories with audio that only use words you've already met, and download them to read offline. Plus: character anatomy and etymology, radicals and their families, dictation, tone drills and syllable-by-syllable pronunciation assessment.
What makes Hanzi Mind different:
- DUAL spaced repetition. Reading and writing are scheduled separately, because recognizing a character and being able to write it are not the same skill. Each one gets its own review date.
- No hints, no outlines. If you needed help to trace a character, it does not count as known.
- Dictation: write what you hear.
- A library of graded stories with audio, with vocabulary controlled to your lesson. Every story only uses words you have already seen, and you can download it to read and listen offline.
- Character etymology and, where ancient forms are documented, their animated evolution from oracle bone to modern stroke.
- Pronunciation assessment with syllable-by-syllable analysis and a profile of your recurring mistakes by initial, final and tone.
- Printable A4 calligraphy workbook.
- Tone drills with audio and recording.
How access works:
Free: the first HSK 1 lessons, complete. Not a cut-down demo: they include their audio, their stories and their etymology.
Core (one-time purchase): HSK 1 and 2, permanently.
Premium: everything. HSK 1 to 6, the full library, pronunciation assessment and AI help.
Fully available in English and Spanish.

more An app that's easier to find your way around

- Each level shows what you can practise for free.
- Library with no repeated stories, filters in view and "Continue…" for your series.
- Games are easier to choose: less text in the list, with the details when you open each one.
Writing and goals
- The writing summary now counts what you did correctly, even if you stop halfway.
- When a goal reaches its date, the app asks whether to extend it or close it.
- New words in the mission follow your level.
Improvements
- On the web, writing and draw-to-search also work when zoomed in.
- Stability fixes.
1.1.12 4d ago
A much shorter placement test
- At most 20 questions now (it used to take over 40), and it places you carefully so you don't skip what you don't know yet.
- See your progress by level (HSK1 · HSK2 · HSK3…) as you answer.
- Leave at any time and pick up later where you left off.
- If you have no goals, "My goals" offers the placement test, or lets you resume it if you left it halfway.
Improvements
- When you come back from a scene or a game, the list stays where you were.
- The home screen now scrolls fully on small phones.
1.1.10 Oct 17
Games, renewed
- New games showcase: find every game and scene at a glance, with its level and difficulty. "Play again" takes you back to the last one.
- "The first day of class": a free scene for complete beginners.
- Neighbourhood courier: "First steps" to learn directions one step at a time, a Practice mode with no score, and a new look.
- New: "Build the character" (meaning piece + sound piece) and "Word chain" (Premium).
- "Piece hunt": more rounds, a different piece each round, and the piece explained when you tap it.
- In every game: "I don't know" when you don't, and a correct answer moves you on automatically.
Improvements
- Scenes carry the hanzimind.com mark.
- Sound and small-screen layout fixes.
1.1.9 Oct 16
Traveller: your first expedition
- Free, in three stages (station, hotel and city): listen and decide, and write what you need to ask for. No timer.
New games
- Neighbourhood courier: read or listen to the directions and deliver the order junction by junction. One free neighbourhood and more with the plan.
- Piece hunt, Name what you see, Measure words and Where do I end up?
- "For you": scenes with words you're due to review come first.
Scenes: 25 in total
- 18 new with the plan: The neighbourhood, Travelling, The street, The kitchen, Clothes, The park, The market, The airport and the city, The office, The body inside and out, Animals, The coast after the storm, Food stall, Home repairs, Orchard and garden, Detailed anatomy, The pier and High mountains, with useful phrases.
- Three more free: Home and bathroom, Camping in the valley and Chinese food.
- A scene in your plan downloads once and also plays offline.
- On the HSK 3.0 syllabus all scenes now appear, and each word shows its level or that it's outside the HSK.
Improvements
- My goals: the mission also has you write long words.
- Some words show a note after you answer, such as the other reading of 流血.
1.1.8 Oct 15
The Lǎoshī class
- Fixed a bug where, in some classes, the writing canvas rejected every stroke.
- You can now go back from the writing screen too.
- Every hanzi in the explanations comes with its pinyin and translation.
