Folklore: Save Family Stories
Your stories, all in one place
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Your photos are only half the story. Folklore saves the real stories behind your family photos for future generations.
Folklore is a storytelling app where you and your family save your photos and videos along with the stories behind them - so no memory is lost.
Today, we're losing connection to those who matter most because the pictures and stories of our lives are scattered and easily forgotten. As memories fade, relationships grow distant and family histories risk being lost.
Folklore treats memories as living stories - made up of images, videos, voice notes, journal entries, locations, and people - not just files trapped in your camera roll. Folklore gathers everything in one place, making it easy to collaborate, add missing details, and see every perspective.
Folklore makes it easy to invite friends and family to not only add their perspective on shared experiences - but to add stories of their own that you may not have known about!
Explore a timeline of your and your family's history, explore the places that tie you together, find the answers you've always wanted to know.
It's a place to bring everyone together. Invite your dad and let him talk through the old photos. Ask your sister what she remembers. The people who were there fill in the parts you forgot.
What you can do with Folklore:
• Import photos and videos from your phone, iCloud, Google Photos and more
• Add the story behind any photo - in your words, voice or video
• Collaborate with family and friends for richer, fuller stories
• Find any memory instantly with search
• Explore your history by time, places, and people
• Built-in privacy controls - your stories, your rules
• Meet Lora, your family historian — ask by text or voice and she'll help you find, fill in, and revisit the stories that matter.
Memory is fleeting. Save and cherish it now - not just for yourself, but for those who come after.
Ratings & Reviews
WHAT'S IMPROVED
• Your Library leads with stories — a month-by-month mosaic of the memories you have built, with everything you have ever added one tap away under "Everything".
• Time, People and Place are places you can move through now.
• Sort your stories by when they actually happened.
• The Story tab is quieter. The story as told opens first already expanded.
• Writing, recording, filming and importing all follow the same short set of steps now.
• Added a post-import review page.
• Reviewing photos from your phone is its own step now — press and drag to pick out a whole run of them at once.
• A person's page shows that person's memories.
• When you record your side of something, you can watch the words arrive as you speak.
• After you record, the review step plays back the take you just made.
• New Loading/Splash screen
WHAT'S FIXED
• Stories show all of their photos, in the order things happened. A story built from a large import used to show only the first fifty, scattered with gaps — which looked like photos that would not load. They were always there.
• Signing in with Google works again.
• Adding a town while you are looking at Florida no longer reaches into the wrong state for it.
• Adding photos from your phone works again in the story view.
• Videos in the Library no longer replay on a loop, or keep your phone's video hardware busy while you are reading something else.
• Every Looking Back card is the same width, so the row scrolls the way a row of cards should.
• A voice answer is no longer transcribed twice.
• Family members are no longer named after the front of their email address.
• The back gesture no longer closes the keyboard out from under you while you are writing.
• The level meter moves while you record. It used to sit flat for the whole take, which made a recording that was working look like one that was not.
• Recordings get transcribed. Several things were quietly losing the words; the transcript now arrives on its own and fills itself in once the words are ready.
• Something you write about one photograph stays with that photograph, instead of also turning up as a loose scrap of text among the story's memories.
WHAT'S BEEN ADDED
• Sides. Write or record what a story means to you, in your own words — or what one photograph inside it means to you. Everyone who was there can add theirs, and they sit alongside each other, so no one person's telling has to stand in for everybody's.
• Your family's places, on a map you can walk through. Open a country, drill into a state, then into a city — every place your family has named carries its own pin, whether or not there are memories in it yet.
• Add a place from wherever you are standing, and it lands on the map straight away instead of sending you back through a form.
• Before you ask someone to contribute, you can see exactly what they will see when they open your link.
• People has a place of its own again, beside Time and Place.
