Vurr: Espresso Companion
Grind smarter. Pull better.
Free
Vurr tells you where to set your grinder before you pull, then learns from every cup.
Pick the bean that's in your grinder and Vurr gives you a number on your grinder's own scale, with the shot time to aim for and the brew temperature. Pull, tap where the cup sat on the taste compass, and the next suggestion starts from what that shot taught it.
THE GRIND FOR TODAY'S CUP
Every suggestion starts from your own pulls of that bean, then accounts for the roast, the process, robusta in the blend, how old the bag is, the drink you're making, your water, and today's temperature and humidity. Tap "Why" to see every reason behind the number.
MADE FOR YOUR GRINDER
More than 70 grinders from 24 brands, including Niche, Eureka, Mahlkönig, Baratza, Comandante, 1Zpresso, DF, Fellow, Mazzer, Timemore and Weber Workshops. Vurr knows each one's scale and which way is finer, so the number reads the way your dial does, in marks, clicks or numbers, and tells you which way to turn. Not listed? Add yours with its own range.
ONE TAP FOR TASTE
Sour or bitter, thin or strong: tap where the cup sat on the compass and heart the ones you loved. Vurr reads which way a shot missed and moves the grind the right way.
WATCH A BAG DIAL IN
Every bag becomes a run of cups, from the first pull to the one you loved, with what Vurr learned along the way. When a bag is finished, it keeps the story of it.
YOUR BEANS AND BAGS
Scan a coffee bag and Vurr reads the label on your iPhone: name, roaster, roast, process, origin, roast date, bag size, and the roaster's recipe when it's printed. Each bag shows how many shots are left and when it's at its best.
INSIGHTS
Find your sweet spot: the shot time your loved cups have in common, which way your misses lean, the beans you love most, and how quickly you dial in a new bag.
ON YOUR WRIST
The Apple Watch app shows today's grind, times the shot, and takes the taste the moment you stop. Save it from your wrist and it's logged on your iPhone.
ALSO IN VURR
• A shot timer with a Live Activity on the Lock Screen
• A Home Screen widget with today's grind
• Flow rate on every shot, worked out from yield and time
• Search across every bean and shot
• Caffeine logged to Apple Health, iCloud backup, and export to a spreadsheet
• Use it without an account
FOR EVERY LEVEL
New to espresso? Pick your grinder and pull: Vurr starts you at a sensible number and explains as you go. Been at it for years? Vurr keeps the record of every dial-in and learns your palate.

more Doesn’t work particularly well and UI is not intuitive. Had a lot of difficulty finding where to add bags of coffee and additional shots because the UI is so clunky. The app seemed to forget I had already used it when I reopened it the following days. The benefits provided aren’t very useful. The app’s advice is very rudimentary and it takes longer to enter information about your previous shot than just dialing in a roast yourself without the help from AI. They shouldn’t be charging $22 a year for an incomplete app.

Vurr 1.6 is a redesign from the first screen to the last.
• Taste compass: tap where the cup sat (sour or bitter, thin or strong) and heart the ones you loved. It replaces stars for new shots; older shots keep theirs.
• Apple Watch: time the shot, give the taste, and save it from your wrist. It's logged on your iPhone without opening the app.
• The roaster's recipe: scanning a bag now reads the printed shot time, temperature and ratio, and Vurr follows them until your own pulls take over. You can also add them on the bean page.
• Smarter starting points: shot times now follow your ratio rather than your dose, so smaller baskets get the right window, and dark roasts and robusta blends get warmer brew temperatures.
• Suggestions straight away: no more waiting screen. Each one says how far and which way to turn, and "Why" explains every adjustment.
• Your shelf: open bags drawn as bags with the shots left, finished bags kept with their story, and a dial-in run for every bag.
• Insights, rethought: your sweet spot, which way your misses lean, your best beans, and how fast you dial in.
• Search: find any bean, roaster, taste or grind from Home.
• A shorter log sheet: the pull first, everything else one tap away. Editing a shot uses the same sheet.
• Simpler setup: one question, your grinder, and you're pulling.
