HiWord.AI
Vocabulary you'll actually use
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Reach a 7-, 30- or 100-day streak and share a milestone card. Saved words and sentences can become cards too, and synonyms on flashcards open a quick comparison.
HiWord.AI helps you learn English words you can actually use: a few new words each day, met again in an article, a sentence to read aloud and a conversation.
Learning one word well beats memorizing a hundred. HiWord gives you a small set of words each day and carries them from flashcards to practice, reading and speaking, so "I recognize it" becomes "I can say it."
TODAY'S PATH
Three steps a day: flashcards, practice, and an article written with your words. Shadowing and AI Talk are there whenever you want to speak, and they earn XP too.
AI TALK
Chat with five AI partners, each with their own personality, voice and level, from a patient beginner coach to a sharp investor. Talk about your day and use today's words. Every session ends with a short review of what went well and what to rephrase.
SHADOWING WITH FEEDBACK
Read a sentence after the native audio and get instant feedback on accuracy, rhythm, stress, fluency and clarity, down to the word and the sound.
READING AND DAILY NEWS
Read articles written with the words you're learning, with bilingual support, full-text audio and tap-to-look-up. A short Daily News brief in plain English arrives every morning.
PRACTICE
Sentence tiles, listening, matching and fill-ins. When you pick a wrong answer, HiWord tells you what that word means.
ASK HIWORD
Ask in English or Chinese. Look up a word, a phrase or a whole sentence, find natural ways to say what you mean, check whether your own sentence sounds right, and see how two words differ.
IMPORT YOUR OWN ENGLISH
Bring in links, text, photos, documents and audio, or share straight from Safari and other apps. HiWord turns them into articles you can read, listen to and practice with.
GAMES
You Describe, AI Guesses: see a secret word and give clues in English until the AI guesses it. No timer, so take your time.
LEADERBOARD
A weekly board that resets every Monday. Cheer on the people learning with you.
WORDBOOKS
Daily English, Ogden 850, KET, PET, IELTS, Gaokao, CET-4, CET-6, Business, Crypto, PSLE, World Cup, F1 and more. Every word comes with phonetics, part of speech, Chinese meaning and example sentences.
ON IPHONE, IPAD AND APPLE WATCH
Optimized for iPhone Duo: learn on the full inner display and keep your place when you fold or unfold. Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets show what to study next, and you can review cards on Apple Watch. Your progress syncs across devices, and core learning works offline.
HIWORD PRO
HiWord is free to download, and flashcards and practice are free. With HiWord Pro you can use AI chats, shadowing packs and imports without holding back.
HiWord Pro is an auto-renewable subscription. Payment is charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel it in your App Store account settings.

Stop studying. Start using.
more HiWord 1.3.23 lets you turn your progress into cards to share.
Share cards
- On a streak milestone day, after you study, Today offers "Share your N days" and makes a milestone card you can save or share
- Saved words and sentences can be shared as a card from your lists and sentence details; the card shows just that word or sentence with its meaning and example
- You can also share from the back of a flashcard and from a saved word's details, and the streak card on Today has a share button
- Cards never show your username or avatar
Favorites
- Saved sentences now sync across your devices
- Importing material no longer overwrites the meaning of a word you've already saved
Flashcards
- Tap a synonym on the back of a card to ask how it differs from the word; tap a related word form to look it up
Practice
- Sentence-building questions only use sentences that have a Chinese translation, so you are never asked to build a whole sentence from a single word's meaning
Limits
- Without an account, your daily AI uses now count for this device, instead of being shared with everyone on the same Wi-Fi
1.3.23 1d ago
HiWord 1.3.22 makes AI Talk smoother and makes many details more consistent.
