Attest is a macOS app for reviewing academic and scientific manuscripts without ever uploading them. The full text of your document stays on your Mac. You get citation verification, missing-reference discovery, and a full suite of editorial checks, all built around a simple promise - your work never leaves your device. Open a Word .docx or a publisher proof PDF, and Attest reads it locally. Nothing is sent to a server unless you explicitly choose a cloud check, and even then only the minimum necessary leaves your machine.
Run a complete review pass across seven focused tabs.
- Citations. Verify every reference in your bibliography against CrossRef and PubMed. Attest parses authors, title, year, DOI, and PMID, then flags entries that do not resolve. Only bibliography entries are checked online. Your manuscript text stays on this device.
- Find Citations. Discover landmark and highly-cited PubMed papers that are relevant to your work but missing from your reference list. Attest maps your text to official MeSH headings on-device and sends only those terms to PubMed. No sentences, paragraphs, or files are transmitted. Matching article IDs go to NIH iCite only to fetch citation counts.
- Editorial. Surface structural and substantive issues a reviewer would catch before you submit.
Statistics. Review reported values and quantitative claims for consistency.
- Clarity. Tighten dense or ambiguous passages so your argument reads cleanly.
- Grammar. Catch the errors a final proof should remove.
- Formatting. Check that your manuscript meets the structural expectations of a clean submission.
No API key is required. With no key set, Attest runs fully offline heuristics on the entire document. Add a Claude or Gemini API key in Settings when you want deeper cloud analysis. The choice is always yours, and it is always explicit.
Attest reads track-change metadata directly from your file. See author and part-level revision summaries, inspect comments, and review the editing history of a document. Understand who changed what, and when, without leaving the app.
Attach supporting files for richer review. Add prior accepted, revised, or rejected manuscripts as context for a session. With a zero-data-retention key, their full text informs cloud checks. Supporting files are never used for offline heuristics.
Export a structured JSON record of your analysis. Track changes, edit-style heuristics, submission-readiness signals, author and part summaries, comments, and the full Reviewer Assist output are all available to copy with a single click.
Attest is built for researchers who take confidentiality seriously. Your manuscript is read locally, mapped to a bundled NLM vocabulary on your Mac, and never uploaded. You retain full editorial authority at every step. Suggestions are assistance, not decisions.