- The header stays in place while you scroll.
Lessons
- Each lesson's sheet now tells "The class" apart from the "Lesson cards", and you pick the card parts from there.
Mission improvements
- In a new word with several characters, each character shows its pinyin and meaning (爬山: 山 · shān · mountain).
- "Place the pieces" explains, after a mistake, where each piece goes and what it adds.
- "Another round" is no longer empty when you have writing pending from your goals, and saying "Not now" to the class stops it coming back that day.
- Beyond your goal, the mission only reviews what you still remember.
- "See how it was born" only appears when the character has ancient forms; otherwise it shows you the memory trick.
- The memory trick is always for the character you are writing.
- Listening exercises only appear with recorded voice, and tell you if there is no sound.
- If the app can't load your goals, it uses the last saved copy or lets you retry.
Other improvements
- The pieces of each character show their meaning, offline too.
- Memory tricks reviewed: no piece is given a meaning that isn't its own.
- Worksheets: removed the evolution strip that came out blank.
1.1.6 Oct 13
New
- From time to time, the mission suggests an easy story to read.
- When the mission ends, it tells you what's waiting in Practice.
- A distraction-free first class: no header, no tab bar.
- Tones by ear: in the listening exercise, the character appears after you answer.
- Downloaded stories play in full offline, including when you tap a word.
Improvements
- The class close button is no longer hidden at the top of the iPhone screen.
- The writing canvas and coloured characters are no longer cut off.
- Your first class stays in sync between phone and web.
- On a shared device, each account keeps its own streak and progress.
- Workbooks warn you if an example sentence is missing.
- More accepted answers in grammar exercises, and memory tricks reviewed.
1.1.5 Oct 10
New
- The class for every lesson, from HSK1 to HSK6, is now in your plan.
- Whatever level you start at, your first day is a class at your level.
- Placement test on the free plan too, so you start where you really are.
- Go back to look again at the word you were just introduced to.
- From time to time, the mission suggests a quick round of tones.
- Your course, your language, the classes you've seen and "Today's mission complete" stay in sync between phone and web.
Improvements
- A lighter first class and, when it ends, you choose your goal: an exam, your course or book, or practice.
- Your goals drive new words, grammar and the class.
- New words show you their pieces.
- "Your class" in Settings.
- If you change plans, your progress follows you without losing what you practised.
- More memory tricks, reviewed.
1.1.4 Oct 9
New: your first class
- If you are starting from scratch, your first day is a short class: you listen to a dialogue, discover which pieces a character is made of, see how it has changed over 3,000 years, try your pronunciation and write it yourself after watching the stroke order. If writing gets in the way, you can carry on without it.
- The first HSK1 lessons and the first lesson of every level, HSK1 to HSK6, have their class in the lesson details ("The class"). The usual cards are still there.
New: the mission teaches you more
- When you get one right, the mission can show you something you are now ready to see: the piece that repeats in other characters you know, the one that gives the sound, or the pair you tend to mix up.
- "I need help" when a character won't come.
- When you finish, "Today's mission complete", with what you reviewed and learned.
Improvements
- My goals tells you which lessons your plan unlocks and which need another plan.
- Dozens of memory tricks reviewed and corrected.
- Classes no longer repeat featured characters.
1.1.3 Oct 7
Writing
- On iPhone, touches land exactly where you tap: no more bottom strokes that could not be written or buttons that did not respond.
- Asking for a hint or watching the animation no longer erases what you wrote.
- The app no longer zooms in by itself when you type in a text field.
Lǎoshī and grammar
- Vocabulary notes, objectives and each lesson's wrap-up now give the pinyin and translation of every Chinese sentence, from HSK1 to HSK6.
- The lesson wrap-up no longer gives away the words you are about to practice.
- More correct answers are accepted in grammar exercises.
Vocabulary and tones
- 16 words with their required neutral tone, proper names with their official pinyin, and corrected HSK6 entries.
- Tone and listening exercises no longer ask malformed syllables, and hyphenated chengyu now work.
Mission and first steps
- The mission only asks what is due for you.
