New in 1.4: schools and home values on the Nearby map, and arrival that works. When the app detects you've arrived, sharing stops and your contact sees it.
SafeRoute helps you walk home with more confidence: see what's been reported around you, plan a route, share it with someone you trust, and reach help fast.
KEY FEATURES
- Nearby — open the app and see how much crime has been reported around you: a crime-safety score, a recent crime heatmap, what's most reported nearby, the safe spaces around you, and how reported incidents shift by time of day, including a "Right Now" read in many cities. Tap the heatmap for a spot's breakdown, or a safe space to route there. Search any area to check before you go.
- Crime-aware routing — every route is scored with the latest local crime data, labelled LOW, MODERATE or HIGH for reported incidents, and shows how much runs on lit vs dark streets, so you can pick the lower-risk path, not just the shortest.
- Area Safety widget — an at-a-glance crime-safety score on your Home Screen or Lock Screen for wherever you are, with what's been reported nearby.
- Share my walk — send a live link by WhatsApp, iMessage or any share-sheet app. With Live location (the default), your contact can follow you on a public page while you navigate, with no app needed. When the app detects you've arrived, sharing stops and the page says so. Choose a place in HELP mid-walk and the same link shows where you're heading.
- Live — in supported cities, street cameras and recent 911 dispatch calls, labelled as calls, not confirmed crimes. Calls never affect a score, except in New Orleans, which publishes no located crime reports, so its scores use 911 calls for crimes.
- Quick access to help — during a walk, your local emergency number (999 in the UK; 911 in the US, Canada and Mexico; 112 in most other places), confirmed before it dials, and HELP for the nearest hospital, police station or 24-hour shop. In the UK, the Strut Safe volunteer walk-home line is there too.
- Apple Watch and Live Activity — your next turn, ETA and distance on your wrist, Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, with safety actions one swipe away on the Watch. Drift off your route and you get a discreet haptic and a banner.
- Schools — official school data on the Nearby map for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 26 US cities, Toronto, Vancouver and Mexico City. Pin colours show the stage, never a rating. Where the publisher allows reuse, a school's details show its Ofsted inspection, its latest ETI report (Northern Ireland) or its Connecticut or Washington rating; for 15 other US states and DC the app links to the state.
- Home values — a separate map layer of official figures by area, each with its source and period: median sale prices in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, New York City, Washington DC, Baltimore, Charlotte, Hartford and Minneapolis, and owners' estimates of home value elsewhere in our US cities and in Toronto and Vancouver. None for Mexico City.
- Built for everyone — English and Spanish, full Dark Mode, Dynamic Type, VoiceOver labels and Reduce Motion support.
WHERE IT WORKS
SafeRoute covers four countries: the United Kingdom (England, Wales & Northern Ireland); 26 US cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Las Vegas and New Orleans; Toronto and Vancouver; and Mexico City. Crime data is each region's official open data, and the app picks the right source, emergency number and safe places for wherever you are. Each score compares an area with its own city over a stated window, not with other cities.
PRIVACY BY DESIGN
SafeRoute doesn't require an account. A walk you share is held only in our server's memory and deleted about 30 minutes after sharing stops, and at most about 4 hours 15 minutes after you made the link. School and home-value data is built into the app, so it isn't downloaded as you browse.
DESIGNED FOR THE WALK HOME
Most walking apps assume you want the fastest route. SafeRoute assumes you sometimes want the safer one. When the two differ — at 2 a.m. on an unfamiliar street — you choose.
Walk smart. Walk safer. Walk home.
This app is a real game-changer for getting around in New York City! I downloaded it when I first moved here, and keeping my toddler safe while walking is a top priority. Now, I can easily steer clear of blocks or streets that I know aren’t the safest for us. Honestly, it’s the best app ever!
Schools and home values, on the Nearby map.
Schools: official school data for England, Wales, Northern Ireland, 26 US cities, Toronto, Vancouver and Mexico City. Pin colours show the stage, never a rating. A school's details show its inspection report or rating where the publisher allows reuse.
Home values: official median sale prices or owners' estimates by area, with the source and period on every figure. There are no figures for Mexico City. School and home-value data is built into the app.
Arrival now works. When the app detects you've arrived, sharing stops and your contact's page says you've arrived. Earlier versions never told your contact that you had arrived.
Street Feel is still not asked. Our 1.3.2 notes said SafeRoute asks one question when you arrive. No version has asked it, and 1.4 does not either.
In HELP (FIND HELP on Apple Watch), GO now keeps your shared walk going, shows your contact which place you're heading to, and routes you from where you are. HELP now lists only places near where you are: earlier versions could show places looked up before for somewhere else. Its emergency call button now asks before it dials.
The sharing screen now says exactly what is shared and for how long, and, while you navigate, SafeRoute tells you when a link reaches its 4-hour limit.
During a walk, Apple Watch and the Live Activity now show the distance to the next turn and the distance left the same way as the navigation banner on your iPhone. Earlier versions always showed them in yards and miles.
On the Live tab, VoiceOver can now reach the street cameras and 911 calls on the map, up to 30 of each, nearest the centre first, and open them. With Reduce Motion on, the calls no longer pulse and the cards no longer slide in.
The analytics switch in About is now called Usage analytics. It was called Anonymous analytics, but the signals carry an identifier for each installation, so that name was wrong. A new Mapbox map data switch keeps your choice. 1.4 turns Mapbox's telemetry off once, the first time it starts, including after an update; versions 1.0.2 to 1.3.8 turned Mapbox's telemetry off again at every launch. Mapbox's Report button and "Rate your trip" screen are gone from navigation.
Correction: our earlier listing text said 911 calls are never part of your safety score. In New Orleans, which publishes no crime reports with locations, the score uses its 911 calls for crimes; About now says so.
Also: clearer "no data" messages on routes and the heatmap, a fix for the first location prompt, updated data credits in About, and Spanish throughout, including the widgets and Apple Watch.
Walk smart. Walk safer. Walk home.
