We'll remind you before your trial ends. Start the 7-day free trial on Annual and we'll send you a reminder 2 days before it ends. Just allow notifications when we ask, and decide with zero pressure. New here? Getting started is smoother now. Tell us your goal, try a few real phrases, and see the scenes waiting for you. In case you missed it: Lai and Fuu have new, clearer voices.

Lai and Fuu have new voices. Every phrase and every one of Lai's lines now plays in a new, clearer voice. Same Lai, just a lot easier to listen to and copy. Fuu got a new voice too, starting with the 18 autumn phrases that just landed: 肌寒い, 食欲の秋, 紅葉 and more, wearing the NEW badge. The first time you play a phrase after updating, it fetches the new audio. Give it a second.

See what's behind the lock. Locked phrases now show their English in every list, with an upgrade button where the Japanese goes. You know exactly what you'd be getting before you decide. Finish a free scene and Laifu shows you a Premium one to try next, a related one when there is one. And the Premium screen got simpler: plans and prices sit right at the top, so you are not scrolling to find them.

Seven new scenes, and a badge so you can find them. Seven new conversations went in: turning up late to class, asking the question you sat on all lesson, group work that goes nowhere, and the midnight snack you are not admitting to. They sit at the top of Scenes with a NEW badge on them, and the badge is on the new phrases too, so you can see what landed without hunting for it. 31 more everyday phrases, which makes 1,409 across 24 categories. Onboarding opens with a real phrase now, audio and all, instead of asking which language you want before showing you anything. Laifu follows your phone, and you can switch it on that same screen. And from now on the app tells you when something new lands, instead of hoping you scroll far enough to notice.

Read the kana, not the romaji. Turn romaji off and the line under a phrase becomes kana instead. Same EN / RO / JP toggle you already use, tap RO. Katakana stays katakana, so it reads the way the sentence is actually written, and it is there on every list, every phrase and inside the chat dialogues. Your level is on the home screen now. It moves every time you listen, say something or play a scene, and it tells you how far away the next one is. Levels also come faster than they used to, so yours has probably gone up while you were away. Badges got rebuilt. Fifty of them instead of twenty-eight, most reachable without paying, each one drawn rather than cropped out of a background. And you get told the moment you earn one, which was the real problem before. Practice has a way back. Coming in from a category used to leave you stuck there. Progress has its own tab now, so your badges, streak and level are one tap away. Some characters in scenes were showing the background through their clothes. Fixed, and Lai got a cleaner look while we were at it. We also went through the romaji line by line and fixed twenty-seven that were wrong.

Phrases got bigger. The Japanese on a list is the size it should have been all along, the reading under it is actually readable, and every list now reads the same way: what you want to say, then how to say it. The whole app also picked up a proper typeface instead of the system one. Open a phrase and the header tells you where you are, 3 of 36, with arrows to walk the rest without going back to the list every time. Reach the end of a category and the next one is waiting at the bottom. The heart moved onto the list, so you can see what you have kept and save something without opening it first. Practice remembers. Each phrase keeps how many times you matched it and your best score, and the browse list shows how far into a category you are and when you were last there. Your progress now has a five week stamp card for the days you turned up. New: Ask for a phrase. If there is something you want to say that Laifu does not cover yet, ask. We read every one, and answers go into the app where everyone can read them.

You can save a whole category at once now. Open a category, tap the save button above the list, and all of it goes into your cards. Some categories are split by level too, so you can take just the level you are ready for instead of the whole thing. Laifu asks before it saves the batch, and an Undo bar hangs around for ten seconds afterwards, so you can take the whole lot back out if you tapped too fast. New cards then arrive ten a day rather than all at once, so a deck you just filled still looks like something you can finish. Anything already in rotation still comes back the day it is due, and if ten is not enough you can start the next ten right away. Review cards flip. Tap one and it turns over. You can also turn the text off. EN, RO and JP each have their own switch, next to Play on a phrase or a scene and at the top right of a list. Switch off all three when you want to just listen, and tap the eye to peek at a line when you need it. Favorites is calmer to work through. Newest saves land at the top, every row says where it stands (New, Due today, Tomorrow, In 3 days), and category chips across the top narrow the list. The heart on a row takes it back out: the row stays where it is and goes pale, so nothing jumps while you work down the list, and tapping again puts it back. Inside a category, phrases are ordered by how much you have to put together yourself, so the ones you can say as they are come first. Evening reminders stopped repeating themselves. If you have been away a while you get a phrase instead of another nudge.

Setup now builds you a phrasebook. Lai says hi, then asks two quick things: why you are learning, and how much Japanese you already know. From those two answers you get five real phrases. Tap the ones you know. Anything new is saved for you automatically, so you finish setup with something in your cards instead of nothing. Then you hear a short conversation and get one line to say out loud. Your saved phrases now sit at the top of the home screen instead of behind a tab. Saving is what makes it stick, so it should not be hidden. New phrases: - 14 lines straight out of anime, each with a note on when it actually works. 待って is fine anywhere. 覚悟しろ is perfect before a game and absurd everywhere else. - Warmer ways to talk to someone you care about. - How to answer "Your Japanese is good. Where did you learn?" without making it awkward.

Pronunciation practice, fixed. - It hears you from the first syllable. The app was not recording the start of what you said, which is why short phrases scored so badly. - It scores how you say the phrase, not how we happen to write it. Say みて and 診て counts. - Numbers work. 一, 二, 十, 百 and 千 could never score full marks before, however well you said them. - Audio stops going quiet after you use the mic. If you tried the mic and gave up on it, it is worth another go. Sorry it took this long.

This one is mostly about sound. - Every phrase plays. A caching bug could leave clips silent, and it is fixed. - Volume is even now. We measured and re-processed all 5,237 clips to one consistent level, so you are not reaching for the volume button between phrases. - Three phrases that had no audio at all now have it. - Saving is easier to find. If you have not saved anything yet, the heart tells you what it is for. - Better handling when a purchase or restore does not go through. A lot of this came from people writing in. Thank you, and keep it coming.

Laifu just got better: - Spaced repetition, front and center. Save a phrase and we bring it back right before you'd forget it, until it sticks. - Sign in with Apple or Google. Your streak, saves, and progress now sync across your devices. - A quick guided tour the first time you open the app. - A cleaner phrase screen and smoother touches throughout. Thanks for learning with us.