- An empty plan no longer shows as "done", and the start button at the beginning takes you to the mission.
- When you start, you are no longer asked to sign in or buy before practicing: you start right away at your level.
- Lesson 1 of every HSK level, with its audio, its class and its grammar, is free: try your level before you decide.
- If you leave the lesson for later, it stays available to pick up again.
- After seeing how a character was born, you can go back to the word without moving to the next step.
- If you give up while writing, you can see that piece's family; and if a character keeps tripping you up, the app offers you a trick to remember it.
- In "My goals", lessons are now picked from a list.
- Tweaks to the header, "Your progress" and "Settings".
Library
- Covers for the HSK4 to HSK6 stories.
1.1.2 Oct 3
New: much clearer grammar
- Every grammar explanation from HSK1 to HSK6 now gives the pinyin and translation of each Chinese sentence, including «Not like this / Better like this» and the Lǎoshī cards.
- Every grammar point taught in class with the HSK3 to HSK6 slides now has its own card: explanation in the Lǎoshī, structure and practice exercises.
- No exercise shows you the answer before you reply: the hint appears afterwards, if you get it wrong.
- We have reviewed the text of every level: correct pinyin tones, more natural translations, and correct sentences that used to be marked as wrong.
New: My notes
- Jot down what you learn in class in each lesson's detail. Your notes are private.
New in the library
- «甘蔗没有两头甜», an HSK4 story about a popular saying, with audio.
Improvements
- Mission: when you miss a sentence, a large card shows its pinyin, level and lesson.
- My goals: writing reviews follow your «Writing order».
- Keywords: the «In flashcards» filter is gone; every word already shows its own label.
1.1.1 Oct 2
New: My goals
- Set your exam date or a target (which levels and lessons, reading or writing) and the app builds a week-by-week plan. You can have several goals at once, include grammar and, at the end, a consolidation phase with every review behind a single button.
- The daily mission follows your plan: your goals come first, in the skill you chose; other reviews come in with a daily allowance so they don't pile up. New words come from your goals, and only from lessons your plan has already opened.
Improvements
- When you miss a word in the mission, it tells you its level and lesson.
- Mission grammar opens as a guided review, at the level of its grammar point, and its sentences match your level.
- "I can't listen now" now also works in writing dictation.
- Writing: fixed an iPhone issue where a stroke sometimes couldn't be completed. The coach talks about the character in progress and, if you give up, shows you the whole word.
- List: "Park" is now a visible button, and parked words stand out in the grid.
- Lessons: the "Measured" badge is now called "Practised" and explains what it means.
- Grammar: HSK3, HSK4 and HSK5 exercises accept every correct answer and no longer present correct sentences as mistakes. Points you haven't practised yet no longer show as "Mastered", and "Blocks" splits the sentence into words.
- Stories: you can now see who is speaking in dialogues, pinyin also appears in the quiz, and the player controls show when you open a story. We reviewed the HSK1 to HSK6 quizzes so every answer is grounded in the text, and 31 stories that had no quiz now have one.
- Lǎoshī: HSK3, HSK4 and HSK5 lessons now include the nuances and word contrasts explained in class (for example 适合 vs 合适, or affirmative 从来). HSK4 lesson 1 has been fully reviewed: grammar, class, definitions and the fable 守株待兔.
- HSK5 and HSK6: 11 missing words added.
- Story quizzes now shuffle their options.
1.1.0 Oct 1
- New: in an HSK4 lesson's detail, "Select by block" marks in one go the words taught together in class. Blocks add up, so you can get ahead of your next class.
- HSK4 vocabulary reviewed: 22 new words and 8 moved to their correct lesson, with their classes, example sentences and audio.
- The writing hint now draws more slowly and shows the direction of each stroke.
- Writing on iPad in landscape: the coach is no longer cut off and the canvas is larger.
- If you miss a word, it comes back to review soon instead of jumping to a long interval.
- Mnemonics no longer present as history what is only a memory trick.
- Security improvements.
1.0.11 Sep 28
- New: tap a lesson to open its detail. From there you continue the class or practise just the words you choose, in reading or writing.
- New: Guided dictation, to prepare your class dictation writing on paper.
