MuteMic is a system-wide microphone control that lives in your menu bar. One click — or one keystroke — and your mic is muted. The icon always reflects the truth.
Whether you're on back-to-back meetings, recording, or just want to know who's listening, MuteMic puts honest, predictable mic control one click away.
FEATURES
• One-click mute and unmute of your default input device, right from the menu bar.
• Choose what a single click on the menu bar icon does:
– Toggle mute/unmute
– Open the menu
– Right-click always opens the menu. Configured via Settings → General → Behavior
• Four menu bar icon styles to fit your taste: Classic mic, Dot, ON AIR (broadcast caps), and On Air (broadcast title case). Each icon shows three states — muted, idle (live), and in use and adapts cleanly to both light and dark mode.
• Live "In use by" panel to see exactly which apps are using your microphone right now, with their real icons. macOS background services like Siri and dictation can be hidden with a single toggle.
• Two global hotkeys, fully customizable:
– Mute toggle (default ⇧⌘M): press anywhere to flip mute on or off.
– Push-to-talk (default ⌥.): while muted, hold to talk and release to mute again. Does nothing if the mic is already unmuted.
• Reliable push-to-talk fail-safe — even if macOS drops the key-release event, MuteMic re-mutes the mic for you.
• Configurable hotkeys via an intuitive capture UI with live modifier preview, duplicate-binding prevention, and full support for any keyboard layout. No Accessibility permission required.
• Smart quit handling — by default MuteMic unmutes the mic on quit so you don't get caught muted later. A first-time dialog explains the choice and remembers your preference.
• Launch at login, on by default. Always reflects what System Settings actually has set.
• Settings window with three tabs: General, Hotkeys, and About — every preference within reach.
• Light and dark mode aware throughout, including the menu bar icon and Settings UI.
• Preserves your microphone input volume after unmuting
PRIVACY
MuteMic does not record audio. It does not connect to the internet. It does not collect, transmit, or store any data — your microphone activity stays on your machine.
FREE TO USE
MuteMic is free, with no ads, no trials, no paywalls. If it has saved you from an embarrassing hot mic, you can leave an optional tip via Settings → About. Tipping is entirely optional and unlocks nothing; it's just a way to say thanks if the app is helpful to you.
