Found a rock and want to know what it is? Take a photo or pick one from Photos to see its name, how close the match is, its hardness and where it is found.
Rock Identifier names a rock, crystal, gem, mineral or fossil from one photo. Take a picture or pick one from Photos, and you get its name, how close the match is, and the next closest rock.
It is made for anyone who brings a rock home from a hike, a beach or a riverbank, or keeps a shelf of finds that never got a name.
EVERY RESULT SHOWS
- The rock's name, its category and how rare it is, from Common to Very Rare
- A match percentage, plus the next closest rock under "Could also be"
- Its story, and where in the world it is found
- Hardness on the Mohs scale, chemical formula, crystal system and luster
- What crystal tradition says about it, under Meaning and lore
- Handling notes for rocks that need care, such as selenite, which dissolves in water
SET UP AROUND WHAT YOU COLLECT
Three questions at the start shape the app. Pick crystals, gemstones, fossils, minerals or the rocks you pick up, and those lead Explore. Pick what you want to know first, from its story to its science, and every result opens on that part. Pick how deep you go, and results start short or show every detail.
EXPLORE ROCKS, MINERALS AND FOSSILS
Browse rocks, minerals, crystals, gems and fossils, from granite, geodes and obsidian to amethyst, opal, Lake Superior agate, Petoskey stones, shark teeth, ammonites and iron meteorites, sorted into Crystals, Gems, Rocks, Minerals and Fossils.
MY ROCKS
Every rock you identify is saved to My rocks with your photo and the date, and counted from Common to Very Rare. Share any find as an image.
A ROCK FACT EVERY DAY
Home shows a new fact each day, such as the zircon crystals that are 4.4 billion years old, with a link to read about that rock.
PRO
Pro identifies every rock you photograph. Explore, My rocks and sharing are open to everyone.
Identification runs online, so it needs an internet connection. A photo the app cannot read, or one sent while offline, does not use an identification. A result is the closest match from one photo. Rock Identifier does not estimate a price or test whether a crystal is real, so for a valuable piece, ask a geologist or a gem lab.
Pick up the next rock you find and take a photo.

Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Rock Identifier 1.1 is rebuilt inside and out. Three questions at setup decide which rocks lead Explore and which part of each result you see first. Explore is open to everyone and now includes geodes, shark teeth, Petoskey stones and Lake Superior agates. Every rock you identify is saved to My rocks with the date. Home shows a new rock fact each day. You can pick a photo from your library, and a photo the app cannot read costs nothing.
