Matsuri 祭

Experiences & shrines in Japan

Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Answer one question a day and draw today’s omikuji. Every day you keep going grows your flame, and a widget keeps it on your Home Screen. Nine languages. A night visit to Hanazono Shrine, then on to Golden Gai. A morning food walk through Tsukiji Outer Market. Matsuri helps you find experiences in Japan and book them in the app. At many sacred sites, the torii asks you questions first. Get three right in a row and it opens. Then bow, ring the bell and draw an omikuji. Each day, answer one question and draw today’s omikuji; your streak shows in a widget. Emergency Mode is there for a day you hope never comes. NINE LANGUAGES Matsuri works in Japanese, English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Norwegian and Spanish. Choose one when you first open the app and switch any time from the globe on My Page. Signed-in users get emails and notifications in that language too. FIND, CHECK AND BOOK EXPERIENCES Browse Guided Tours, Experiences, Meetups and Events that are on the calendar now. For now, most of them are in Tokyo. Each experience page shows the highlights, the price, dates, what’s included and the meeting point. Pick a date and party size to book, and your ticket arrives as a QR code in My Page. Prices are the total you pay by card, with tax and the card fee. SHRINE VISITS The Shrines tab shows the sacred site nearest to you and one button for what to do next. Where a site has torii questions, the button reads “Take on the torii questions”. Answer them one at a time, on shrine history and legends, the kami and etiquette. Get three right in a row and the torii opens. If you miss, you see the right answer with an explanation and its source. Then tilt your phone forward to bow twice, and give it a gentle shake to ring the bell four times. Tapping the screen works too. There’s no wrong way to bow and nothing there is scored; the camera is never used. Draw an omikuji, and a page is added to the Goshuin book in the app and a lantern is lit. Both are records kept in the app; a goshuin is received in person at a shrine or temple. At some sites, “About this shrine” on the site page introduces the kami enshrined there, their blessings, and the shrine’s history and stories, with sources. SHOP Browse crafts and goods from Japanese ateliers and shops, by season, by craft (tea, ceramics, calligraphy and more) or for gifting. Deliver to your hotel or your home in Japan. Some items can also be shipped abroad. Prices include tax; shipping is calculated at checkout. RESTAURANTS AND THE TAXI CARD Find restaurants by dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan or halal, and by cuisine, area and price. Booking happens on each restaurant’s own site. “Show a taxi driver” puts the restaurant’s name and address in large Japanese, and you can copy the address in Japanese. Dietary tags come from each restaurant; please confirm with the restaurant. EMERGENCY MODE Find the nearest official evacuation sites on a map and in a list (data from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan). Distance and direction work without a signal. There is also a safety guide for each hazard, an offline board for nearby phones that have the app open, official alerts from the Japan Meteorological Agency, a way to tell people you’re safe, and an SOS signal. No account needed. Emergency Mode is for reference and is not an earthquake early-warning system. In a real evacuation, follow on-site signs and local authorities. PAYMENTS AND MTC POINTS Pay by card, or with crypto such as SOL from a Solana wallet app. MTC Points are used inside the app: drawing an omikuji at a sacred site adds a few, within limits, and you can use them to pay for experiences and shop orders. You never need them to use Matsuri. Nothing here is financial advice or a promise about MTC’s value. GOOD TO KNOW - Booking, buying, Shrine Visits and the daily question require sign-in. No account needed just to look around. - Experience photos are illustrative (some are AI-generated). - Listings of experiences, products, sacred sites and restaurants change from day to day. What's New in v1.2.5 - Daily question and today's omikuji: answer one question a day from the card on Home, right or wrong, and draw that day's omikuji. Each rank unfolds a little differently. - Every day you keep going grows your flame, with a celebration on milestone days. Miss a day and a rest token, if you have one, keeps your streak going. Your longest streak never goes down. - New widgets for the Home Screen and Lock Screen show your streak, today's omikuji and newly added sacred sites. The app shows you how to add them. - Turn on the evening reminder and you'll get a quiet nudge at the time you choose, only on days you haven't answered yet. - Experience prices now show one number: the total you pay by card, with tax and the card fee included. Shop prices are shown with tax. - You can now use a coupon you hold when booking an experience. If you have one, the experience page also shows the price after the discount. Your coupons are in My Page. - When you delete an account that uses Sign in with Apple, the link with Apple can now be revoked too. Password reset opens the web page in your app language, and sign-in and sign-up errors now appear in your language. - Phone verification now accepts AutoFilled numbers with +81 and full-width digits, and if you leave the screen after sending, you can still enter the code. - Invite links and codes are accepted in any form, and right after signing up you're asked once whether you have an invite code. - If a change ever requires a newer version, the app can now ask you to update (Emergency Mode still opens from that screen). - On iPad, torii questions now sit in the middle of the screen at a comfortable reading width. - Fixed, at the root, screens that were cut off on the left and right on some iPhones.
