Look for Veil in the top menu bar. New Chinese/English language control, plus opt-in face auto-unlock and away auto-shield.
Veil is a screen shield for AI-era Mac workflows.
Veil is a menu bar app. After opening it, look for the eye icon at the top-right of your screen; it does not show a traditional main window.
When Claude Code, Cursor, a download, or a render is still running but you need to leave your desk, Veil blacks out every display while keeping your Mac awake. When you return, if you have manually enabled Face auto-unlock, Veil recognizes you on-device and lifts the shield.
Important: automatic features are off by default. Veil will not suddenly black out your screen, and enrolling your face does not automatically enable face unlock. Face auto-unlock, Auto-Shield, startup shielding, and Break Reminders are all opt-in from Settings.
— Quick Start —
1. Click the menu bar eye icon, or press Control + Option + Command + V.
2. Every display goes black, hiding your screen contents.
3. Your Mac stays awake while AI agents, downloads, and renders keep running.
4. Click again to manually lift the shield.
— Face auto-unlock (opt-in) —
Choose Enroll My Face... from the menu bar and follow 5 camera captures. After enrollment, open Settings and enable Face auto-unlock. Then, while Veil is shielded, returning to your desk lets Veil lift its own black screen shield.
Face auto-unlock only unlocks the Veil overlay. It does not replace macOS login and does not bypass your Mac password.
— Auto-Shield when away (opt-in) —
Open Settings → Auto-Shield, enable Auto-shield when I leave my desk, then set Trigger after to choose the delay from 5 to 300 seconds.
Once enabled, Veil uses the camera to detect when no face is in range. Only after your selected delay does it shield the screen. This is off by default to avoid surprise activation.
— Agent Mode —
Pick a 10 / 30 / 60 minute timer for unattended AI work. Veil shows a live countdown on the shield so you know how long the task has been running when you return.
— Break Reminders —
In Settings → Break Reminders, write your own prompts and choose a 5 to 180 minute interval. Veil quietly posts reminders through macOS Notification Center without blocking your screen.
— Lid-Close Persistence Guide —
If you want your MacBook to keep working with the lid closed, Veil shows the macOS command and lets you run it yourself in Terminal. Veil never runs sudo for you.
— Privacy —
Veil is sandboxed. No accounts, no network access, no telemetry, no third-party SDKs. Face data is stored locally as a Vision feature print and never uploaded or shared.
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Added a first-launch menu bar hint so users know Veil lives behind the eye icon at the top of the screen. Added display language settings: follow macOS, Simplified Chinese, or English. Updated camera permission copy plus menu bar and Settings text so face enrollment, face auto-unlock, and away auto-shield are easier to find and understand.
