Mac
Eyes tired after hours at the Mac? SafeYourEye times 20-20-20 breaks, checks screen distance and blink rate, and lets you self-check acuity, contrast and Amsler grid.
SafeYourEye helps you protect your vision during long hours at the Mac by following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (6 m) away for 20 seconds.
SafeYourEye is free to use. Break reminders, and a short preview of ambient-light and distance monitoring, are available to everyone. An optional SafeYourEye Pro subscription removes the daily break-reminder limit and unlocks continuous light and distance monitoring, blink-rate measurement, and the vision self-checks, with a free trial available.
FEATURES
• Break timer — counts your work session and reminds you when it is time to rest your eyes. Session length is adjustable from 5 to 60 minutes.
• Full-screen break — a dimmed screen with a 20-second countdown, so it is easy to actually look away. Every third break is a longer one.
• Ambient light monitoring — reads the Mac light sensor and tells you when it is too dark or too bright for comfortable work.
• Distance tracking — the front camera estimates how far your face is from the screen and warns you when you lean in too close.
• Blink rate measurement — a five-minute camera session counts how often you blink, with history and a trend by time of day.
• Daily statistics — sessions completed, breaks taken and skipped, work time for today and for the past week.
• Idle detection — step away from the Mac and the timer stops by itself; locking the screen resets the session.
• Always-tick mode — keep the timer running even while you are idle.
• Launch at Login — SafeYourEye is ready as soon as you sign in.
• Six languages — English, Russian, German, Chinese, French and Italian.
VISION SELF-CHECKS
• Visual acuity — symbols are shown at an exact angular size, computed from the distance the camera measures to your eyes and the physical pixel size of your display. Answer with the mouse: left button yes, right button no, or point at the gap in a Landolt ring.
• Contrast sensitivity — the symbol keeps its size and slowly fades. This one is not limited by display resolution, so it works on any screen and suits frequent measurements.
• Astigmatism fan and Amsler grid — two quick looks with no staircases and no scoring. You simply say whether anything looks uneven or distorted, and the app remembers where.
• Express check — ninety seconds, both eyes together. Good for comparing morning with evening.
• Change over time — measurements are compared only when the conditions match: the same display, the same glasses, the same protocol. A measurement that runs into the limit of your screen is marked as a lower bound instead of being mixed in with the rest. A PDF summary can be saved to take to your eye doctor.
PRIVACY
SafeYourEye collects no personal data. The camera is used only to estimate face-to-screen distance, to count blinks and to keep you at the right distance during a vision check; frames are processed on device in real time and are never saved or sent anywhere. Statistics, blink history and vision check history stay on your Mac. Camera access is optional — everything else keeps working without it. The app makes a single network request: it reads the minimum supported version, so that an outdated copy can be told to update. It carries none of your data.
The 20-20-20 rule is a widely recommended habit for reducing digital eye strain. SafeYourEye is a habit-building app, not a medical device, and does not replace advice from an eye-care professional. The vision checks are a self-check for tracking change over time. They are measured at screen distance rather than the five metres used in a clinic, so their numbers cannot be compared directly with a clinical result, and no result is a diagnosis.
