Finally remember Japanese — not just recognize it. Every word in Kairou arrives as a complete memory: an illustration, a real example sentence, and clear Japanese audio. Meaning, sound, and context land together — so words stick, instead of dissolving the moment the quiz ends. Start with the 400 most common words, free. When you've worked through a set, add the next. Kairou Premium opens the full catalog: over 3,000 words spanning JLPT N5 through N3. WHY IT STICKS - Every card anchors three ways: image, sentence, sound - Real Japanese sentences, never isolated word lists - Kanji breakdowns show the characters inside every word - Words arrive in sets ordered by frequency — the Japanese you'll actually meet comes first STUDY YOUR WAY - Flashcards and guided study sets - Quizzes that check what's actually sticking - Reading mode with word-by-word sentences - Listening mode for walks and commutes — study without looking - Kana reference for hiragana and katakana - A quiet garden that grows each day you show up NO STRINGS - Everything works offline — words, audio, and images live on your phone - No account, no sign-up, no ads - A calm alternative to noisy, game-like language apps FOR YOU IF YOU - Recognize words in the app but blank on them in the wild - Want to hear Japanese as you study, not just read it - Are building toward JLPT N5–N3 vocabulary - Want studying to feel like a ritual, not a slot machine The first 400 words are free with every study mode included. Kairou Premium unlocks all 3,000+ words for $5.99/year, with a free two-week trial. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the period; manage anytime in your Apple Account settings. Helped with everyday Japanese

I found the phrases to be really helpful in navigating daily activities like going to the store or ordering food. The pictures are a nice touch but I like to use the function without the pictures and just listen to the phrases to memorize the words and correct pronunciation.

Hmm…cool app…Is it grammar for beginners tho?

Just started trying this out for reading practice. I really like the no ads, no data, no login and just general no pressure style. Might redefine beginner level but definitely good for background study. That may be kind of its style tho, gotta dig in there to learn. To be fair the description doesn’t mention grammar, more about words, but when I hear learn Japanese by reading seems like grammar lessons are part of that, and if I was still an absolute just learned kana level beginner I might have been a bit confused. Hate to be that person since it is such a nice app. Maybe I’m doing this wrong but had to set it at foundations. Introductory vocab but still some words I don’t know.
