v1.1 — chop bank, virtual SL-1200 turntable deck, AU3 plugin chain, offline render. The Mac-side workstation for the E-mu SP-1200.
The E-mu SP-1200, released in 1987, defined the texture of an entire era of music. Its 26.04 kHz, 12-bit grit became the signature sound of golden-age hip-hop and remains in active use four decades later.
SP-1200 Sample Dump is a focused macOS workstation for the SP-1200. It speaks the MMA MIDI Sample Dump Standard the SP-1200 ships with — pulling samples off the SP-1200 and pushing audio files onto any pad — implemented byte-and-timing exact per the specification published by E-mu in the SP-1200 owner's manual. Around that protocol it adds a virtual SL-1200 turntable for high-fidelity audition, a 32-slot chop bank with per-slot pitch and RPM, and AU3 effect plugin hosting on the source or per slot.
WHAT IT DOES
Receive any pad. Click RECEIVE, trigger a sound dump from the SP-1200's front panel, and the app captures the full sample with the complete ACK handshake. A save panel opens automatically with waveform preview, audition playback, and format / rate / channel options.
Send to any pad. Pick a destination Bank (A-D) and Sound (1-8), select any audio file, and the app handles 12-bit conversion, resampling to 26.04 kHz, and the multi-packet upload with handshake.
DAW-standard editing. The send-prep panel shows the entire waveform. Click + drag to paint a selection, or drag start/end markers independently. Pinch to zoom down to a single sample per pixel. ZC Snap aligns edges to zero crossings. Stereo files show L | M | R picker; the wave, audition, and what gets sent all follow the choice live.
32-slot chop bank. REC captures the live deck position into the next empty slot — fire-and-forget, audition keeps spinning. Each slot remembers its audio, region, pitch, and RPM. The bank's 10 s pitched-seconds budget mirrors the SP-1200's hardware memory. Save and load banks as .sp12bank files.
Virtual SL-1200 turntable. Audition with a 3D pitch fader (±8 %), 33 1/3 / 45 RPM toggle, motor physics on / off, tonearm cue + scratch. Detach into a free-floating window.
AU3 effect plugins on source or per slot. The right column hosts AU3 effects with realtime audition. Per-plugin bypass plus master ALL / BYP. Native plugin views in floating windows. Stable post-effect VU meter. With the source chain active, REC bakes the chain into the captured slot. The RENDER button bakes the slot's chain into the slot bytes via offline rendering, then auto-bypasses every plugin.
Freeze Pitch. Bake a slot's pitch + RPM into its bytes via a 32-tap polyphase Kaiser-windowed sinc resampler. After freeze, layer fresh pitch on top to push past the SP-1200's hardware ±8 % limit.
Wide format support. Reads WAV, AIFF, CAF, MP3, AAC, M4A, FLAC, Apple Lossless. Writes WAV (16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit float), AIFF (16/24), FLAC (16/24), Apple Lossless (16/24), CAF (16), RAW (16). Arbitrary sample rates.
UNDER THE HOOD
Full ACK / NAK handshake on every packet, byte-and-timing accurate to the spec.
26.04 kHz, 12-bit complement-offset-binary encoding, exactly as the SP-1200 stores samples internally.
Float32 throughout the editor at the source's native sample rate. The 12-bit / 26.04 kHz crunch happens only at the SDS send boundary.
App Sandbox enabled. File access limited to user-selected files. No network entitlement. Library validation enforced — third-party AU3 plugins host via XPC sandbox bridge.
WHAT YOU NEED
A Mac running macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon.
Any class-compliant USB MIDI interface connected to the SP-1200's MIDI IN and MIDI OUT.
An E-mu SP-1200 with samples loaded into the destination pads. The SP-1200's hardware requires non-empty destination pads before accepting a Sample Dump Standard upload — sample anything (silence works) into the target pad first. The full procedure is in the in-app Help.

v1.1 — workstation update.
NEW FEATURES
DAW-standard waveform selection editing. Click + drag to paint selections, drag marker handles independently, double-click select all, single click drops cue. Real-turntable Stop preserves position.
32-slot chop bank (A1-D8) with REC capture, per-slot pitch / RPM, Freeze Pitch offline render, .sp12bank file format.
Virtual SL-1200 turntable deck for audition: 3D pitch fader (±8 %), 33 1/3 / 45 RPM, motor physics, tonearm cue + scratch, side-swap and detach into a free-floating window.
AU3 effect plugin hosting on the source signal or per slot. Per-plugin bypass, master ALL / BYP, native plugin GUI hosting, post-effect VU meter, wet capture (REC bakes the source chain into the slot bytes), offline RENDER bake (bakes the slot's chain into slot.audio in place, then auto-bypasses).
Multiple sends per session — the send panel now stays open after a successful transfer so you can ship more samples without reopening.
Help book rewritten for the workstation feature set.
