Photo Export is an open-source Mac app that backs up your Apple Photos library to any local or external drive, organized by year and month. No account, no cloud, no subscription: just a folder of your photos on a drive you control.
EVERY PHOTO, THE WAY YOU LEFT IT
Each photo is exported as Photos shows it, with your edits, crops and adjustments, under its original filename. Want the untouched originals too? Turn on Include originals. You can also convert HEIC to JPEG, export Live Photo videos next to their stills, and keep videos in their own subfolder.
TIMELINE OR COLLECTIONS
Browse by year and month, or by Favorites, albums and the folders you've grouped them into. Sidebar counts show at a glance what's already exported.
EXPORT ONE ALBUM, A FOLDER, OR EVERYTHING
One click exports an album. Select a folder in the sidebar and the same click exports every album inside it. Cmd-click to pick individual items, or Shift-click to select a range. Your album structure is kept on disk: Collections/Albums/Trips/Iceland/ stays exactly that.
KEEPS ITSELF UP TO DATE
Turn on Auto Export, choose Timeline, Favorites or Albums, and Photo Export keeps your backup current as new photos arrive in Apple Photos. Temporary problems retry on their own; anything that needs your attention appears in Export Issues with a Retry button. Auto Export is off until you turn it on.
PICKS UP WHERE IT LEFT OFF
Photo Export remembers every file it has exported. Pause a long export or unplug the drive, and the next export continues where it stopped, without copying anything twice.
BRING AN EXISTING BACKUP
Already have an export folder? Choose File → Import Existing Backup. Photo Export matches the files in it back to your library, so a new Mac or a fresh install carries on without exporting everything again.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Photo Export reads your library through PhotoKit, Apple's official framework for Photos. No private APIs, no telemetry, no cloud services, and nothing leaves your Mac. Open source under the MIT license.
Also available free on GitHub; buying it on the Mac App Store supports continued development. Both versions have the same features.
Requires macOS 15.0 or later. Runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

More reliable export history, clearer recovery from interrupted backups, and previews and progress that stay in step with your Photos library.
• Preserve backup progress through interruptions
Export history is better protected if an export is interrupted or cancelled while a photo is being saved. Choosing Export Month for a paused month resumes it, along with any other months waiting to export. Import Existing Backup keeps your progress if checking the backup fails, explains how to recover when history can't be read, and no longer keeps scanning in the background after you cancel it.
• See accurate results and actionable export issues
Progress and history follow the destination and album you're viewing. Manual exports report how they went, and export issues name the affected photo and its date when available. If the backup folder stops accepting files, the export stops and explains how to fix it.
• Keep previews and selections current
Thumbnails and the large preview update after you edit in Photos. While your library refreshes, sidebar counts stay visible and grid and folder selections keep the items that are still there.
• Keep Auto Export work safe for retry
Changes in your Photos library during an export are picked up on the next run. Turning Auto Export off stops an automatic export in progress; the rest exports the next time Auto Export runs.
• Recover more clearly when a destination is unavailable
Missing, read-only and inaccessible backup folders get clearer explanations and recovery actions.
