Inverza: Photo Weather
Plan sun, moon, light & clouds
Only for iPhone
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS.
Plan your next landscape photograph around the light. Inverza brings weather forecasts, photographic conditions, terrain shadows, sun and moon paths, AR planning and AI explanations into one app, made by a landscape photographer.
FIND PHOTOGRAPHIC CONDITIONS
Explore 16 conditions, including colourful dawn, afterglow, cloud inversions, ground fog, hoarfrost, fresh snow, lenticular clouds, Brocken spectres, reflecting waters, the Milky Way and aurora. Each prediction includes a suggested time and a confidence band to help you compare opportunities.
Dawn and afterglow analysis checks cloud layers up to 450 km towards the sun, estimating whether light can reach the clouds above your location. Detectors also consider available upper-air profiles, aerosols, nearby airport observations, water conditions and light pollution. Forecasts remain estimates, and local conditions can differ.
ASK ABOUT YOUR SHOT
"Will there be fog at the lake tomorrow morning?" Ask in plain language and get an explanation based on the weather and your selected location. Built-in Gemini 3.8 Flash needs no API key. You can also use your own Claude, Gemini or ChatGPT key. AI sharing requires your permission; maps, weather and planning work without AI chat.
PLAN SUN, MOON AND SHADOWS
Use the terrain shadow map and time slider to estimate where sunlight reaches. A 360° horizon chart places sun and moon paths against terrain and mapped buildings. Explore the scene in the 3D Diorama, including solar-eclipse planning through 2030. Terrain and building detail depend on the available source data.
SEE THE SKY IN AR
Overlay sun and moon paths, the Milky Way's galactic centre and twilight markers on your live camera view. Move through time, choose a focal length and prepare your composition. Compass calibration, guides to off-screen targets and night mode help you plan in the field.
SAVE SPOTS AND SET ALERTS
Discover viewpoints, waterfalls, castles, bridges and other photographic locations from OpenStreetMap. Save your favourites, set a viewing direction and mark your photographic subject. Create alerts for one or several spots and filter by proximity. Notifications depend on permissions, connectivity and iOS background scheduling.
FIND SUN AND MOON ALIGNMENTS
Plan the moon above a church tower or the sun along a ridge. Search by azimuth, elevation, dates and moon phase, and adjust photographer and subject heights. Use the controls or describe your shot in Find with AI, then review the settings. Inverza calculates matching times on your device. Preview results in the 3D Diorama and save or load your shooting plan, including locations, date, time and camera view.
REVIEW AND SHARE
Record whether a predicted condition happened and review your own judged predictions in Condition History. Long-press a condition badge to share a card. Inspect the underlying forecasts in Raw Weather Data, including cloud layers, aerosol optical depth, model agreement and winds aloft.
ONE SUBSCRIPTION, ALL FEATURES
A 14-day free trial includes full access, followed by an annual subscription. The local price and renewal terms are shown before purchase. Cancel renewal in your App Store subscription settings.
No account required. No in-app ads. Available in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian.
PRIVACY
Saved spots and chat history are stored on your device. Weather and map services receive the location information needed for their features. With your permission, the selected AI provider receives your question and relevant conversation, location and planning context.

1.7 Sep 7
- improved location search and filter
1.6.5 Aug 30
- Default AI Chat model is now Gemini 3.7 Flash
- AR View now shows live degree readouts for sun, moon, and Milky Way above the horizon.
- Showing first-load note in Shadow Map and 3D Diorama while data is cached to improve UX.
- Manage your saved spots right in map search.
- Building shadows are now on by default.
- Many UI polish touches throughout.
1.6.4 Aug 21
- Plan solar eclipses in the 3D Diorama: scrub to the moment, watch sun and moon overlap, and read the exact coverage percentage. NASA-grade precision for every total and annular eclipse through 2030.
- The moon now shows its true apparent size next to the sun, from supermoon to annular ring.
- AR View aligns sun and moon more precisely with the real sky.