AI Talk
- When you finish speaking, your whole recording is transcribed first; live captions are used only if that is slow or fails
- Several sentences in one go are all kept, and your last words aren't lost when you stop
- Each conversation review is saved in Past reviews, so you can read it again or swipe to delete it
- While the summary is being written, you see what your partner is doing, how many sentences you said and what the summary will cover
- Live captions show up to about five lines and always keep the newest words in view
- Replies scroll into view sentence by sentence, and your message rises from the input box
- Messages that failed to send can be retried when you come back, and near-silence gets a "didn't catch that"
Today
- When you finish, Today shows one achievement card, and the fox's expression and words change with how much you did
- Every step of today's path can be opened directly; the order is just a suggestion
- The daily XP cap is higher, and Today shows "Maxed today" when you reach it
Practice
- Hard questions have a Hint button that fills in the next word or letter, leaving the last one to you
Account
- Before you sign in to a different account, HiWord asks first and explains what on this device will be replaced
- Signing out syncs your progress to your account first
- Avatar, username and account are together in one profile sheet
- You get a confirmation after signing in, and when today's uses run out the app tells you when they come back
Audio and reading
- Read-aloud across the app uses your account, so rare words no longer fall back to the system voice
- In shadowing, the next sentence's audio is prepared in advance
- Bilingual reading has clearer hierarchy and spacing, with quieter buttons after each sentence
- After-reading quiz options and answers are fixed
More consistent
- Flashcards sit right under the progress bar and grow with your screen, so the back needs less scrolling; on iPad the Chinese meaning is back under the word
- Every sheet has its close button at the top right; on iPhone Duo it sits in the side bar
- Me, Settings and your favorites lists share one style, and small text is easier to read
- The leaderboard opens instantly, and your own score and rank update right away
1.3.22 2d ago
HiWord 1.3.21 makes importing smoother and gives Ask, Reading and Shadowing a cleaner look.
Import
- The import sheet opens on "Paste text"
- Pasted text and documents keep your original wording; HiWord adds a title, key sentences and new words, so they're ready sooner
- The text box shows how many characters are still needed or over the limit
- "Retry" after a failure sends the same content again
- After you submit, you're told roughly how long it takes and where to find it: Reading · Mine
Ask
- A warm light around the question box follows what Ask is doing: it moves while thinking and glows briefly when the answer arrives
- The empty box rotates example questions so you know what to ask
- Answers drop extra decoration, example words wrap instead of being cut off, and the listen, copy and save icons share one size
Reading
- New words are marked with a thin solid line, and the word list at the end is a two-column table that's easier to scan
- A simpler "Finish reading" card and bilingual switch
- Numbered list items no longer leave the number on a line of its own
Shadowing
- Practice cards, icons and the stats bar share one style and read better in dark mode
- Expanding a sentence list is smoother
1.3.21 3d ago
HiWord 1.3.20 is optimized for iPhone Duo and brings a new leaderboard.
iPhone Duo
- On the inner display, HiWord fills the whole screen with no black borders
- When you fold or unfold, AI Talk stays on the latest message and Reading stays where you were
- The word card, avatars and the daily news cover adjust to the screen width
- Use the outer display one-handed and the inner display for reading, and pick up right where you left off
Leaderboard
- New weekly board: see who learned the most this week. It starts fresh every Monday
- The top three stand on a gold, silver and bronze podium, and the top card tells you how much XP you need to pass the next person
- When someone cheers you on, their message appears at the top and you can cheer back in one tap
- If your rank went up since you last looked, you'll see how many places you climbed
- Your row updates right after you study, and you can see your rank outside the top 50
- Long-press someone to report or block them
Avatar and account
- Choose an emoji with a background colour, or use a photo. It shows on the leaderboard and in Profile
- Change your username once every 7 days. Your progress stays with your account
Experience points
- Flashcards, practice, shadowing and reading show the XP you earned that round
- Practice shows one number, XP, and you see what each correct answer adds
- Every game round earns XP, up to 50 per game per day
Practice
- Clearer right and wrong feedback, with the correct answer on its own line
- The answer area sits closer to your thumb, and matching is less cluttered
Reading and listening
- Articles open from the card you tap and close back into it
- Daily news is ready before you open it
- The mini player has a playback controls button for speed, voice, sleep timer and previous article
- Imported articles are cleaner, with no stray formatting symbols
Other
- The leaderboard and games now sit higher on Today, the main study card is simpler, and the streak card shows your next goal
- Flashcards and practice feel more polished
- Buttons that only close or go back no longer vibrate
The focus of this version: on iPhone Duo, unfold and read like an open book.
1.3.20 4d ago
HiWord 1.3.19 makes experience points more accurate and helps You Describe, AI Guesses hear you better.