• Tidier beans: two beans with the same name from different roasters get an offer to merge them.
• Settings: one reminder time, and the reference bean now sits under "How Vurr suggests".
1.16 2d ago
It trusts your taste now. Rate a shot 5 stars and Vurr gives you that grind again. No more second-guessing a cup you loved because the timer looked wrong. A shot you rated well is never "corrected".
A smarter shot clock. Pre-infusion now counts toward your time, so a long soak no longer gets your shot called fast. Time is judged by your ratio, not your dose, so a little 11.7 g single and a big 18 g double get the same fair hearing.
It knows what morning it is. A cold 6 a.m. kitchen and a warm afternoon aren't the same coffee day. Vurr now learns how your grind actually shifts with the weather, the time of day and that first shot after a break. Then it adjusts from the shot you loved, not from a textbook.
It watches your bag age. As the beans settle in, Vurr learns how your grind drifts through each bag, and keeps up with you.
"How did it run?" finally matters. Tap Ran fast or Ran slow after a shot, and your next suggestion actually moves. No timer needed.
Scan more, type less. Photograph a bag and Vurr now reads the roast date (or works it out from the best-before date), plus altitude, variety, decaf and bag size. A rescan of a bean you already have even starts your new bag for you.
Honest when it's guessing. New bean, no history? Vurr gives you a likely range and tells you which way to go if it runs fast or slow. Once it knows your setup, you just get the number.
Ask Siri. "How many shots are left in Vurr?" "Rate my last shot four stars in Vurr." Hands full of portafilter, no problem.
Good morning, here's your grind. The daily reminder now leads with the number to start at, and one tap opens your shot log.
Starting points from fellow baristas. Opening a new bean? See where other people with your grinder started it. Off by default, never anything personal, and only ever a group of at least three people.
Apple Health, if you like. Log each shot's caffeine automatically, worked out from your dose. Off unless you turn it on.
Squashed:
Niche Zero owners got a starting number from the wrong dial scale.
The grind number could vanish in light mode.
Beginner shots quietly logged a yield of 23 g nobody entered.
Save sometimes failed without saying why.
The number pad had no way to close.
Tapping a grinder could double up.
A camera-access error now shows a clear message with a link to Settings.
Same espresso obsession, fewer surprises. Pull one and see.

New here? Vurr now opens. Some fresh installs of 1.5.0 got stuck on a "Storage Unavailable" screen. That's fixed, and if it happened to you, just update and you're in. Sorry for the bitter first sip.
Sharper bag reading. Process names on labels are now matched as whole words, so a stray "at" no longer turns your washed coffee into a natural.
1.14 Oct 6
The "wait, it knows that?" update
Your grind, on your wrist
Add Vurr to your watch face and your grind is right there. When the shot's done, tap Stop, give it stars before your first sip, and your phone fills in the log.
Dialling in, live
Opened a new bag? The Journal now keeps count: shot 1, shot 2… right up to "Dialled in on shot 3. Faster than your usual 4." We'll pretend we didn't see shots 1 and 2.
Your best recipe, remembered
Every bean now keeps the recipe behind your shots: grind, dose, yield, time and temperature. No more squinting at old notes.
The shelf
Bought a bag you haven't opened yet? Put it on the shelf. Vurr keeps an eye on the roast date and tells you when to open it, before its best days are behind it.
Insights got opinions
- Explored: the origins and processes you've tried, and the ones you haven't. Kenya is waiting.
- Taste vs Time: proof, from your own shots, that sour means fast. Or, sometimes, that it doesn't.
- What the data says: "Grind naturals finer." "Buy washed next time." "Finish Bergsonne this week." Each one shows its working.
- Does the prediction land? We grade ourselves on how often a shot at the suggested grind runs in the predicted time. Brave, we know.
- Most pulled: your go-to bean. Not always your best one, and we won't judge.
One grind, everywhere
Journal, Suggest, the home-screen widget, your watch: same bean, same number, every time. Live somewhere high up? Your altitude now tunes your brew temperature, and no longer gets mistaken for where your beans grew.