- New (Premium): Print sheet. A PDF with the words you chose to practise away from the screen, with the answers on a separate page.
- New: park a word for a few days without losing its progress, and resume it whenever you like.
- Words you have just learned to write now show when their first review is due.
- The review card is no longer cut off at the bottom on the largest iPhones.
- The historical evolution of characters no longer labels forms as bronze when they were not.
- Fixed: the prompt to leave a mission was hidden behind the canvas in writing steps.
- The Writing route sections now show their titles in English.
1.0.10 Sep 26
- New: search by drawing. Tap the pencil in the List search box and draw the character, in any stroke order.
- Search results now show each word's pinyin, meaning, level and lesson, with what matched highlighted. You can search with tones too: "ni3".
- Characters from levels you haven't unlocked also show up in search, with the basics (pinyin, meaning, level and lesson) and a lock.
- New detail panel in the List, with the character's anatomy at a glance. On iPad in landscape it opens alongside.
- Colored anatomy now splits strokes in writing order for several HSK 4-6 characters.
1.0.9 Sep 24
- Some reviews in Practice were not being saved, so the List kept showing you the same characters no matter how much you practised them. Every review now counts.
- Writing: the first time you write a character it is taught to you, and the next day it comes back to check whether you remember it. Asking for help in the middle of a review counts as not getting it, and the character comes back soon instead of weeks later.
- Parked cards no longer show up when reviewing from the List, and "Resume" is saved properly.
- On iPhone, opening Practice could leave the screen zoomed in and cut off on the right. Not any more.
- At the end of a mission, "New in your collection" shows the words you just learned, not the next batch.
- The mission now updates your level too, not just the List.
- In Writing with the evolutionary order, some List blocks had no button to practise them.
1.0.8 Sep 22
- With the phone in landscape, the character in the question was cut off at the bottom. Padding meant for tablets was leaking into any wide screen, however short.
- When you get one wrong, the app marks which answer was right —because that is where you learn— but on short screens that option could sit hidden behind the footer. It is now brought into view.
- You can park a card for 1, 3 or 6 months: it stops asking you for a while. It is not deleted and not marked as known, your history stays as it is and it comes back on its own. Parked cards are counted next to the due ones.
1.0.7 Sep 12
- New app icon.
- On iPad at night, the Chinese text in the reader was near-white on a near-white panel: unreadable. Fixed.
- On iPad the story covers were cropped through the middle, leaving the faces outside the frame.
- 你 —the very first character you meet— announced "6 Ancient Eras" and then showed six empty slots: it was formed after the oracle-bone period and has none. It now tells you so, and takes you to its etymology and components, which it does have.
- Settings > My course: if you are taking a course elsewhere, you can say which level and lesson you are on and the lǎoshī will teach that class. Your reviews do not change: they still come from what you have already studied.
- Reminders no longer throw your whole backlog count at you when it is large. They point you to today's mission, which is what is actually waiting.
1.0.6 Sep 11
- The "Review updated" toast no longer stays on screen: it dismisses itself again.
- The example sentence on the back of a Reading card no longer vanished when the confusion hint appeared.
- Lessons: the "Practice" button did nothing if you had left the study mode set to Grammar.
- The App Store now lists the app as available in Spanish.
1.0.4 Aug 30
- iPad: in landscape, the Reading card no longer splits into two columns or clips the pinyin.
- iPad: on each level's welcome screen, the label no longer overlaps the title.
- The app now declares Spanish as a supported language, not just English.
1.0.3 Aug 27
- iPad: in landscape, the Reading card is no longer cut off or hidden behind the bottom bar.
- Practice: when recalling a character from its meaning, the top bar no longer revealed the answer.
- Library: the "Top picks for you" shelf now follows your app language instead of always showing Spanish.
- Plans screen: fixed the comparison table, which understated what each plan includes.
1.0.2 Aug 26
An app that's easier to find your way around
- "Lǎoshī" is now called "Today", and all four tabs always show their name.
- Practice redesigned: pick a lesson and one sheet gives you the class, the words (read, write, dictation and print) and that lesson's grammar.