Experience points
- Get 1 XP the first time you open the app each day
- XP now reflects what you actually did, and no longer drops after a sync
- Each AI Talk turn is worth more, and finishing a game counts too
- Quick shadowing from the dictionary and voice scoring in AI Talk now count toward XP and your streak
- The reading achievement card and the shadowing summary show the XP you actually earned
- The leaderboard and Today use the same XP
Today's path
- When you come back after a few days away, today's path gives fewer new words so you can review what you've learned first
Reading
- While the AI writes an article, it lists the words you're learning that it will use, so you can look out for them
You Describe, AI Guesses
- A shorter wait after you let go, with clear labels while your speech is transcribed and while the AI guesses
- The start sound plays once the microphone is on, so your first words are recorded
- Recording continues for a moment after you let go, so your last word isn't cut off
- More accurate recognition of English clues
The focus of this version: every bit of practice counts toward your XP, and your spoken English is easier to understand.
1.3.19 5d ago
HiWord 1.3.18 makes practice feel more hands-on and lets you cheer each other on.
Practice
- New exercise: read the Chinese meaning and build the English sentence from word tiles
- Listen to a sentence and build it from tiles; once you get it right, the next time asks you to type it
- Switch between tiles and the keyboard before you answer
- Tap a word in an example sentence to see what it means
- When you answer wrong, you see what the option you picked actually means
- Tiles leave an empty slot when you move them, with a soft sound and tap, and you see right or wrong in place
- An optional "Quick match · 60s" on the completion page tests how fast you recognise the words you just practised; it doesn't affect your reviews or XP
Leaderboard
- Cheer for anyone on the leaderboard, once per person per day
- Cheers you receive appear at the top of the leaderboard, and the leaderboard entry on Today lets you know
You Describe, AI Guesses
- Every word now has its own emoji
- The AI only wins by saying the word itself; a synonym counts as "very close"
Other
- A simpler finished state on Today: one summary line and lighter shadowing and AI Talk entries
- After voice input in Ask, editing the text no longer hides the card behind the keyboard, and the keyboard's Search key submits
The focus of this version: more ways to build sentences, and a small way to encourage each other.
1.3.18 Oct 21
HiWord 1.3.17 fixes words that played no sound, and lets you look up words right inside example sentences.
Ask and dictionary
- In dictionary examples, English definitions and Ask answers, press and hold a word to open the same word card as in Reading
- The card shows the example sentence and its translation, and you can double-tap an example to copy it
- With a card open, pressing another word updates the card in place
You Describe, AI Guesses
- Two new categories: people and relationships, and abstract ideas
- At most one challenge word per round, marked on the card and never the first word
- Tap the AI's bubble to get a reaction; while it waits for you, it blinks and looks around
Fixes
- Fixed some words playing no sound; if the cloud voice ever fails, the system voice reads the word instead
The focus of this version: look up new words right where you meet them, and hear every word.
1.3.17 Oct 20
HiWord 1.3.16 adds a speaking game and a redesigned games hub.
You Describe, AI Guesses
- You see a secret word and give clues in English, by voice or by typing; the AI guesses from your clues alone
- Three suggested words a day from different categories; up to three clues per word, and if the AI doesn't get it you see a model sentence you can tap to hear
- No timer, lives or leaderboard, so take your time
- Live captions while you hold to speak, then a more accurate transcript when you let go; tap the text to fix a misheard word
- The AI reacts like a friend would, and its bubble character changes expression with how sure it is
- Words come from different categories, new ones first, with no repeats until you have seen them all
- The end page shows how many you got today and the words from each round
- Tap the music note to turn background music on or off, or press and hold to turn off sound effects
Games hub
- Each game has its own cover that shows how it is played
- Cards show today's progress or your best score, and start with one tap
Reading and decks
- Preview cards before an article now show the part of speech, such as n., v. or adj.
- Bilingual data in the built-in decks has been filled in, and importing a deck offline now works
- Saved words now have their example translations and part of speech filled in
The focus of this version: one more reason to speak up, by describing a word until the AI gets it.
1.3.16 Oct 19
HiWord 1.3.15 makes the step after your first lesson clearer, simplifies the subscription page, and keeps your place when the screen changes size.
