Smart Telescope Planner
Smart telescope nights on iOS
Free · In‑App Purchases
Free to download with a 20-day free trial. Plan smart telescope nights with saved sites, telescope limits, sky filters, planets, comets and timed observing plans.
BigSky Planner helps smart telescope users prepare an observing night before they head outside.
Save your observing sites, set up your smart telescope, filter a bundled target catalog, and build a timed plan for the night. Target cards show magnitude, object type, first view time, time in view, azimuth and altitude. Details adds capture guidance for your default telescope, with Min, Opt and Best integration times and filter-aware notes.
Key features
- Save and reuse observing sites, and mark a default
- Smart telescope profiles with altitude, timing and Equatorial Mode limits for each model
- Filter targets by catalog, magnitude, object type, altitude and azimuth, with exact catalog-number search
- Planets, the Moon and comets
- One target card per object, with its common name
- Build Plan places every selected target across its Clear Sky, so the times overlap. Balance Plan and Use Priority set the time shares

New
- Telescope limits by model: altitude, timing and Equatorial Mode limits for each smart telescope.
- Every target card shows how long the target is in view tonight.
- Build Plan schedules targets through your Clear Sky areas, and unused time inside a Clear Sky span goes back to the targets beside it.
- A capture shorter than 30 minutes shows "A Capture Needs a Change", with a longer seat or a replacement that you can accept or decline.
- An object listed under several catalog numbers appears as one target card with its common name.
- Weather defaults to Automatic: NOAA in the United States and MET Norway elsewhere, with no account or key. Open-Meteo works with your own key.
- Back up on iPhone or iPad and restore on a Mac or Windows PC, or the other way around.
- More accurate planet and Moon positions.
- A Credits page in Set Up.
- Text follows your iPhone or iPad text size, and short labels stay whole at the largest sizes.
- The illustrated user manual has a new Troubleshooting section.
Fixes
- A New Moon no longer draws as a solid white disc on the Weather tab.
- Apply Filters works before you set a magnitude; the magnitude limit now starts at 17.
- The number keyboard has a Done key and no longer covers Apply Filters.
- Searching for a catalog ID such as NGC 705 lists the exact match first.
- Choosing Solar System and Comets together shows both the planets and the comets.
- Telescope times fill in at launch and after you change the date or telescope.
- New users now start with deep-sky targets selected, and Apply Filters asks you to choose a target type if none is ticked.
- The location permission message now uses the app's name, BigSky Planner.
21.3 Oct 12
Update ABELL targets, cleaner cascade, other fixes to the UI to make planning easer. Repaired cascade issues
21.2 Sep 22
Fixes and improvements in this release:
- Mid-plan Fill Gaps can insert a target into an open cascade window.
- Removing a middle Planner row reflows the remaining cascade so later starts stay aligned.
- Editing an end time cascades later starts forward.
- Build Plan timing cascades respect target visibility and telescope windows, including after-midnight observing.
- Multi-target cascade planning is more reliable for typical Clear Sky sessions.
- Checked targets keep a compact Remove from Plan card in their original position.
- Improved text and button readability across target cards, filters, observation-time controls, Planner, Help, first-start setup, and location entry.
- Removed retired catalog entries H20, H21, and C20, with stronger safeguards against their return through cached or merged data.
- Updated Abell planetary nebulae with integrated V magnitudes and kept the bundled catalog at magnitude 17.0 or brighter (including Abell 39).
- Added concise offline text Help and a detailed illustrated PDF guide, also downloadable from the iOS website.
20.2 Sep 17
Clearer planning, cleaner catalogs, and more detailed offline help.
- Improved text and button readability across target cards, filters, observation-time controls, Planner, Help, first-start setup, and location entry.
- Corrected Build Plan timing cascades so proposed sessions respect target visibility and telescope windows, including after-midnight observing.
- Checked targets keep a compact Remove from Plan card in their original position, making it easier to undo a selection.
- Removed retired catalog entries H20, H21, and C20, with stronger safeguards against their return through cached or merged data.
- Curated bundled catalog entries to magnitude 17.0 or brighter.
- Added concise offline text Help and a detailed illustrated PDF guide with step-by-step callouts, linked contents, an alphabetical index, and a catalog-count addendum.
- Made the full illustrated guide available to download from the iOS website.
20.1 Sep 6
Bug fixes and planning reliability improvements:
- Keeps checked-target Build Plan cascades inside the telescope window.
- Moves the first target start to its first valid Clear Sky time when needed.
- Shows a clear note when a target start time is adjusted for Clear Sky constraints.
- Improves planner and target-list synchronization after cascade conflicts.

Updated observing planning tools, improved session workflow, and general stability improvements.
19 Aug 2
Version 18 build 1 is a major smart-telescope planning update with requested timing and workflow fixes:
- Corrects checked-target planner timing so the first target starts at initialization, each next target starts at its first visible time, and the previous target ends there.
- Handles after-midnight cascades correctly for observing windows such as 22:34 to 04:47.
- Keeps the final target only through the earlier of its visible card end or the capture-window end, leaving unused time open for another target.
- Tightens target availability checks so a target is rejected if any minute of the proposed segment falls outside the viewing window.
- Keeps checked targets visible while switching object types, making mixed nebula, cluster, galaxy, and other plans easier to build.
- Adds planner Fill Gaps suggestions for open windows between scheduled targets.
- Adds Quick Ref PDF or text export for fast field use at the telescope.
- Pads low-altitude ALT report values to two digits in plan, PDF, print, share, and Quick Ref output.
- Adds telescope-specific Home timing, including shared Vaonis smart telescope timing based on the calibrated Vespera II Singularity field window.
- Adds optional Weather Underground PWS current observations while Open-Meteo continues to fill unsupported cloud and forecast rows.
- Resolves GPS-captured observing locations into address fields when iOS returns a placemark.
- Warns before target database downloads begin because the dataset may be large.
- Improves Clear Sky filtering across multiple azimuth/altitude zones.
- Removes Hestia from smart telescope setup because it is a phone accessory, not a true smart telescope.
- Updates About, Help, manuals, website materials, release screenshots, and the iOS logic-flow diagram.

- Plan a future observing night from setup instead of only using the current date.
- Filter targets by catalog, object type, magnitude, time, azimuth, altitude, and multiple Clear Sky openings.
- Keeps checked targets visible when switching object types, making mixed nebula, cluster, galaxy, and other plans easier to build.
- Adds a Quick Ref report with target name, first view time, azimuth, and altitude for fast use at the telescope.
- Improves Clear Sky filtering across multiple azimuth/altitude zones, including shared bearings where the less restrictive altitude applies.
- Merges duplicate catalog aliases into one target and restores saved plans that used older Messier, NGC, IC, Caldwell, or common-name entries.
- Restores the Telescope to Targets continue flow and improves last-plan restore versus clean-plan startup.
- Tightens sorting so First View is earliest first and Magnitude is brightest first.
- Updates the in-app About text, bundled Help, website manual, App Store screenshot set, and iOS logic flow documentation.