- Sharper dioramas: real coastlines from OpenStreetMap, plus trees and forests that cast shadows.
1.6.3 Aug 14
- Further AR Sky View improvements (e.g. realistic moon illumination)
1.6.2 Aug 1
- Smarter alerts: every condition detector now checks more of the real sky before promising a photo, from haze on the horizon and live airport reports to clouds in the moon's own direction and real-time aurora data.
- AR Sky View polish: sun and moon symbols are now sized to match each lens, and once true darkness falls the display drops its warm tint for a cleaner night view.
1.6.1 Aug 1
- New on the shadow map: building shadows. Zoom into a city, tap the building button, and see which streets and squares get sun at any time of day, built from OpenStreetMap outlines.
- New Horizon Paths 3D. Tap "Diorama" on a saved spot to explore it as a 3D model: real terrain, OpenStreetMap buildings, and the sun and moon paths drawn in the sky. Shadows and light follow the time slider, from golden hour into moonlight.
- Raw data charts: tap the new layers button on any cloud timeline to see low, mid, and high clouds as three lines at once.
- Charts for pressure, freezing level, and temperatures now scale to their data, so changes show as real movement instead of a flat line.
- The AI now spots rainbow chances: when a storm clears at the right sun angle, it tells you the time and the compass direction to watch.
Plus the usual round of fixes and polish.
1.6 Jul 28
- Everything weather is faster: forecasts now load in a snap, even on first open.
- New: tap any value in Raw Weather Data to explore it as an interactive 7-day chart, with pinch zoom, weather condition markers, and day/night shading.
- Smarter predictions: confidence now reflects how far out an event is, plus local terrain, moonlight, storm behaviour, and more.
- Smarter background checks that go easier on your battery, while alerts stay just as reliable.
Plus the usual round of fixes and polish.
1.5.6 Jul 15
Minor bugfixes & expanded expert photography knowledge
1.5.5 Jul 12
- AR Sky View: point your camera at the sky to see sun, moon, and Milky Way paths overlaid on the live view, tracked with ARKit. Switch between your lenses by focal length and scrub through time.
- Rock-solid AR tracking: the compass re-anchors itself after you move, and the view recovers on its own from sensor hiccups.
- More reliable alerts: a bug that could stop automatic background checks is fixed, and notifications are now time-sensitive, so a dawn alert reaches you even during Sleep Focus.
Plus fixes and refinements, including faster weather checks on weak connections.

1.5.2 Jun 29
New AR Sky view: point your phone and see the sun, moon, Milky Way, and North Star in the real sky, at any time you want to plan for, with a dark-adapted Night Mode.
New Raw Weather Data Alerts (for wind, rain, snow, temperature).
Horizon paths for sun and moon, photo subjects, dark-sky awareness, and a sharper AI.
Photo Subjects: pair each photo spot with the actual subject you're shooting (a mountain face, lighthouse, lake, or castle), up to 50 km away. Inverza identifies what it is from OpenStreetMap (peak, glacier, waterfall, lighthouse, alpine hut, and 17 more) and reasons about lighting the subject, not just the sun. For distant subjects (>20 km) it pulls a second weather forecast at the subject's coordinates so you catch spotlight conditions when the photographer is in cloud but the peak is in the clear.
Context-aware AI with even better Pro-Photographer knowledge: 22 per-subject photographic playbooks now live in the AI prompt. Waterfalls suggest soft light and ND filters; glaciers get alpenglow timing; lighthouses get blue-hour beam advice; peaks get telephoto compression. The AI also no longer tells you to "turn away from the subject" when the sun is behind you. That's now correctly framed as front-lit golden hour.
Horizon Paths: a new 360° terrain horizon strip on the spot detail card with sun and moon arcs for every day. Navigate by hour or day, and toggle the Photographer/Subject view to see how light falls at either vantage.
Dark-sky integration: Bortle class lookups (NOAA VIIRS, bundled global ~1 km raster) now gate and rank Milky Way and Aurora detections. Inner-city skies hard-gate; suburban skies caveat. Aurora detection respects strong-storm modulation through skyglow.