First lesson
- After the first lesson, the main button is "Practice these 3 words", so you can lock them in with a few questions
- Tap a word on the end page to hear it
- When you return to Today, the deck label glows briefly to show where you can switch decks
- New installs find three short bilingual guide articles in the reading list: on forgetting and review, reading just above your level, and going from knowing a word to saying it, each showing how a HiWord step fits in
Subscription page
- Redesigned: one word goes through flashcards, practice, reading, shadowing and conversation, and the page explains what HiWord Pro does on one screen
- The price sits next to the purchase button, and the button simply says what it does
- At large text sizes the purchase area scrolls with the content instead of squeezing the buttons
Ask and dictionary
- English words and short phrases in the built-in dictionary, such as "blood vessel", are looked up directly
- On a slow connection these lookups no longer show "unavailable"
Screen size changes
- When you fold or unfold a foldable phone, or resize an iPad split view, AI Talk stays on the latest message and Reading stays where you were
- The word card and the avatar crop adjust to the new width
- On wide screens, the Daily News cover takes no more than half the reading area
- Fixed the top of the first card being covered on the shadowing page on screens without a status bar at the top
Other
- When sign-in is needed, the prompt says which feature it is for
- An imported material's learning path is marked complete once you finish its review practice
The focus of this version: know what to do after your first lesson, see what Pro offers at a glance, and keep your place on any screen.
1.3.15 Oct 18
HiWord 1.3.14 makes your saved words easier to find and manage, and tidies up the reading list and the word card.
Saved words
- Search by word, meaning, example sentence and more
- Filter by learning status, and sort by recently saved, A to Z, or due for review first
- Listen to any word right from the list
- Undo after removing a word
- Study only the words you have filtered, or pick a few and study those
- Words saved on another device appear in the list as soon as they sync
Reading
- The Daily News card at the top of the reading list shows the day's illustration and top three headlines
- Past briefs are listed by date, with their headlines as the summary
- A more compact article list
- When you tap a word while reading, the card fits its content, and tapping another word updates the card in place instead of closing and reopening it
AI Talk
- Replies now appear sentence by sentence instead of all at once
- Fixed the opening message sometimes not appearing; on a shaky connection it now tries again automatically, and you can tap Retry if it still fails
- Conversations now open and close with the standard slide, and you can swipe from the left edge to go back to the characters
The focus of this version: saved words you can actually find and study, not just keep.
1.3.14 Oct 17
HiWord 1.3.13 makes Daily News better to look at and to listen to, and keeps your first lesson free of interruptions.
Daily News
- Each issue opens with a still-life illustration of the day, and every object in it stands for one of the day's stories
- Share or save the day's news as a poster: Share poster in the share menu
- Listen now uses a news-anchor voice, at a pace closer to a real broadcast
- A new layout for the brief: a dated header, a lead-in, numbered sections and thin rules between stories
Learning
- An uninterrupted first lesson: the tab bar is hidden while you learn, and shadowing on a card works without signing in
- If you sign in before finishing your first lesson, you return to Today to carry on
- Today's learning path on the completion pages is now tappable: tap a step you have not done to go straight to it
The focus of this version: news worth a second look and a second listen, and a first lesson you can finish in one go.
1.3.13 Oct 14
HiWord 1.3.12 fixes a crash when opening an AI Talk conversation, and makes the reading page and Settings cleaner.
Fix
- Fixed a crash in 1.3.11 when opening an AI Talk conversation
Reading
- Listen no longer floats over the text: it now sits above the article, and moves to the navigation bar once you scroll into the text
- Preview before you read is now a single line, so the article starts sooner
- New words are marked with a dotted underline only, without changing the text colour
- More consistent article typography: line spacing and alignment for headings, body text and bilingual view
Me and Settings
- Settings are grouped by category, and Theme and Language show the current choice
- Rows on the Me page and in Settings share one style, and text is no longer cut off at large text sizes
- A redesigned HiWord Pro member card
Motion and sound
- Smoother flashcard motion
- Notification sounds are now HiWord's own
- With Reduce Motion on, more screens (including the recording page) simplify their animations
To 1.3.11 users: sorry about the crash in AI Talk. Updating to this version fixes it.
