Sotto is a Markdown viewer for macOS that stays out of your way.
The name comes from sotto voce, meaning 'in a quiet voice'. This app does exactly that: it does not shout. There are no toolbars, no editor mode and no chrome around your document. You open a .md file and read it. That's the whole product.
Why did I build it?
I built Sotto for myself. I read lots of Markdown notes, READMEs and technical specifications, but I could not find a viewer that simply did its job: opening the file, rendering it nicely, enabling smooth scrolling and getting out of the way. The existing options were either heavy editors that I did not need, web-based renderers stuffed inside an Electron wrapper, or pretty experiments that slowed down when a document grew beyond a few kilobytes. So I wrote my own. It solves my own problem, and it might solve yours too.
What's inside?
No third-party libraries. There is no web view. No JavaScript. The result is a bundle that is measured in single-digit megabytes, launches instantly, scrolls at full frame rate and can read even large documents with ease.

- Renders headings, paragraphs, lists, blockquotes, tables, links and inline emphasis
- Syntax highlighting for code blocks: Swift, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Bash, JSON, HTML, CSS, Go, Rust and Ruby.
- Light and dark mode with colours based on GitHub's Primer palette, so .md files look as expected
- Adjustable text size (⌘+, ⌘-, ⌘0), which scales the entire layout, not just the font
- Support for Mermaid charts
- Quick Look preview for any .md file in Finder
- Read-only by design: Sotto never modifies your files.
