fink - birdwatching community
Bird ID, sightings & live map
Only for iPhone
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS.
Somewhere right now a rare bird turns up. Someone spots it, a pin appears on the map, and for a few hours that place matters.
Until now those moments disappeared into notebooks, WhatsApp groups and chat histories. With fink they become visible.
fink is the app for birdwatching and bird photography: a live map of the bird world, your personal atlas and a community of birders and photographers. Built on Helgoland, one of the most important migration sites in Europe.
fink is a subscription app. Every account gets the whole app for 30 days, no subscription needed. After that you decide whether to continue with Standard or Pro.
THE LIVING MAP
See which birds are around you right now. Every sighting appears on the map the moment someone logs it. Log your own outside, in seconds.
WAIT, WHAT WAS THAT?
One photo or a few answers about size, colour and behaviour, and FinkDetector names the most likely species. Bird identification without a field guide.
YOUR ATLAS
Every species you have ever seen stays in your atlas: species, photo, place, date. You see which of Europe's 900-plus bird species you are still missing. And whatever you logged in other apps before comes along in one go.
YOUR GLOBE
Everything you have ever seen, as pins on your own globe. Year by year, trip by trip.
THE BIRD WIKI
More than 900 European bird species: field marks, habitat, voice, eggs, and how common the species is where you are, month by month. Plus around 10,000 species from all over the world for your travels.
FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
Your best photos sit in the wiki with their species. Several times a year there is a photo contest with a jury, a community final and prizes, with photo challenges in between.
THE COMMUNITY
Follow other birders, confirm sightings near you, join guilds and take on challenges together. Feed, chats and a notification when something rare turns up near you.
ARE YOU A GOOD BIRDER?
Your statistics show where you stand: compared with friends, your guild and your region, which birds you missed and when you are most active. With fink Pro.
PROTECTED
Locations of rare and threatened species are blurred automatically. You can blur your own sightings yourself at any time.
WHY FINK
Birding is popular, but the digital tools for it still feel like 2010. fink does not change the hobby, it makes what you already do easier and better. And many individual sightings add up to a dataset that supports research and conservation.
By the way: in Halunder, the language of Helgoland, fink simply means bird.
No ads. We do not sell your data.
SUBSCRIPTION
Every account gets 30 days of full access; after that a subscription is required. Standard is the whole app. Pro adds your own guilds, other birders' globes, favourite birds on your profile, statistics and the Pro badge. Prices are listed below under In-App Purchases. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Cancel in the App Store, in your Apple ID settings.

Challenges are now open to whole guilds.
Guild challenges
• Owners, admins and moderators enable a challenge for their guild

• "Pins" is now "sightings", both had meant the same thing
Everywhere
• Pull down to reload on your profile, in creators, in the gallery, in the leaderboard and on the guild page

• For a wrong species you pick the right one and say what you based it on
• A good photo filed under the wrong species moves there instead of disappearing
Creators
• Posts can be considerably longer
• The short view shows every image side by side instead of only the first one
• The field you tap stays in view when the keyboard opens
Photo contest

1.4.0 Aug 28
Faster, calmer, and a new start.
The map used to keep computing even when nothing was happening. That is fixed: it now comes to rest, and your location is no longer polled at full precision every second. You will notice it in battery life and temperature.
New
• A new welcome screen: fink greets you with the living map instead of an off-the-shelf landscape.
• The map opens in a view that actually shows something. Tap the map icon to tilt between flat and angled, double tap to return to the default view.
• Chat now supports photos, locations, your own sightings, bird cards, reactions, replies, editing and deleting. Use @ to mention people.
• New "Performance" settings page: choose how many pins each map draws, separately for live map, guild and globe.
• The full-screen globe filters by favorites, "not in atlas" and friends.
• New map filters: friends only, not in atlas, just now.
Improved
• A bird that does not occur at your location now requires a photo as proof.
• Wiki search works in both languages: "Common Blackbird" and "Amsel" both find the same bird.
• Proof photos taken of a camera display are now accepted.
Fixed
• Crashes when zooming out and when opening chat or guilds.
• Freezes of several seconds and permanently high battery drain.
• The keyboard covered the chat input.
• On Android: blurry bird heads, blotchy atlas birds, pins that only appeared after zooming out, picker wheels that would not spin, and headings in the wrong font.
Plus more than a hundred smaller fixes!
1.3.0 Aug 26
Your photos now earn feathers. Every photo that makes it into the wiki pays out feathers based on its rating, and you collect them straight from your notifications.
Wrong species? No problem. If your photo shows a different bird than the one you picked, fink files it under the right species instead of turning it away.
Look through your friends' collections. Open another birder's atlas and see which species the two of you share.
Also in this update:
- Every bird now appears in its own habitat instead of the same background
- One screen for adding photos, with the species already filled in when you come from a bird page
- No more waiting after an upload: your photos are checked in the background
- You decide whether your wiki photos may be shown on our social media channels, with credit and revocable at any time
- The reporting radius follows you as you move, and it is larger
- Notifications from a chat open that chat again, and comment notifications open the comment
- Creators can publish again