Two devices, one history
Rate a shot on your iPad and your iPhone knows. Finish a bag on one and it's finished on the other. The newest edit always wins.
Take your data with you
Export every shot as a spreadsheet. Pivot tables not included.

VURR IS NOW COMPLETELY FREE
Every feature, for everyone. No trial, no Pro tier, no paywall waiting to ambush you three taps in. Insights, bag scanning, the whole thing. Enjoy.
IT ACTUALLY OPENS NOW
The app used to sit on the logo screen doing admin nobody asked for. That's fixed. And on the rare slow start you get a real loading screen instead of a frozen coffee bean and a growing sense of doubt.
TIME YOUR SHOT INSTEAD OF GUESSING IT
Tap to start, tap to stop. Your grind advice leans hard on flow rate, and "uhh, about 26 seconds?" was doing a suspicious amount of load-bearing work. Eventually, we will add functionality to connect to your bluetooth scales
THE DIAL STOPS ARGUING WITH YOU
If you override the suggestion to the same number every morning, Vurr takes the hint — and remembers it per bean, per time of day.
SHARPER COFFEE SCIENCE
Sour AND bitter in one shot now reads as channeling, instead of cancelling out into a shrug. Extraction targets use your actual shot history. A 40-second choke gets the correction it was screaming for.
BEANS GOT A PROPER HOME
One place for every bean and bag: freshness, grams left, shots remaining. Edit a bean's whole profile in one go instead of one field at a time. Search and filter your library. And a back button, which — look, it's there now.
DUPLICATE BEANS, SORTED
Scanning "BERLINER KAFFEERÖSTEREI" and "Berliner Kaffeerösterei" no longer creates two beans quietly splitting one history. Already got duplicates? Vurr will point them out.
A HUNDRED SMALL THINGS
Brew temp and flow strategy stop forgetting themselves. Undo when you remove a bean. Taps that used to land on nothing now land on something. Haptics. Fewer boxes. More coffee
1.12 Aug 26
Light mode grew up
Dark mode was always the good-looking twin. Light mode used to be dark mode with the lights left on — washed out, gold that never quite glowed.
Now it's got its own everything: a porcelain palette that lets gold actually be gold, a background that shifts temperature with the time of day, and a main button that's a deep-roast island of dark in a bright room. It looks expensive. Flip to Light in Settings and have a look.
One coffee, one opinion
Your last shot choked. It ran slow. Every screen agreed it ran slow — and then Vurr cheerfully told you to grind finer. Cool. Very helpful.
Fixed. The dial, the receipt, and the flow note used to be three coworkers who never spoke. They've had a meeting. If your shot ran slow, everything says so, and the recommendation always lands on the correct side of the pull you actually just made.
Your shots outrank our guesses
Vurr makes some assumptions about your grinder before it's seen a single espresso. One of them had been quietly overruling real shots you pulled with your real hands. It's been put back in its place. Guesses advise. Your coffee decides.
It finally notices a choke
A shot gasping through the puck is choking whether you rated it one star or five. We used to only listen once you'd dialled it in — exactly when you didn't need the help. Now the obvious stuff gets flagged from your very first messy shot.
Two backwards tips, quietly reversed
"Under-extracted — try a coarser grind" was advice from the upside-down. It's the right way up now. We won't discuss how long it wasn't.
1.11 Jul 24
The "We Fixed The Scanner" Update
The bag scanner actually scans now. We hunted the freeze bug through five layers of iOS and won. Point it at a bag, tap the checkmark, get your dial-in. Revolutionary concept, we know.
It reads labels like a barista, not a robot. Blend names, multi-origin lists (Brazil / Colombia / Honduras — hello!), German labels, Rösterei names, even "Déjà Vu" with all its accents. And the more labels it sees, the smarter it gets.
Your beans age. Vurr knows. Add a roast date and get a freshness countdown to the peak window — plus a notification the morning your beans hit their prime. Fresh bags, aging bags, opened bags, decaf: the grind suggestion adjusts for all of it.
