Grade with curves, an HSL mixer and your own .cube LUTs, then keep it as a named kit or run it over a folder. Photos pastes edits across a selection; it does neither. A color grading canvas for the Mac: tone curves, an 8-band HSL mixer, 9-range selective color and your own .cube LUTs — plus a way to use the grade you just built more than once. What it is not, since the name points that way: it does not upscale, restore or sharpen. There is no super-resolution and nothing AI-generated. If a blurry or low-resolution image is what you need fixed, this is the wrong app. THE GRADE Exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, temperature and tint, clarity, grain and noise reduction — plus the depth one-slider tools stop short of: • Four tone curves — a master RGB curve and separate red, green and blue • An 8-band HSL mixer: red, orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, purple, magenta, each with its own hue, saturation and luminance • 9-range selective color, one color family at a time • Six built-in Looks, one of them the neutral default, and your own .cube LUTs to go further THEN USE IT AGAIN Apple Photos can copy one photo's adjustments and paste them across a whole selection, so repeating an edit inside your library is already solved and free. What it has no answer for: • Import a .cube LUT of your own — 3D cubes up to 64 points; 1D LUTs are not read • Keep a grade as a named Style Kit and reapply it months later, in a different composition • Point the grade at a folder on disk and write a graded JPEG beside each original (that folder only — subfolders are not visited) • Paste one look onto every image layer inside a single composition at once BLEND THE SUBJECT BACK IN Subject segmentation runs on your Mac, on device: it finds the subject in the photo so you can blend a copy of it back over the original at any of 34 blend modes. No network step, no model download. This is where the app is at its strongest — compositing and blending, not enhancement. It is not a cutout tool: the subject stays inside the picture, and export is JPEG, so nothing leaves here with a transparent background. BUILD ON TOP OF IT Image, text and shape layers on one canvas, six layout templates and six shape primitives. Crop with five aspect presets, correct perspective, and export a watermarked proof when work has to go out for review. Save the composition as a self-contained .biqb project with the image data embedded, and reopen it later with the layers intact. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO • Export is JPEG, at full resolution. There is no format picker and no quality setting. • Rotation is 90-degree quarter turns. There is no free-angle straighten. • A saved grade is a Style Kit you apply to a layer. There is no Presets panel with a Save button. • There is no before-and-after slider on the canvas. • Snapshots taken while working last for the session only; a saved project does not carry them. • A folder run applies one grade to every file in that folder. ABOUT APPLE PHOTOS It is free, already on your Mac, and already holds your library. Its adjustments are genuinely good — curves, selective color, definition, noise reduction — and every edit stays revertible forever. Photos also has Retouch, which lifts a blemish or a stray object straight out of a picture; there is nothing like it here, and no brush, clone, heal or dodge-and-burn tool either. This is a grader and a compositor, not a pixel painter. For one photo, or for a batch that needs the same correction inside your library, use Photos and keep your money. Photos also has no layers. Markup gives you Sketch, Draw, Shapes, Text and Signature over a photo — real tools, not just text — but there is no second image layer, no blend mode between two images, no template canvas, and nothing you can save as a project file of your own. Photos keeps your edits forever, but only inside Photos; a .biqb file is a document you can move and back up yourself — though only this app can open one. It runs with the network off — the app ships without a network entitlement at all. No account, no sign-in, no upload. Your originals are never overwritten. No subscription. macOS 14 or later.
