Help map Cornwall’s small mammals. Record what your cat brings home, explore local sightings and discover species with expert-reviewed guides.
What the Cat Dragged In is a citizen-science project from Cornwall Mammal Group.
Cats encounter small mammals that we rarely see. By recording what your cat brings home, you can help us build a better picture of the mammals living across Cornwall, where different species occur and how their distributions may be changing.
Record a find by adding up to three clear photographs, recording where and when the animal was found, telling us its condition and having a go at identifying the species.
Browse illustrated species guides covering many of Cornwall’s small mammals, including mice, voles and shrews. Submitted records can be reviewed by Cornwall Mammal Group experts.
Keep track of your own submissions and see when an expert has verified them. Correct identifications earn a Gold Star.
Explore records contributed by other participants on the sightings map. Other users see only an approximate location rather than your exact submitted position.
Submitted records can be used for wildlife recording, conservation, distribution mapping and scientific research. Verified observations may also contribute to recognised biodiversity recording schemes and datasets.
Ratings & Reviews

New in version 1.1.0:
A new first-use onboarding guide explaining how the project works and how your records contribute to mammal conservation and research.
A refreshed home screen with species imagery.
Optional cat names can now be added to records. If no name is entered, the sighting is shown as being brought in by “Tiddles”.
Sightings on the map can now be tapped to view more information, including species, date, condition and verification status.
Other users’ submitted photographs remain private; map records use species imagery instead.
The manual map picker now opens around your current location where permission is available, rather than starting in London.
Improved species guides with illustrated browsing and clearer species profile pages.
Improvements to notifications, privacy information and general app reliability.