The dial feels like a dial now. Silky drag, a satisfying rubber-band at the ends, and hold the +/− buttons to speed-spin across the range. Your thumb will notice.
Chirp calibration got its moment. Sound waves, haptics, the works. Listening to your burrs kiss has never looked this good.
Hey Siri, what's my grind? Ask Siri for your dial-in, log a shot, or jump straight to suggestions — without opening the app. Shortcuts fans, go wild.
Plus: friendlier in-app messages instead of system popups, roast dates in any format you type them (15.01, Jan 15, we get it), and a double-shot of stability fixes.
Now go pull something delicious.
1.10 Jul 8
The engine got smarter. The trial got longer. And we stopped pestering you.
Smarter suggestions — fixed a bug where one great shot could anchor your grind too high and never let go. The engine now learns in both directions, so if your last pull said “go finer,” it actually goes finer.
Honest breakdown panel — every delta that affects your final suggestion is now visible. No more hidden adjustments. What you see adds up to what you get.
60-day free trial — we extended the trial from 14 to 60 days. Dialling in a new bean takes time. Now you have it.
We’ll only ask once — if you’ve had a great pull and the engine nailed it, we might ask for a review. Once. At the right moment. Never randomly.
We won’t remind you about subscribing until day 54 — enjoy the first 53 days without interruption. When the time comes, you’ll get three gentle nudges, not a wall.
Keep pulling. We’ll keep learning.
1.9 Jun 30
Turns out the bag scanner had stage fright.
Fixed: the bag scanner now actually delivers your scan — previously, tapping the checkmark after scanning would leave the app frozen mid-thought, camera button dead, image gone nowhere. That’s fixed. Scan, confirm, done.
Keep pulling. We’ll keep learning.
1.8 Jun 28
Your beans are getting older, and now Vurr actually cares.
Fresh bean energy — Vurr now factors in how many days off roast your bag is, and nudges your grind accordingly. Day 2 jitters, peak window confidence, day 25 “let’s be honest” adjustments. It’s all in there, and it’ll tell you why.
Scan your bag like a pro — swapped in Apple’s own document scanner for cleaner, sharper bag captures. Less squinting at blurry roast dates.
Prettier extraction charts — your session history now speaks the same visual language as your shot deep dive. Gold diamonds, green circles, the whole language of a good (or humbling) shot.
Widget glow-up — tightened up the home screen widget so nothing feels cramped or floaty anymore, and the Lock Screen circular widget now shows a proper gauge ring around your grind number, just like Apple’s own weather and tide widgets. A random number floating in a circle deserved better.
The usual under-the-hood tidying so things keep running smoothly.
Keep pulling. We’ll keep learning.
1.7 Jun 21
The engine is now fully transparent.
Previously, 13 hidden deltas were silently influencing your grind suggestion without explanation — shot timing, ratio drift, taste tags, altitude, oiliness, dose, puck fill, brew temp. All now visible as named rows in the breakdown panel. What you see adds up exactly to what the engine suggests.
Lungo pulls no longer get told to grind finer. High-ratio shots now get the right advice — stop the shot earlier, not adjust the grind.
Pre-infusion time is now correctly factored into extraction analysis. A 35-second shot with 10 seconds of pre-infusion is 25 seconds of actual extraction. The app now knows the difference.
The Mahlkönig E64 WS joins the catalogue with its native micron scale.
1.6 Jun 7
Your engine, sharpened.
The suggestion now anchors to your best shot — not the average of every dial-in attempt that got you there. If you pulled a 5-star at 3.2, that’s where next session starts.
Flow rate advice and ratio commentary no longer contradict each other. One clear verdict per shot, in plain language.
Pre-infusion time is now factored into extraction analysis. A 35s shot with 10s pre-infusion is 25s of actual extraction — and the app now knows the difference.
High-ratio pulls (Lungo territory) no longer get told to grind finer. The advice matches the actual problem.
Grinder dial ranges corrected across the full catalog. Custom scales including aftermarket wheels now work correctly on every screen.
Draft persistence improvements — your in-progress shot survives even force-kills.
