Find citations that point nowhere. Find references nobody cited. Verify against CrossRef. All on your Mac — your manuscript never leaves the device.
Citation Harmony is a focused tool for academics, researchers, and writers who need to know — quickly and privately — whether their manuscript's citations and references actually line up.
Drop in a Word document. In seconds, you'll see two clear numbers:
· Dangling citations. You wrote (Smith, 2021) but the bibliography has no Smith 2021. The text points nowhere.
· Orphan references. You have a Smith 2021 entry in your reference list, but you never actually cited it. Left over from a previous draft, or kept "just in case."
Then verify every entry against CrossRef in one click. Citation Harmony queries the world's largest academic citation database and tells you which references match published records, which are partial matches worth a closer look, and which can't be found at all — flagging possible typos, fabricated citations, or works simply not yet indexed.
Designed for how you actually work
· Triage flagged items one at a time with simple Keep / Delete / Mark-to-cite decisions.
· Export an annotated CSV you can open in Numbers or Excel and act on inside Word.
· No accounts. No telemetry. Your manuscript and decisions never leave your Mac.
Built for trust, not theatre
The dangling/orphan detection uses a transparent matching algorithm — author surname plus year, with a deliberate blocklist for common false positives (statistical test names like ADF, KPSS) and a fallback for institutional authors written with initials (e.g. J.P. Morgan).
CrossRef verification uses public DOI records when available, otherwise a structured search by surname + year + title hint. Results are clearly labeled — verified, partial match, or not found — never silently buried.
Five languages
English, 中文, Русский, Français, 日本語. Switch any time from the Language menu — your choice persists across sessions. The app also follows your system language on first launch.
Privacy by architecture
Citation Harmony is a sandboxed Mac app. It cannot read files you didn't drop in or pick. It cannot upload your document. It cannot phone home. The only network call it ever makes is to CrossRef's public API, and only when you click Verify.
This is open-source software (MIT-licensed) — the parser, the matching algorithm, the entire pipeline is auditable.