Plus tutorial polish, sun-azimuth and moon-arc bug fixes, and a refreshed spot detail card.

Notifications improved. Fixed a long-standing scheduling bug where automatic alerts could silently stop after force-quitting or rebooting your iPhone.
Memories. Bookmark great AI responses in chat and revisit, annotate, or export them as text or Markdown.
Storm Clouds detected even better. Just in time for thunderstorm season, the Dramatic Storm Clouds detector now reads CAPE, Lifted Index and WMO weather codes - so windy-but-stable days don't trigger false alarms. When a real cell is forecast, the badge spells out both prime photo windows: shelf cloud 30-90 min before the core arrives, then mammatus and back-anvil glow 30-90 min after. It also names where the storm comes from (using 700 hPa steering flow) and flags golden-hour overlap. The AI chat now has full storm-chaser knowledge built in - ask "is this worth chasing?" or "where should I face?" and get a real answer.
Other recent improvements:
• Shadow Map slider now steps in 5-minute increments, with new ‹/› nudge buttons next to the quick-jumps
• Smarter Lenticular Cloud detection using upper-level winds and ridge geometry
• Water-aware Ground Fog (advection fog at cold coasts, steam fog over warm lakes)
• Multi-location alerts so you can monitor several spots at once
• Terrain-draped sunrise/sunset/moonrise direction lines on the map
• AI chat now sees each detector's specific recommendation (lens, ISO, orientation)
Plus the usual polish, bug fixes, and faster network handling. Happy chasing.

1.2.3 May 11
- New Localization settings: choose your timezone or the spot's local for condition times, with optional dual-clock annotation.
- New Lenticular Clouds condition. Combines 700 / 500 hPa winds with terrain ridge analysis to surface the moments mountain ranges sculpt those iconic stacked lens-shaped clouds above the ridgelines.
- Water-aware ground fog. Inverza now reads sea-surface temperatures and inland water-temperature estimates to spot two more fog patterns photographers love: coastal advection fog (warm moist air over cooler seas - SF Bay, the UK coast, the Pacific Northwest) and inland steam fog (cold dawn air over warmer lakes and rivers - that classic "smoke on the lake" look). Three distinct fog pathways now run side-by-side: radiation, advection, and steam.
- Brocken Spectre: smarter terrain filtering. The detector now checks whether you're actually on open ground using OpenStreetMap landcover and a latitude-aware tree-line. Forested mid-altitude summits are filtered out, so your alerts only fire where the spectre can really form - exposed ridges, summits, alpine outcrops.
- Smaller install, smarter storage. Terrain tiles for every region, including the Alps, now download on demand instead of shipping with the app. The download is a one-time fetch per area, cached forever, and you can free up space per region from Settings → Terrain Tiles whenever you want.
- Multi-location alerts. One alert can now track several locations at once. Pick aurora, lenticular clouds, or any other rare condition, choose the spots you'd be willing to travel to, and Inverza notifies you whichever one lights up first.
- Live badges in their proper time slot. When METAR ground observations confirm a forecast, the "Live" badge now sits in the right position on the conditions carousel instead of jumping to the end.
- Haptics across the board. Light Taptic Engine pulses confirm shadow timeline scrubs (one tap per hour), condition badge scrolling, and successful pull-to-refresh on the chat tab.
A reminder of what powers the experience
- GPU (Metal) acceleration. Shadow computations run on Apple's Metal compute kernels, projecting solar geometry across SRTM elevation tiles in milliseconds rather than seconds - even on full mountain ranges with thousands of sample points.
- Vector Shadow Maps. Shadows render as crisp polygon overlays rather than bitmaps, so they stay sharp at any zoom level and any camera pitch - no pixelation when you tap to inspect a fjord or ridge.
- 3D Shadow Map. Pitch the camera to see how shadow lines drape across real terrain elevation in real time, helping you predict exactly when a given peak, valley, or coastline will fall into golden light.
1.2.2 May 5