1.5 Jun 6
Your grinder has been going to therapy. Here’s what it learned.
The engine got smarter
Suggestions now anchor to your best shot, not the average of every dial-in disaster. Your 5-star pulls finally get the respect they deserve.
Flow rate knows what it wants
Five clear bands from choking to very fast, with advice that actually agrees with itself. No more “right on target — also please go coarser.”
PID recommendations, researched
Temperature suggestions are now backed by actual espresso science. Dark roast gets 90°C. Light roast gets 95°C. Your machine gets fewer arguments.
Grinder catalog, corrected
Mignon, Niche Zero, DF64, Comandante, Lagom P64 — all dial ranges verified against real hardware. The DF64 is no longer pretending it only goes to 6.
Edit shot = Log shot
The edit screen finally looks like the log screen. Consistency is a feature.
Draft persistence
Started logging a shot and got distracted by your cat? Your draft survives. Even force-kills.
Ratio gets context
1:1.97 now tells you what it means — Normale, Ristretto, or Lungo. Numbers with personality.
Lots of small fixes
Spacing, dots, empty tiles, contradicting insights, stale suggestions. The kind of polish that makes a good app feel great.
1.4 Jun 1
Your drafts finally have commitment issues (fixed)
Walk away mid-shot log, force-quit the app, switch to something else — your in-progress shot now survives all of it. Come back and pick up exactly where you left off, in the same screen you left from. Even if you were mid-pull on the suggest screen. No more lost data, no more re-entering everything from scratch.
Your bag math got an audit
Turns out the first shot you pulled from a new bag was living rent-free — never counted, never deducted. A full ghost shot. We caught it, evicted it, and your "shots remaining" now starts counting from shot one like it always should have.
No more accidental fresh starts
If you tap "Brew Again" on a shot while you've got an unsaved draft for the same bean, we'll ask — resume the draft or start fresh? Your call, not ours.
1.3 May 31
Some of you were greeted with a blank screen instead of your morning espresso. Not ideal. We've fixed the thing that was causing that and sent it far, far away. You're good now. Go make a shot.
1.2 May 28
Your grinder, finally understood.
One dial. Three taps. Fully calibrated.
Set your chirp point, your finest espresso, and your coarsest — all on a single dial that looks exactly like your physical grinder. Same numbers, same direction, same feel. Spin to each position and tap to confirm. Vurr builds your espresso range visually as you go. No typing, no guessing.
Add any grinder. Even the weird one.
Not in the catalogue? Add it yourself. Name it, set the dial range, pick flat or conical, set your coarser direction. Vurr starts learning from your first shot. Flat burrs get a slightly more assertive cold-start suggestion. Conical, a touch finer. Small difference that compounds over dozens of pulls.
Flow rate. No extra input needed.
Every shot now shows your flow rate in grams per second — calculated automatically from your yield and time. Colour-coded against the ideal range for your roast level. A fast shot that still reads 1.8 g/s? Normal. A shot that reads 3.2 g/s? Go finer. The number tells you before your palate has to.
Smarter suggestions.
Log pre-infusion time on Slayer, 3→9→6, or pre-infusion profiles — Vurr strips it from your extraction time so the engine reads the shot correctly. Flow rate now helps distinguish a grind problem from a technique problem. Fast shot with normal flow? Vurr holds the grind and flags puck prep instead.
Three new grinders.
Mazzer Philos, Etzinger ETZmax LM, and Timemore Sculptor 078S — bringing the catalogue to 52 grinders across 20 brands, all pre-configured with the right dial range, direction, and espresso window.
Your draft survives.
Start logging a shot, switch to your scale app, come back — your data is waiting. Tap restore and finish. Only fully saved shots reach the suggestion engine.
Settings save themselves.
Adjust your chirp point, tweak your espresso window, update your reference bean — everything saves as you go. No button, nothing lost.
Cleaner bag scanning.
Chocolate, nuts, caramel - flavour notes stay out of the bean name field.
1.1 May 27
Vurr 1.6 is a redesign from the first screen to the last.
