offGrd: offline messenger
Message without internet
Only for iPhone
Free · Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS.
the crowd that kills your signal is the thing that carries your message. no towers, no servers, no internet. offGrd works where nothing else does.
your phone already has everything it needs to talk to the phone next to it. offGrd skips the cell towers and Wi-Fi routers entirely, connecting you directly to people nearby.
no signal at the festival? doesn't matter. dead zone on the trail? doesn't matter. offGrd works exactly where your carrier doesn't.
more your crew, sorted before you get there.
invite links that actually open
tap an invite and offGrd opens right on it. share a group over whatsapp or messages and whoever taps it is in. no standing next to each other, no codes to type, no "can you read this out to me".
groups that keep up
add someone and everyone sees them. remove the ones who drifted off. and you can hand a group over now, so it doesn't quietly die when whoever made it goes home early.
ticks you can trust
a message that got through stops pretending it failed. one that didn't stops pretending it worked. small thing. big difference to how much you squint at your screen at 1am.
nothing lost in your pocket
messages that turn up while the app is closed now hold on properly until your phone has really put them somewhere safe.
your history stays yours
your messages are locked to your phone now, not just on the way to you. turn on backup and they follow you to a new phone. leave it off and they stay put.
harder to meddle with
nobody nearby can quietly convince your phone that a message landed when it didn't. it keeps trying until it really has.
steadier all round
we squashed a bug that could close the app on you mid-conversation. rude. phones also hold onto each other better now, so people stop blinking in and out like a
dodgy fairy light.
still no towers. still no servers. still works when everything else has given up.
1.2.13 Aug 28
sort your crew out before you even get there.
invite links for groups
share a group with a link — whatsapp, airdrop, carrier pigeon. whoever opens it is in. no need to be standing next to each other, so you can round everyone up the night before and walk in like you've got it together.
add people before you've met
your own invite link works the same way. share it once and you're connected the moment you're both in range. friends before first contact.
groups that keep up
add someone and everyone sees them. remove the ones who've drifted off. hand admin to whoever's actually doing the organising — you know who it is. it isn't you.
see when a message was really sent
in a big crowd your message might do a lap of the venue before it finds anyone. now you'll see when it was sent, not just when it turned up.
steadier all round
we squashed a bug that could close the app on you mid-conversation. rude. we also tidied up how phones spot each other nearby, so people stop blinking in and out like a dodgy fairy light.

1.2.8 Aug 23
no more "failed" on a message that arrived.
last version taught your message to travel by human. this one teaches the receipt to come back the same way. if the person carrying it walks back to you, your delivered tick walks back with them, even if you and the recipient never end up in the same place.
your old chats stopped disappearing.
quiet conversations used to lose their history when you reopened the app. it was all still there — offGrd just wasn't loading it. now every chat keeps its own history, however long it's been since you last opened it.
offGrd stopped talking over itself.
it was sending messages back down the same path they arrived on. it doesn't anymore. less chatter on the air in a packed crowd, same delivery.
if someone tries to be someone else, you'll know.
offGrd already blocked impersonation attempts silently. now it tells you, right in the chat, so you can check their PIN in person before you trust it.
a cleaner people list.
every row said "on the mesh". you're in offGrd, everyone's on the mesh. it's gone.
1.2.7 Aug 14
offGrd 1.2.6
your message now travels by human.
if someone's out of range, offGrd hands your message to
whoever's heading their way. it hops person to person until
it lands. no towers, no internet — and now, not even
everyone in the same place at the same time.
the crash is gone.
the app could die when you reopened it. we found it. it's fixed.
notifications behave now.
one notification per chat, not a wall of them. they clear when
you open the chat. and you'll see the actual message far more
often instead of "new encrypted message".
same name? no problem.
two people called Arjun no longer knock each other off your
nearby list. everyone shows up as themselves.
group chats got unstuck.
messages no longer sit on "sending" forever, and tap-to-retry
actually retries.
a calmer backup screen.
the wall of warning text is now one tap away — and the part
that matters shows up right when you restore.
1.2.6 Aug 12
People, in one place
No more flipping between Friends / Requests / Nearby tabs. Everything's a single list now, ordered by what needs you first: Friends, then Requests, then Nearby. Sections you don't have simply don't show up — no more empty screens.
See everyone's offGrd PIN
Every person in the People list now shows their 6-character PIN right next to their name, so you can match it to a PIN someone reads out to you.
Cleaner chats
Removed the odd circle around the back button.
Tap a chat's title to see more about that person — a hint now tells you so.
The message box is properly rounded again, and stays that way when your message runs to several lines.
Correct version number
The version shown in Settings is now read from the actual build, so it can't drift out of date.

Messaging fixes — the important one first
• Fixed a bug that left the send button greyed out with some
contacts, even when they were standing right next to you. If
you couldn't reply to someone, this release fixes it.
• Messages now retry within seconds instead of waiting. Sending
feels immediate again, especially in a crowd.
• Adding someone works the first time. Requests and accepts no
longer get stuck on "waiting to accept" — even if one of you
closes the app halfway through.
• Group messages now reach everyone in the group, including
people you haven't met directly yet.
Remove Contact
"Remove Chat" is now "Remove Contact", and it does what it says.
Removing someone disconnects you both — neither of you can
message until a new request is sent and accepted.
Stability
• Fixed several crashes, including one that could stop the app
from opening after certain messages arrived.
• Faster startup when you have a long chat history.
1.2.4 Jul 29
Bug fixes and performance improvements to keep you connected when nothing else is. Thanks for using offGrd — more updates on the way.
1.2.3 Jul 26
• Delivery while backgrounded — your friend's phone confirms your message the moment it arrives, even if offGrd isn't open on their screen.
• Bluetooth delivery got tougher — messages received over Bluetooth while the app was in the background used to wait for a retry; now they're captured instantly and waiting for you when you open the app.
• Group chats now notify you in the background, titled with the group name — tap to jump straight into the thread.
• Truthful ticks — a message only shows "delivered" when it was actually read-able on the other end. No more false confirmations.
• Sharper presence — reopening the app now shows who's really still on the mesh, instead of ghosts of people who left.
• Stronger identity protection — your encryption keys are now locked behind a hardware-backed key in the iOS Keychain. Your identity migrates automatically; nothing to do.
• Squashed a rare crash during Wi-Fi handoffs in dense crowds, and fixed a stuck loading screen after a failed start.
Get your squad on this version — background delivery works best when everyone has it.
1.2.2 Jul 10
Connect requests, fixed and faster
• Requests now arrive instantly — and you get a notification the moment someone wants to connect
• Get notified when your request is accepted, so you can start chatting right away
• If someone already sent you a request, you'll see Accept/Decline instead of sending a duplicate
• Cancelling a request now actually stops it from being delivered
• Delete your account any time from Settings — removes your PIN, chats, and iCloud backup
Polish, everywhere
• Full VoiceOver support and bigger tap targets across the app
• Respects your Reduce Motion and text size settings
• Sharper icons, cleaner light mode, and smoother chat scrolling
• Faster message saving and more accurate hop counts on the mesh
1.2.1 (1) Jul 4
Connecting with people nearby is now instant and reliable.
• Connection requests send the moment you tap — no more retries or restarts. The other person sees your request right away, and your chat shows up immediately marked "pending" until they accept.
• Unread message badges now count correctly so you never miss what's piled up.
• Faster and smoother across the board — messages and status updates are quicker, especially in a busy crowd.
Thanks for testing offGrd. Keep the mesh alive.