1.3.12 Oct 12
HiWord 1.3.11 rebuilds the placement test, lets you preview key words before reading, and makes the end of each practice and flashcard round clearer.
Placement test
- A redesigned placement test, about 3 minutes: three stages (recognise, verify, choose the word), with questions that get harder or easier as you answer
- Tap only, no typing
- Your result shows a level, a vocabulary score, and an estimated vocabulary range
- You get a level certificate to share or save to Photos
- Find it in the level setting on the Me page: tap Take placement test to start, and View my certificate to open it again later
Reading
- Preview before you read: key words are listed at the top of the article, and you can go through them as flashcards first
- Swipe a card left or right to answer, and undo the last card
- Cards show phonetics, and you can listen to the sentence the word came from
- Words you are still unsure about stay with the article, so next time you review only those; you can also add them to Saved
- Fixed the "in this article" sentence and translation sometimes missing from the word card
Practice
- A segmented progress bar at the top, one segment per question
- The fox now appears on the correct and wrong panels, with an expression that follows how you are doing
- The keyboard stays up between consecutive typing questions
- Fixed practice pausing after a correct answer on slow connections
Flashcards
- A new end page: how many words you went through, how many were new, and which ones you will see again
- The flashcard end page and the practice completion page now share one style
Today and launch
- A smoother handoff from the launch screen to the loading page
- A simpler Today page, with the main button right below the fox
The focus of this version: know your level, meet the words before you read, and see clearly what each round covered.
1.3.11 Oct 11
HiWord 1.3.10 puts the words you learn each day in a more useful order, and makes practice and shadowing smoother.
Learning order
- Decks no longer follow the alphabet: common words come first, and words from the same everyday situation are learned together
- Your first open shows only the first lesson: 3 words, each shown once, before anything else
- Every deck was proofread: corrected meanings and phonetics, and a second example sentence where one was missing
Practice
- New practice sounds and haptics, with results shown in a panel at the bottom
- Answer options use short meanings, and near-synonyms no longer appear as wrong options
- The quick check in flashcards has a cleaner single-column layout
Saved words
- Saved words are filled in right away with a meaning and an example; the card back shows the example's translation
- Words you remove from Saved no longer come back after syncing
- Looking up a word while reading shows the sentence it came from, with its translation
Shadowing
- Faster scoring
- Fixed recordings that stopped automatically and then reported a scoring failure
- Simpler results that point out only clear misreads and skipped words
- Deck-based shadowing sets are limited to 10 items
- Mouth-shape demo audio now plays in silent mode
AI Talk
- Replies start speaking sooner
- Your message shows as sent right away
Word games
- A new games hub and a full-screen game page
- Games use words from your current deck: words you are learning first, then words you have learned
Watch and widgets
- Watch review list: newly saved words appear at once, and only cards that are due are shown
- The Home Screen widget shows recently saved words and a Daily News shortcut
Daily News
- More sources, plus a new Opinions section
- Today's Daily News is also pinned under Mine in Reading
Me
- A simpler Me page, with learning progress shown in one place
- Pull to refresh keeps the current content on screen
- Tap a hard word to open it in Ask
Other
- Fixed YouTube links failing to import
- Articles shared to X include a card image generated for the article
- The deck picker opens taller; Crypto and sports decks moved under More
- Fixed word audio not playing after switching headphones
- A HiWord Pro entry at the bottom of Home
The focus of this version: a better learning order, and faster, smoother practice and shadowing.
1.3.10 Oct 10
HiWord 1.3.9 adds three exam decks and helps you stay focused while you read.
