Shea is the natural hair care app and hair growth tracker made for Black women with Type 3 and Type 4 hair: 4C, 4B, 4A, 3C, 3B and 3A.
Generic apps do not understand natural hair. Coily, kinky and curly hair needs different products, different routines and different timing. Shea is built around exactly that.
KNOW WHAT IS IN YOUR PRODUCTS
Scan any product's barcode or its ingredient list and Shea reads it against 3,000 ingredients, then tells you how it fits your hair. Not a generic score. Your porosity, your curl pattern, your goals. It flags protein when your hair is protein sensitive, drying alcohol high on the label, and buildup you will need to clarify. Tell Shea what your hair hates and it watches every label for you.
CHECK YOUR WHOLE SHELF AT ONCE
One product tells you almost nothing. Shea reads your entire routine together and finds what no single scan can: protein creeping into everything, a shelf that is all moisture and never holds a curl, buildup with nothing to lift it.
A COMMUNITY OF WOMEN WITH YOUR HAIR
Ask a question and get real answers from women whose hair actually looks like yours. Over 10,000 black women so far. Wash day wins, product disappointments, length checks, and the questions you would not ask anywhere else.
HAIR GROWTH TRACKER
Monthly progress photos, side by side then-and-now comparisons, and length measurements from TWA to waist length. Real proof your routine is working.
WASH DAY AND ROUTINE
Build your wash day and follow it step by step. Pre-poo, co-wash, deep condition, leave-in, style. Shea reminds you when the next one is due.
PRODUCT SHELF AND RATINGS
Track every product you own, rate it on moisture, slip and hold, and find your holy grails. Stop spending money on things that do not work on 4C, 4B, 3C or 3B hair.
STYLE LOOKBOOK
Log every style you wear. Knotless braids, twist outs, wash and go, faux locs, bantu knots, mini twists. Save install and takedown dates, photos and notes. Learn which styles your hair keeps and which it does not.
DAILY HABITS AND STREAKS
Moisturize, silk bonnet, scalp care, water. Small things, tracked daily, are what actually grow Type 3 and Type 4 hair.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Blur faces in your progress photos with one tap. We do not sell your data.

I love this app. It’s been soo nice to have. Keeping track of all my hair habits and what it needs and learning new methods to help has been a struggle but this app helping me with all of it has lightened the load cuz 4c hair is a challenge to begin with (for me at least lol) but cooperating with it and learning it brings so much more kindness and grace. I saw an ad for this on instagram and got it immediately cuz an app that’s for ME ..and not clickbait ?! Almost unheard of today. I’m a pretty forgetful person but the reminders I get and remembering all my little accomplishments are sweet and just pushes me to take care of my hair more. I’ve literally never done an app review in my entire life so that’s how you know the app is GOODT! I truly have nothing bad to say about this app, I just hope it sticks around!
Still a ways to go

Best laser of this app is the community portion that lets you talk to other Natural girlies in a cool club kind of way. The rest needs a lot of work. I don’t like how the wash day portion is set up. I can add a step during but can’t remove a step? I have to do an in the moment wash day but can’t just log that I had a wash day and manually input how long it took? And the scanning portion was frustrating because of the 11 products I scanned only 3 were in the system so I was manually inputting the product names myself. However I appreciate that Shea will still tell you if the ingredients in the product are good for your goals. Also I think my goals should be front and center not just how long I want my hair to be. Not everyone has long hair goals some of us just want fuller hair, or more moisturized hair, or less split ends. Those things also require daily habits. It would be better if the daily habits corresponded to a specific goal you have. It’s an okay app. I love supporting black women but $50 seems like a step price for an app that feels like it’s still in beta. I can do most of the features with a notebook. Essentially you’re just paying for a natural hair Reddit and an ingredients database. Sorry if that’s too harsh
Developer Response
Thank you for your review. 1st: You can add a step during your wash day, and you can also skip/delete/remove a step if you don't want to do it.2nd: You can log a past wash day. The time it took isn't currently captured, that's true (we're working on it), but you can definitely log a wash day that already happened.3rd: There are tens of thousands of products out there (and so many different formulations of the same product). Unfortunately, there isn't a single database that has all of them, especially the brands most commonly used by us Black women. That makes it extremely difficult to build our own database from scratch. So far, we have 5,000 products in our database that we have MANUALLY added ourselves. So, sorry if we don't have a huge catalog yet, but we're literally building it ourselves and not outsourcing our data to AI like other hair apps that heavily use AI to build your routines, wash days, etc (LuxeRoot, Type4Hair Growth etc..) (And yes, Reddit is also sharing your data with OpenAI.) But, to counter these limitations, we offer 3 other ways to read the label of your hair products. Either by scanning the label, pasting the ingredients, or typing the ingredients directly. 4th: You can customize your daily habits by adding your own goals and steps, and name them however you want, with the flexibility you want. Most apps out there charge an annual subscription, most of them over $50/year. We decided to go with a one-time fee, with no subscription ever.Btw, Calm charges $500 for their lifetime plan, and Opal charges $400 for their lifetime plan. We only charge $39 if you take the welcome offer, and $49 if you don't.And we're not just charging once and leaving it there. Since the app was released 4 months ago, we've been updating it almost every 2 weeks with new features that our members actually ask us to add.We just launched V5, which includes a learning section, a feature to track your kids' hair growth, the ability to plan your wash days months in advance, and an inspiration board inspired by our own community members. So comparing all of that to a notebook and reducing the app to "just a natural hair Reddit and an ingredient database" is honestly pretty crazy. You could say the same thing about Flo or Notion: "I could just use a notebook for that." But you wouldn't, because the value isn't just in the individual features. It's in having everything organized, connected, and built specifically for the person using it.You can absolutely have your opinion about the app, but reducing everything we've built to just a Reddit community + ingredient database is pretty diminishing.Like another reviewer said : This app is what you make it, the more you put into it the more you get out of it.Thank you for your review, we'll continue to improve the app and make sure it become more than a notebook.
Loving this app!

I’m still new to the app but there is nothing better than an app for black women that sets up hair care routines for us and sends us reminders on how to improve our hair length and retention among other things. This is amazing! Not sure if there is an option to before and after pictures but I think that’s needed next.

I could say so much but I want to keep it short. This app provides community, accountability, and actual help. On top of that you are able to see how consistent and track how said advice helps with your hair goals. I want everyone with natural hair to be on here!
Fixes and improvements across Shea, including things you told us about. Thank you for the feedback. It makes the app better for everyone, so keep it coming.