Exam decks
- New Gaokao, CET-4, and CET-6 decks, under Exam in the deck picker
- The CET-6 deck only includes words beyond CET-4, so you can keep going without repeats
- Common exam words with more than one part of speech show each one on the back of the card, for example n. 熊; v. 忍受
- Decks are now grouped into Recommended, Exam, and Business English
Reading
- New Immersive mode: no word underlines, sentence highlights, or tips, just the text; turn it on in reading appearance settings
- In articles, press and hold a word to look it up; an underline grows as you hold, so scrolling and light taps no longer open word cards by accident
- Double-tap a sentence for the sentence menu: listen from here, Ask, copy, or break it down
- Sharing an article now creates share text and a preview card, and hiword.ai article links open directly in the app
Lookup
- Look up a form like ran, children, or taken, and tap through to the base word, for example "past tense of run"
- In the reading word card, the base word opens in the same card, with a way back to the original word
- Lookup results build up in place without the layout jumping
- Misspelled word forms are now corrected too, for example backchanelling → backchannelling
- Words that aren't in the dictionary get an AI explanation, clearly marked as AI
HiWord Pro
- A new HiWord Pro card in Me shows your membership status
- The subscription screen is laid out for iPad in both portrait and landscape
Daily News
- More specific headlines and plainer wording
- The finance and crypto section now includes stablecoin payment news
- Stories covered in the previous two days are no longer repeated
- Tapping a Daily News notification now opens that day's brief instead of the Home screen
This release is about rounding out exam prep, and reading with fewer distractions.
1.3.9 Oct 9
HiWord 1.3.8 introduces HiWord Pro, and makes sure the words you save actually get reviewed.
HiWord Pro Annual
- Chat with AI characters: five personalities to try your new words on
- Shadowing packs on demand: turn an article, link, photo, or topic into lines to shadow
- Turn what you read into lessons: import articles, photos, and recordings as bilingual reading
- Ask HiWord: how to say it, whether it's right, what the difference is
- Free users still get a daily AI allowance, and flashcards and reviews stay free; Pro lifts the AI limits, subject to fair use
- Manage your membership and restore purchases in Settings
Flashcards
- Your favorites now mix into daily flashcards: up to 3 new favorites a day plus due reviews, with no deck switching
- Mixed-in cards are tagged "From Favorites", and you can turn this off in Settings
- Definitions for saved words fill in and update the card live, instead of staying on "loading"
- Tapping "Easy" tears the card away to reveal the next one; skipped when Reduce Motion is on
Audio and pronunciation
- Speak buttons respond instantly, showing loading and playing states; tapping again while loading no longer cancels the audio
- Pronunciations are now shown consistently in /…/ format
Notifications
- HiWord asks about notifications on first launch, so you won't miss review reminders or Daily News
- If they're off, you'll get one gentle prompt after finishing a study module, at most once a day; choose "Not now" and it stays quiet for a while
This release is about giving AI practice more room, and making sure no saved word gets left behind.
1.3.8 Oct 3
HiWord 1.3.7 turns word lookup into a dictionary built for learners.
1.3.7 Oct 2
HiWord 1.3.6 makes learning on iPad more comfortable, and makes sure your reminders actually arrive.
iPad
- A sidebar in landscape and a top tab bar in portrait, switching automatically when Split View gets narrow
- Tap a word while reading and its card opens right next to it, without covering the text
- Reading settings open beside the gear button, so you can see the text change as you adjust the size
- Me, import, and the placement test open in full-size windows; the document scanner uses the full screen
- Favorites open as their own page, giving the list room to breathe
- Talk, Shadowing, the leaderboard, Ask, and the reading player keep a comfortable width instead of stretching across the screen
Notifications
- Review reminders, streak reminders, and Daily News notifications now arrive reliably
- Turn on notifications from the card on Today or in Settings
Daily News
- Written like a news broadcast: each item leads with the key point, then adds a sentence or two of numbers, causes, or what's next when needed
- Every item now has its own headline, so you can scan the brief at a glance
- The World section now includes 1–2 local Singapore stories each day
Other
- Saving favorites now requires signing in; if you're not signed in, tapping the heart opens sign-in and saves the item once you're done
- Fixed a double navigation bar on the card learning screen that also blocked swipe-back
This release is about comfortable reading on a bigger screen, and reminders you won't miss.
1.3.6 Sep 29
HiWord 1.3.5 gives practice a better rhythm and your day a reason to read in English.
Practice
- A focused set of play types, keeping the ones that work best
- Each round starts with a matching warm-up, builds up step by step, and ends on an easier question
- Earn stars for correct answers and build combos with haptics and sound; each round ends with a 1–3 star rating based on accuracy
- A one-letter typo still counts as correct, and you'll see the right spelling
- Tap "Can't listen now" to swap the remaining listening questions in the round for other types
- Practice sounds can be turned off in Settings
Daily News
- A daily English news brief is published every morning at 8:00 (UTC+8), covering world, finance, and tech, pinned first in Plaza
- World news focuses on cross-border stories; finance items include the key numbers
- One notification a day that opens straight to the brief
Reading
- A magazine-style layout for articles and the list, showing source, headline, summary, and reading time
- Key sentences are marked right in the paragraph; long-press to break a sentence down
- Before you start listening, a small "Listen · N min" button stays out of the way of the text
- Articles open with an intro and a preview of new words, and end with the next article to read
- Bilingual view no longer splits numbers and abbreviations such as $2.4 billion or Nov. 5
- Fixed some long articles failing to translate
Lookup and Ask
- Typos are handled: clear misspellings are corrected with a note, and uncertain ones show "Did you mean"
- Spelling mistakes in your sentences are highlighted, and you can re-ask with the corrected sentence in one tap
- A clearer Ask results page with no more side-scrolling
- Upgraded AI for explanations, conversation practice, and pronunciation scoring
Other
- Lighter body text in Dark Mode for easier reading
This release is about giving you something to read every day, and practice that feels rewarding.
1.3.5 Sep 28
HiWord 1.3.4 makes every word you look up easier to learn, and shadowing easier to follow.
Lookup
Far fewer "no results": technical terms, proper nouns, compounds, and inflected forms now return definitions
More words include pronunciation, an English definition, and examples; UK and US pronunciations appear on separate lines when they differ
Entries show exam levels (Zhongkao, Gaokao, CET-4/6, Kaoyan, IELTS, TOEFL, GRE), Collins frequency stars, and Oxford 3000, so you can tell whether a word is worth learning now
Plurals and other word forms point to the base word with its meaning and forms, for example children → child
More accurate Chinese-to-English lookups, and short Chinese words go straight to dictionary results
After looking up an English word, continue with its usage and collocations, or try a quick usage check
Long phrases no longer break in the middle of a word
Shadowing
Your saved sentences now form a shadowing pack you can start right away
Long sentences are split into sense groups with pause marks; linking hints are fewer and more accurate
A cleaner shadowing screen: one progress indicator, and the original audio, speed, and settings in a single row
This release is about making the words you find easier to understand, remember, and say out loud.

HiWord 1.3.3 polishes Ask lookups: local definitions appear first, slow or offline networks keep existing answers, and Chinese phrases, phrase spelling correction, system dictionary fallback, and speaking wordbook recommendations are improved.
1.3.3 Sep 15
• Faster word lookups: common English words now show dictionary results right away, without waiting for AI routing
• Chinese word lookup: type words like 幸福 or 加班 and get the best English option instantly
• Expression answers are more practical, with the top phrase, examples, common Chinglish traps, and collocations
• “Does this sound natural?” now explains what changed, why it changed, and which L1 habit caused the issue
• Usage comparisons now include a 5-second rule to help you tell similar words and patterns apart
• Grammar answers start with the “why,” then break the sentence down clearly
• Ask adjusts answer depth based on your learning level
• The Ask input field has a smoother, more polished thinking glow
• Practice now supports sentence-form progression and listening question types, with shadowing surfaced more naturally after flashcards
1.3.2 Aug 17
• Daily Path now guides you from cards into shadowing, so recognition turns into pronunciation more naturally
• Practice is smarter: fewer repetitive spelling drills, better sentence-based questions, and a new listening choice type
• Sentence learning is improved for spoken phrases and saved sentences, with a clearer progression through ordering, fill-in, translation, and dictation
• Ask is now available across the app: from cards, practice feedback, reading, shadowing, Quick Shadow, and saved sentence details without leaving your flow
• Reading key sentence cards are cleaner, with actions moved into a bottom toolbar so the sentence itself has room to breathe
• Wordbook switching is easier: spoken sentences are easier to find, and business and sports decks are grouped more clearly
• Practice interactions are more polished: wrong answers stay on screen, review rounds are clearer, and keyboard handling feels smoother
• A voluntary support entry is now available in Profile for learners who want to help HiWord keep improving

HiWord 1.3.23 lets you turn your progress into cards to share.
